1. Reason for the Job
This task provides information for adjustment of the LH or RH Thrust Reverser "J" ring in order to make sure the "J" ring is fully seated in the outer flange V-groove.
NOTE: The "J" ring does not have to be adjusted if the LH or RH thrust reverser is installed to the same engine and same engine position.
NOTE: The "J" ring must be adjusted on the LH or RH thrust reverser if:
  • You install a new engine, or
  • You install an engine from another position, or
  • You install a new LH or RH thrust reverser.

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

   (1) Open the fan cowl doors: (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-040)

4. Procedure
Subtask 78-36-42-820-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Adjustment of the "J" Ring
   (1) Loosen all bolts attaching the "J" Ring to support forward frame flange.

   (2) Open reverser half to install 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) thick shims.
F "J" Ring Adjustment ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (3) Install 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) thick shims between centering pins and bushings.
F Thrust Reverser Adjusting ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (4) Push thrust reverser half firmly to close and lock all four latches.
NOTE: If necessary remove the screws and locking bracket, and loosen stirrup nuts.
   (5) Check that there is no gap at shim locations.
   (6) Use a wooden mallet and, starting at the 3 or 9 o'clock position, tap "J" Ring at 4 in. (101.60 mm) intervals (every six bolts), working alternately from center position toward the extremities of "J" Ring segment. Torque bolts at the same time at mallet impact points to between 70 and 60 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.68 m.daN ) T. Repeat same operation for other reverser half if it was replaced.

   (7) Open reverser half to remove the 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) thick shims.
   (8) Remove the 0.02 in. (0.5 mm) thick shims between centering pins and bushings.
   (9) TORQUE remaining bolts to between 70 and 60 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.68 m.daN ) T.
