A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

C. Deactivate the thrust reverser.
Subtask 70-11-50-010-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) IS DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND THE THRUST REVERSER. IF THE HCU IS NOT DEACTIVATED, THERE IS A RISK OF UNWANTED THRUST REVERSER OPERATION WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(1) Deactivate the thrust reverser hydraulic control unit (HCU) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-012). D. Open the thrust reverser halves (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-010-010):

A. Install covers on all the openings of the engine.
(1) The openings include:
(a) The inlet
(b) The exhaust
(c) All the bleeds
(d) The open fuel lines and oil lines
(e) The breather tubes
(f) The open electrical connectors.

B. Remove the grease from the engine external surfaces.
(1) Use one of the subsequent procedures to apply the cleaner:
(a) Alkali cleaner solution procedure
1 Mix one of the alkali cleaners in the subsequent list with water at the specified concentration, then use a spray, steam or foam to apply the solution on the external surfaces of the engine:

(b) Alkaline gel cleaner procedure
1 Apply one of the alkaline gels in the subsequent list. Refer to the alkaline gel manufacturer’s instructions for the correct applicator to use, to apply the alkaline gel:

(2) Let the cleaner stay on the engine for between 10 and 20 minutes.

NOTE: It is necessary to use a special applicator to apply the alkaline gel cleaners. Information about the correct applicator is in the alkaline gel manufacturer’s instructions.
NOTE: It is not approved to use a steam cleaner to apply the alkaline gel cleaners.

(2) Let the cleaner stay on the engine for between 10 and 20 minutes.
CAUTION:
REMOVE THE ALKALI CLEANER COMPLETELY. IF NOT COMPLETELY REMOVED, DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO THE INLET AND THRUST REVERSER ACOUSTIC SURFACES.
CAUTION:
INSURE THE DEBRIS IS CLEAR FROM THE NACELLE DRAIN HOLES.
(3) Flush the engine fully with warm or hot water. C. Remove all of the covers from the openings on the engine.

(1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(2) Close the thrust reverser halves (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-410-010):
