A. Special Detailed Inspection
(1) Do a Thermographic Inspection of the elevator top and bottom skin panels NTM 552007.
(3) Do a check of the following signs to find previous existing repairs:
(a) Thermographic indications with a regular shape and color.
(b) Visual indications that the outer surface of the elevator panel is not homogeneous.
(4) If previous steps do not confirm approved existing repairs, remove locally the external surface protection at affected area looking for repair plies SRM 517511, paragraph 3.
(a) If the Thermographic Inspection and the Tap-test confirm the liquid ingress damage, refer to the SRM 552111 for:
(b) No more than three holes must be drilled to confirm the trapped water indication. They must be drilled in the darker area of the thermographic indication and inspected one by one.
(d) Repair actions:
a And you are going to apply the ADL for liquid ingress ( SRM 552111), do one of the following procedures:
Procedure 1:
Procedure 2:
a Do a damage evaluation SRM 552111.
b Perform a non-structural repair for damage less than 1000 mm2 (1.55 in.2) SRM 552111.
5. Close-up(1) Do a Thermographic Inspection of the elevator top and bottom skin panels NTM 552007.
NOTE: The elevator is removed. The applicable inspections are the NTM 552007 Thermographic Inspection Method A (Oven), Method B (Blankets) or Method C (Refrigerator).
NOTE: Classify the indications as regular or not regular in shape and grey color.
NOTE: All dark indications which cannot be identified as geometric changes such as ribs, hoisting points, fasteners, core splice, honeycomb filler, etc., surface irregularities, foreign materials or heat/cold source reflections on the surface must be considered to be liquid indications.
(2) Do a Tap-Test Inspection of the elevator top and bottom skin panels on and around the liquid indications NTM 511003.
NOTE: Sometimes, an aerodynamic smoother is applied over the repaired area. If this occurs, remove the aerodynamic smoother by same method as removal of external surface protection.
(5) Results: (a) If the Thermographic Inspection and the Tap-test confirm the liquid ingress damage, refer to the SRM 552111 for:
- Damage Evaluation,
- Total Damage Area Calculation,
- Definition of Repair Zones,
- Allowable Damage Limits
and - Applicable Repair.
NOTE: This procedure is only applicable to the sandwich structure of the elevator skin panels where thermographic inspection according to NTM 552007 is done.
1 The indication is confirmed as an existing repair without liquid ingress damage, if: - The indication is regular in both, geometrical shape and grey color, and
- Visual inspection of panel surface plus removal of the local external surface, if necessary, confirms an existing repair, and
- The tap-test gives a clear ringing sound (not dull, not damped) (filler/resin confirmed at affected area) or no difference is noticed during Tap-Test Inspection between affected area and adjacent area.
- If previous steps confirm the existing repair without liquid ingress damage, a re-protection surface is required SRM 517512.
- The indication is regular in geometrical shape but not in grey color, and
- Visual inspection of panel surface plus removal of the local external surface, if necessary, confirms an existing repair.
- The results of the tap-test are not important for indication evaluation.
- If previous steps confirm the existing repair with liquid ingress damage or a non-homogeneous repair, contact Airbus for instructions.
NOTE: The image of relevant thermographic indication must be reported to Airbus for assessment.
3 The indication is confirmed as a potted area (area which has been repaired with resin) of the panel, if: - The indication is irregular in shape, in grey color or in both, and
- Visual inspection of panel surface plus removal of the local external surface, if necessary, does not confirm an existing repair, and
- The tap-test shows a clear ringing sound (not dull, not damped) (filler/resin confirmed at affected area).
- If previous steps confirm the potted area of the panel, a re-protection surface is required SRM 517512.
- The indication is irregular in shape, and
- Visual inspection of panel surface plus removal of the local external surface, if necessary, does not confirm an existing repair, and
- Results of the tap-test are not conclusive for indication.
NOTE: This procedure for liquid ingress confirmation is a destructive method and it should be applied only if it is strictly necessary.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE DEPTH OF THE HOLE IS NOT MORE THAN 2 MM (0.0787 IN.). MAKE SURE THAT YOU DRILL ONLY THE OUTER SKIN, AND BE CAREFUL IN THE CHAMFER AREAS.
(6) Damage assessment by witness hole procedure: NOTE: This procedure for liquid ingress confirmation is a destructive method. It is recommended to do only when you are not sure of the liquid ingress.
(a) Make a hole of 2 mm (0.0787 in.) of diameter SRM 514421, paragraph 3. Only outer sandwich skin must be drilled. (b) No more than three holes must be drilled to confirm the trapped water indication. They must be drilled in the darker area of the thermographic indication and inspected one by one.
NOTE: The holes have to keep a minimum distance from 8 mm (0.3150 in.) to 12 mm (0.4724 in.) between the hole centers.
NOTE: The total damaged area due to hole drilling must not be more than 1000 mm2 (1.55 in.2) described in SRM 552111.
(c) Use a dry SYRINGE to blow air through the holes to find liquid ingress. (d) Repair actions:
NOTE: Allowable Damage Limits (ADL) for liquid ingress is established in such a way that damage within this limit must be permanently repaired within the defined operating limit (refer to the SRM 552111).
1 If the drilled holes are located in an area with liquid ingress: a And you are going to apply the ADL for liquid ingress ( SRM 552111), do one of the following procedures:
Procedure 1:
- Do a damage evaluation SRM 552111. Liquid ingress area must not be included for the total damaged area.
- Do a repair SRM 517712 Paragraph 2A.
Procedure 2:
- Do a damage evaluation SRM 552111. Liquid ingress area must not be included for the total damaged area.
- Perform a non-structural repair for damage less than 1000 mm2 (1.55 in.2) SRM 552111.
- Do a damage evaluation SRM 552111 including holes for the total damaged area.
- Do a repair SRM 552111.
a Do a damage evaluation SRM 552111.
b Perform a non-structural repair for damage less than 1000 mm2 (1.55 in.2) SRM 552111.
