Removal of the V-Retainer Couplings and Seals at the Starter Air Duct


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: IF IT IS NECESSARY TO ENERGIZE THE AIRCRAFT FOR MAINTENANCE WORK WHILE YOU DO THIS MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE, MAKE SURE THAT ONLY EXTERNAL POWER IS USED. THE USE OF APU OR ENGINE POWER CAN CAUSE PRESSURIZED AIR LEAKAGE IN THE PNEUMATIC SYSTEM AND INJURY CAN OCCUR.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 80-12-49-941-050-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).
   (3) On the overhead control and indicator panel 25VU, on the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) section:
     (a) Make sure that the APU MASTER SW pushbutton is released.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the APU.

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

     (b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) on the left side of the engine.
4. Procedure
Subtask 80-12-49-020-050-A
A. Removal of the V-Retainer Coupling and Seal between the Starter Air Duct and the Pylon
   (1) Open and remove the V-retainer coupling (4) that attaches the starter air duct (3) to the pylon duct elbow (1).
   (2) Loosen the starter air duct (3) as follows:
     (a) Loosen the two bolts (12) that attach the starter air duct (3) to the support bracket (11).
     (b) Loosen the two bolts (17) that attach the starter air duct (3) to the support bracket (16).
     (c) At two locations, loosen the two bolts (6) that attach the clamp (5) and the clamp saddle (7) to the support bracket (8).
   (3) Pull the starter air duct (3) away from the pylon duct elbow (1). If there is not sufficient play to remove the seal (2), you can remove the loosened bolts.
   (4) Remove and discard the seal (2) from the flange of the pylon duct elbow (1).
   (5) Install all the COVER - PROTECTION and the CAP - PROTECTION on the openings, tubes, hoses and connectors.

B. Removal of the V-Retainer Coupling and Seal between the Starter Air Duct and the Starter Air Valve.
   (1) Open and remove the V-retainer coupling (13) that attaches the starter air duct (3) to the starter air valve (14).
   (2) Loosen the starter air duct (3) as follows:
     (a) Remove the two bolts (17) that attach the starter air duct (3) to the support bracket (16).
     (b) Loosen the two bolts (12) that attach the starter air duct (3) to the support bracket (11).
     (c) At two locations, loosen the two bolts (6) that attach the clamp (5) and the clamp saddle (7) to the support bracket (8).
   (3) Pull the starter air duct (3) away from the starter air valve (14). If there is not sufficient play to remove the seal (15), you can remove the loosened bolts.
   (4) Remove and discard the seal (15) from flange of the starter air valve (14).
   (5) Install all the COVER - PROTECTION and the CAP - PROTECTION on the openings, tubes, hoses and connectors.
