A. Removal of the Pneumatic Starter.
(2) Remove starter (60) from accessory gearbox as follows:
(a) Remove V-clamp (10) that attaches pneumatic starter to the AGB.
(b) Remove the starter from AGB by pulling it out from the gearbox.
(3) Remove and discard O-ring (50) from starter output drive shaft.
PRE SB CFM56-5 72-454
(4) Remove seal ring assembly (40) from the AGB housing, and keep it if not damaged.
POST SB CFM56-5 72-454
(5) Remove seal ring assembly (40) from the AGB housing.
(a) Remove the preformed packing (30) from the support (20).

(7) Install PLUG - BLANKING on all openings.
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU MOVE THE ENGINE STARTER. BECAUSE THE STARTER WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 38 POUNDS (17 KG), INJURY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION:
DURING THE REMOVAL, KEEP THE STARTER PERPENDICULAR TO ITS AGB MOUTING PAD. IF YOU DO NOT, THE SEAL RING CAN SNAP OUT AND CAUSE THE SUDDEN DISENGAGEMENT OF THE STARTER BECAUSE OF ITS WEIGHT, AND THUS CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVE SHAFT.
NEVER LET THE DRIVE SHAFT SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE STARTER.
CAUTION:
DURING STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION, BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE STARTER FUSE PIN WHEN YOU TURN/TWIST THE STARTER ASSEMBLY IN OPPOSITE CLOCKWISE/COUNTERCLOCKWISE DIRECTIONS FROM THE MOUNTING PAD. CFM RECOMMENDS THAT YOU USE THE CORRECT LEVERAGE PROCEDURES AND CORRECT TOOLS TO REMOVE/INSTALL THE STARTER ASSEMBLY FROM/ON THE AGB.
