Removal of the Thrust Reverser Opening Tubes and Manifold


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: DO NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN FOR A LONG TIME. FLUSH THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WITH WATER. THE OIL IS POISONOUS AND CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET ENGINE FUEL OR OIL FALL ON THE ENGINE. UNWANTED FUEL OR OIL MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY WITH A CLEAN LINT FREE CLOTH. THE FUEL OR OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE PROTECTION AND TO SOME PARTS.

1. Reason for the Job
This task supplies the information to remove the thrust reverser opening actuator tubes and manifold. The procedure in this task is the same for both the left and the right thrust reverser halves.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 78-36-49-941-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-010):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)
437AL 438AR.
     (b) FOR [1000EM2] (ENGINE-2)

C. Deactivate of the Thrust Reverser
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) IS DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND THE THRUST REVERSER. IF THE HCU IS NOT DEACTIVATED, THERE IS A RISK OF UNWANTED THRUST REVERSER OPERATION WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
   (1) Deactivate the thrust reverser Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-012).

D. Open the thrust reverser halves (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-010-010):
   (1) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)
451AL 452AR.
   (2) FOR [1000EM2] (ENGINE-2)
461AL 462AR.

E. Put the CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) in to position to catch the oil that may be drained when the tubes are disconnected.
4. Procedure

A. Remove the manifold (3)
   (1) Disconnect the tube nut (6) from the manifold (3).
   (2) Remove the lower hydraulic tube (7) from the manifold (3).
   (3) Remove the two bolts (1) and the two washers (2).
   (4) Remove the manifold (3) from the bracket (8).
   (5) Remove the union (5) and the packing (4) from the manifold (3).
   (6) Discard the packing (4).

B. Disassemble the electrical harness from the lower hydraulic tube
SBN 78-0021
SBN 78-0021: Rework of the thrust reverser wiring harness installation.
   (1) Remove the nut (51), washer (49), screw (50) and clamps (48) which attach the electrical harness to the lower hydraulic tube (7) near the non-locking actuator.

C. Remove the lower hydraulic tube (7)
   (1) Remove the screws (12), washers (11) and clamps (10) that attach the lower hydraulic tube (7) to the two brackets (9) between the manifold (3) and the non-locking actuator.
   (2) Remove the nuts (17), washers (16), spacers (14), screws (15) and clamps (13) that attach the lower hydraulic tube (7) and the electrical harness to the brackets.
   (3) Replace the screws (15), washer (16), spacers (14) and nuts (17) to support the electrical harness.
   (4) Remove the screw (21), washer (22) and clamp (24) that attach the lower hydraulic tube (7) to the bracket (23) above the non locking actuator.
   (5) Disconnect the tube nut (20) from the feed through union.
   (6) Remove the lower hydraulic tube (7).

D. Remove the upper hydraulic tube (18).
   (1) Disconnect the tube nut (19) from the union (Detail E).
   (2) Disconnect the tube nut (19) at the other end of the upper hydraulic tube (18) from the elbow (30) (Detail G).
   (3) Remove the screws (21), washers (22), nuts (17) and clamps (24) that attach the upper hydraulic tube (18) to the brackets (25) and the C-duct (Detail F).
   (4) Remove the upper hydraulic tube (18).

E. Removal of the Hydraulic Hose
   (1) Remove the screw (26) that attaches the lower end cover (28) to the C-duct.
   (2) Raise the end cover (28) on its flex-hinge and disconnect the hose nut (29) from the elbow (30).
   (3) Remove the screw (33), washer (35), nut (36) and clamp (34) that attach the hose cover elbow (38) to the pre-cooler port (37).
   (4) Remove the nut (55), washer (54) and clamp (53) that attach the flexible hose cover (42) to the upper bumper.
   (5) Remove the screws (40), washers (39) and clamp (41) that attach the flexible hose cover (42) to the C-duct near the pre-cooler.
   (6) Remove the nut (45), washer (46), screw (48) and clamp (47) that attach the end cover (44) to the opening actuator (32).
   (7) Separate the halves of the end cover (44) on its flex-hinge and disconnect the hose nut (43) from the opening actuator (32).
   (8) Remove the hydraulic hose (31) with the flexible hose cover (42).

F. Install COVER - BLANKING to all exposed openings.

G. Remove the container and discard the drained oil.
