Removal of the VSV System Control Rods
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

This task gives the data for the removal of the VSV system control rods.

Subtask 75-32-42-941-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
Subtask 75-32-42-010-069-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:

C. Deactivate the thrust reverser.
(2) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG FADEC GND PWR pushbutton switch is off.
Subtask 75-32-42-010-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL WARNING:
MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) IS DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND THE THRUST REVERSER. IF THE HCU IS NOT DEACTIVATED, THERE IS A RISK OF UNWANTED THRUST REVERSER OPERATION WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
(1) Deactivate the thrust reverser hydraulic control unit (HCU) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-012). (2) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG FADEC GND PWR pushbutton switch is off.
D. Open the thrust reverser halves (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-010-010):

A. Find the control rod that is to be removed.
Subtask 75-32-42-820-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL B. Install the rig pins.
(2) Install the IAE1R18254 PIN RIGGING, through the rig pin hole in the front bearing housing and the crankshaft.
(3) If the control rod between the VSV actuator and the crankshaft is to be removed:
(a) Install the IAE1R18891 PIN, RIGGING, in to the actuator ram.
(4) If a control rod between the crankshaft and a unison ring is to be removed:
(a) Install the IAE1R18423 PIN, RIGGING, in the rig pin bracket on the applicable unison ring.
(b) Make sure that the rig pin engages with the hole in the compressor case.
Subtask 75-32-42-020-054-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL CAUTION:
YOU MUST INSTALL THE RIG PINS BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT A CONTROL ROD.
IF THE RIG PINS ARE NOT INSTALLED THE VARIABLE STATOR VANES CAN BE DAMAGED.
(1) Use an applicable wrench on the flats of the crankshaft and move the VSV system to the high speed position (ram retracted). (2) Install the IAE1R18254 PIN RIGGING, through the rig pin hole in the front bearing housing and the crankshaft.
(3) If the control rod between the VSV actuator and the crankshaft is to be removed:
(a) Install the IAE1R18891 PIN, RIGGING, in to the actuator ram.
(4) If a control rod between the crankshaft and a unison ring is to be removed:
(a) Install the IAE1R18423 PIN, RIGGING, in the rig pin bracket on the applicable unison ring.
(b) Make sure that the rig pin engages with the hole in the compressor case.
C. Remove the control rod

SBE 72-0406
SBE 72-0406: Actuating mechanism HPC variable vanes - introduction of a fully machined from bar crankshaft assembly.
(1) For the actuator control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (39), the washer (40) and the bolt (38) that attach the control rod to the actuator ram.
(b) Remove the nut (35), the washer (36) and the bolt (37) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(2) For the VIGV control rod:
(a) Remove the cotter pin (42), the nut (41) and the spacer (43) that attach the control rod to the VIGV unison ring.
(b) Pre SB 72-0366 and SBE 72-0406: Remove the cotter pin (45), the nut (46) and the bolt (44) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft. Refer to the view at F.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (3) and the bolt (4) that attach the control rod to the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (9), the nut (10), the washer (8), the spacers (7) and (6) and the bolt (5) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(4) For the stage 4 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (1) and the bolt (2) that attach the control rod to the stage 4 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (16), the nut (15), the washer (14), the spacers (13) and (12) and the bolt (11) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(5) For the stage 5 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (48) and the bolt (47) that attach the control rod to the stage 5 unison ring.
(b) Pre SBE 72-0366: Remove the cotter pin (51), the nut (32), the washer (33), the spacers (50) and (34) and the bolt (49) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) SBE 72-0406: Remove the bolt (52), the washer (53) and the retaining pin ( 54) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft. Refer to the view at J.
(d) Remove the control rod.

SBE 72-0406: Actuating mechanism HPC variable vanes - introduction of a fully machined from bar crankshaft assembly.
(1) For the actuator control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (39), the washer (40) and the bolt (38) that attach the control rod to the actuator ram.
(b) Remove the nut (35), the washer (36) and the bolt (37) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(2) For the VIGV control rod:
(a) Remove the cotter pin (42), the nut (41) and the spacer (43) that attach the control rod to the VIGV unison ring.
(b) Pre SB 72-0366 and SBE 72-0406: Remove the cotter pin (45), the nut (46) and the bolt (44) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft. Refer to the view at F.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (3) and the bolt (4) that attach the control rod to the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (9), the nut (10), the washer (8), the spacers (7) and (6) and the bolt (5) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(4) For the stage 4 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (1) and the bolt (2) that attach the control rod to the stage 4 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (16), the nut (15), the washer (14), the spacers (13) and (12) and the bolt (11) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(5) For the stage 5 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (48) and the bolt (47) that attach the control rod to the stage 5 unison ring.
(b) Pre SBE 72-0366: Remove the cotter pin (51), the nut (32), the washer (33), the spacers (50) and (34) and the bolt (49) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) SBE 72-0406: Remove the bolt (52), the washer (53) and the retaining pin ( 54) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft. Refer to the view at J.
(d) Remove the control rod.
D. Remove the control rod
SBE 72-0366
SBE 72-0366 : Actuating mechanism HPC variable vanes - introduction of a revised crankshaft assembly
(1) For the actuator control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (39), the washer (40) and the bolt (38) that attach the control rod to the actuator ram.
(b) Remove the nut (35), the washer (36) and the bolt (37) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(2) For the VIGV control rod:
(a) Remove the cotter pin (42), the nut (41) and the spacer (43) that attach the control rod to the VIGV unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (60), the nut (59), the washer (58) , the spacers (56 and 57) and the bolt (55) that attach the control rod to the cranksshaft. Refer to the view at F.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (3) and the bolt (4) that attach the control rod to the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (9), the nut (10), the washer (8), the spacers (7) and (6) and the bolt (5) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(4) For the stage 4 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (1) and the bolt (2) that attach the control rod to the stage 4 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (16), the nut (15), the washer (14), the spacers (13) and (12) and the bolt (11) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(5) For the stage 5 control rod:

SBE 72-0366 : Actuating mechanism HPC variable vanes - introduction of a revised crankshaft assembly
(1) For the actuator control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (39), the washer (40) and the bolt (38) that attach the control rod to the actuator ram.
(b) Remove the nut (35), the washer (36) and the bolt (37) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(2) For the VIGV control rod:
(a) Remove the cotter pin (42), the nut (41) and the spacer (43) that attach the control rod to the VIGV unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (60), the nut (59), the washer (58) , the spacers (56 and 57) and the bolt (55) that attach the control rod to the cranksshaft. Refer to the view at F.
(c) Remove the control rod.
(3) For the stage 3 control rod:
(a) Remove the nut (3) and the bolt (4) that attach the control rod to the stage 3 unison ring.
(b) Remove the cotter pin (9), the nut (10), the washer (8), the spacers (7) and (6) and the bolt (5) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
(c) Remove the control rod.
