Removal of the VSV System Control Rods


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
1. Reason for the Job
This task is for A5 engines only, which have SBE 72-0564 incorporated.
This task gives the data for the removal of the VSV system control rods.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 75-32-42-941-071-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) In the maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-010):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (HCU) IS DEACTIVATED BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND THE THRUST REVERSER. IF THE HCU IS NOT DEACTIVATED, THERE IS A RISK OF UNWANTED THRUST REVERSER OPERATION WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser hydraulic control unit (HCU) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-012).

D. Get Access
   (1) Open the thrust reverser halves (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-00-010-010):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

4. Procedure

A. Find the control rod that is to be removed.

B. Install the Rig Pins
F VSV System Rig-Pin Positions ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
CAUTION: YOU MUST INSTALL THE RIG PINS BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT A CONTROL ROD. IF THE RIG PINS ARE NOT INSTALLED THE VARIABLE STATOR VANES CAN BE DAMAGED.
   (1) Use an applicable wrench on the flats of the crankshaft and move the VSV system to the high-speed position (ram retracted).
   (2) Install the IAE1R18254 PIN RIGGING, through the rig pin hole in the front bearing housing and the crankshaft.
   (3) If the control rod between the VSV actuator and the crankshaft is to be removed:
     (a) Install the IAE1R18891 PIN, RIGGING, into the actuator ram.
   (4) If a control rod between the crankshaft and an unison ring is to be removed:
     (a) Install the IAE1R18423 PIN, RIGGING, in the rig pin bracket on the applicable unison ring.
     (b) Make sure that the rig pin engages with the hole in the compressor case.

C. Remove the Control Rod

F VSV System Control Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) For the actuator control rod:
     (a) Remove the nut (39), the washer (40) and the bolt (38) that attach the control rod to the actuator ram.
     (b) Remove the nut (35), the washer (36) and the bolt (37) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
     (c) Remove the control rod.
   (2) For the VIGV control rod:
F VSV System Control Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Remove the cotter pin (48), the nut (47), the bolt (44) and the two washers (45) and (46) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
     (b) Move the VIGV ring forward into "maximum closed" position.
     (c) Remove the nut (41), the bush (42) and the bolt (43).
     (d) Remove the VIGV rod.
     (e) Remove the bolt (8), the nut (5) and the two washers (6) and (7) from the stage 3 control rod that attach the control rod to the stage 3 unison ring.
     (f) Move the stage 3 unison ring rearward into "maximum open" position.
     (g) Remove the cotter pin, the nut and the spacer that attach the control rod to the VIGV unison ring.
   (3) For the stage 3 control rod:

     (a) Remove the cotter pin (14), the nut (13), the washer (12), the spacers (11) and (10) and the bolt (9) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
     (b) Remove the control rod.
   (4) For the stage 4 control rod:
F VSV System Control Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Remove the nut (1), the bolt (4) and the two spacers (2) and (3) that attach the control rod to the stage 4 unison ring.
     (b) Remove the cotter pin (20), the nut (19), the washer (18), the spacers (17) and (16) and the bolt (15) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
     (c) Remove the control rod.
   (5) For the stage 5 control rod:
F VSV System Control Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
     (a) Remove the nut (52), the bolt (49) and the two spacers (51) and (50) that attach the control rod to the stage 5 unison ring.
     (b) Remove the bolt (55), the washer (54) and the retaining pin (53) that attach the control rod to the crankshaft.
     (c) Remove the control rod.
