Removal of the Starter Drive Seal Assembly and Mating Ring


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: DO NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN FOR A LONG TIME. FLUSH THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WITH WATER. THE OIL IS POISONOUS AND CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 72-60-22-941-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

B. Open the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-010):
   (1) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)
437AL 438AR.
   (2) FOR [1000EM2] (ENGINE-2)
447AL 448AR.
4. Procedure
Subtask 72-60-22-020-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Removal of the Starter Drive Seal Assembly and Mating Ring
   (1) Remove the starter (Ref. AMM TASK 80-13-41-000-010).
   (2) Remove the adaptor housing:
     (a) Remove the six nuts (6) which attach the adaptor housing (3) to the starter drive housing (4).
     (b) Remove the adaptor housing (3) from the starter drive housing (4).
   (3) Remove the seal assembly:
     (a) Remove the three bolts (10) and the three washers (9) which attach seal assembly to the starter drive housing (4).
     (b) Install the IAE1F10008 PULLER-REMOVAL, on to the seal assembly.
     (c) Use the IAE1F10008 PULLER-REMOVAL, to remove the seal assembly.
     (d) Remove and discard packing (2).
     (e) Remove the IAE1F10008 PULLER-REMOVAL, from the seal housing (1).
     (f) Discard the seal housing (1).
NOTE: It is important to replace mating ring when the seal assembly is replaced. Not replacing the mating ring when the seal assembly is replaced may result in an oil leak.
   (4) Remove the mating ring:
     (a) Install the IAE1F10007 PULLER-REMOVAL, on to the mating ring (7).
     (b) Use theIAE1F10007 PULLER-REMOVAL , to remove the mating ring (7) from the starter drive gear (5).
     (c) Remove and discard the packing (8).
     (d) Remove the IAE1F10007 PULLER-REMOVAL from the mating ring (7).
     (e) Discard the mating ring (7).

B. Install COVER - BLANKING to all exposed openings.
