WARNING: BE CAREFUL IF YOU OPEN OR CLOSE A FAN COWL DOOR WHEN THE WIND SPEED IS 25 MPH (40 KM/H) OR MORE. IF THE WIND MOVES THE FAN COWL DOOR, INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND ADJACENT COMPONENTS CAN OCCUR.

1. Reason for the Job
Use this procedure to close the fan cowl doors when one or more hold open rod is missing or does not operate correctly. The hold open rods will not be disengaged in this procedure.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 71-13-00-941-082-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Make sure that you did the procedure to prevent engine motoring
(Ref. AMM TASK 71-00-00-860-833).
   (2) Close the thrust reverser doors.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST REVERSER DOORS ARE CLOSED BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE FAN COWL DOORS. DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
     (a) Make sure that the thrust reverser doors are closed (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-410-802).
   (3) Make sure that the open fan cowl doors are attached to the fan cowl sling (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-805).
4. Procedure
WARNING: HAVE A PERSON HOLD OPEN THE FAN COWL DOOR TO MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT FALL. THE FAN COWL DOOR IS HEAVY. IF THE AFT HOLD-OPEN ROD FAILS AND THE DOOR FALLS, INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT LIFT THE FAN COWL DOOR MORE THAN 52 DEGREES FROM THE VERTICAL. DAMAGE TO THE FAN COWL DOOR OR PYLON CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE FORWARD HOLD OPEN ROD DOES NOT HANG LOOSE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS CAUTION, DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT LEAVE THIS JOB AFTER JUST CLOSING THE FAN COWLS, CONTINUE ON TO SECURE THE LATCHES. IF YOU ARE CALLED AWAY PRIOR TO LATCHING, THEN EITHER RE-OPEN ONE COWL DOOR OR LATCH THE LATCHES BEFORE WALKING AWAY FROM THIS ENGINE.
Subtask 71-13-00-410-093-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Closing of the Left Fan Cowl Door
   (1) Before you close the fan cowl doors, do a check of the latch handles:
CAUTION: DO NOT ENGAGE THE LATCH HANDLE HOOKS WHEN THE FAN COWL DOORS ARE OPEN.
     (a) Make sure that all the latch handle hooks are not engaged.
NOTE: The hooks can cause damage to the engine parts during the fan cowl door closure.
   (2) Slowly lower the left fan cowl door (1) with the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING until it is on the bottom.
     (a) Make sure that there is no tension on the straps of the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING.
   (3) Remove the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING from the left fan cowl door (1). Refer to the instructions of the manufacturer of the sling.
   (4) Apply a thin layer of the anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the threads of the six screws (12).
   (5) Install the six screws (12) in the three hoist inserts on the left fan cowl door (1).
   (6) TORQUE the six screws (12) to between 60.5 and 55 lbf.in (0.68 and 0.62 m.daN ) T.
Subtask 71-13-00-410-094-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Closing of the Right Fan Cowl Door
   (1) Slowly lower the right fan cowl door (11) with the
636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING until it is on the bottom.
     (a) Make sure that there is no tension on the straps of the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING.
   (2) Remove the 636-2000-17GSE FAN COWL HANDLING SLING from the right fan cowl door (11). Refer to the instructions of the manufacturer of the sling.
   (3) Apply a thin layer of the anti-seize compound (Material No.PU5-0005) or equivalent (Ref. AMM TASK 70-30-00-918-803) to the threads of the six screws (12).
   (4) Install the six screws (12) in the three hoist inserts on the right fan cowl door (11).
   (5) TORQUE the six screws (12) to between 60.5 and 55 lbf.in (0.68 and 0.62 m.daN ) T.

C. Closing of the Latches on the Fan Cowl Doors
CAUTION: WHEN YOU OPEN OR CLOSE THE FAN COWL DOOR, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PUSH THE DOOR FORWARD OR AFT. IF YOU DO THIS, THE DOOR CAN HIT COMPONENTS AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THEM OR PREVENT CORRECT ENGAGEMENT OF THE AXIAL LOCATORS.
   (1) Make sure that the Push Open Device (POD) is correctly aligned with the POD wear plate.
NOTE: If the fan cowl door falls, the POD can become caught under the inlet cowl POD wear plate. The door can then apparently be fully closed and latched when it is not safely latched. The function of the POD is to keep doors that are not latched partially open. Thus you can see that they need to be latched.
   (2) Push the right fan cowl door (11) until it is against the inlet cowl.
     (a) Make sure that the axial locators (9) and (10) on the right fan cowl door (11) engage the locator clips on the inlet cowl.
   (3) Push or pull the left fan cowl door (1) against the right fan cowl door (11).
     (a) Make sure that the alignment pins (6) go into the holes adjacent to the latches (2), (4) and (5).
     (b) Make sure that the axial locators (3) and (7) on the left fan cowl door (1) engage the locator clips on the inlet cowl.
NOTE: The POD on the outboard fan cowl door will try to push the doors open while you close them.
   (4) Close the latches as follows:
CAUTION: IF THE BAULK BRACKET ABOVE THE AFT LATCH (L3) IS NOT THERE OR IF ITS WEARSTRIP IS MISSING, DO NOT OPEN THE LATCH HOOK MORE THAN NECESSARY TO DISENGAGE OR ENGAGE THE KEEPER. DO NOT MOVE THE LATCH HOOK TOO MUCH IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LATCH HANDLE OR PUT THE LATCH HOOK AGAINST THE LATCH HANDLE. MAKE SURE THAT THE ANGULAR POSITION OF THE LATCH HOOK IS NOT LESS THAN 90 DEGREES FROM THE LATCH HANDLE. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, THE LATCH CAN HIT THE ENGINE OIL TUBE OR THE BAULK BRACKET AND CAUSE DAMAGE.
CAUTION: CLOSE THE LATCHES IN THE SEQUENCE THAT FOLLOWS. DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE LATCHES OF THE FAN COWL DOORS CLOSE WITH A FORCE NO MORE THAN 60 LBF (27.2 KGF). IF THE FORCE IS TOO HIGH, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE THE SPECIFIED FORCE TO CLOSE THE LATCH HANDLES. IF ONE OR MORE LATCH(ES) IS (ARE) NOT CLOSED CORRECTLY, THE FAN COWL DOORS CAN OPEN IN FLIGHT.
     (a) Engage the hook on the (L1) forward latch (5) with the related latch keeper (8).
     (b) Close the (L1) forward latch (5) until it is flush with the door surface and locked into position.
NOTE: A force between 26 lbf (11.57 daN) and 36 lbf (16.01 daN) at the end of the handle of the correctly adjusted latch is necessary to get the overcenter locking function.
     (c) Engage the hook on the (L2) center latch (4) with the related latch keeper (9).
     (d) Close the (L2) center latch (4) until it is flush with the door surface and locked into position.
     (e) Engage the hook on the (L3) aft latch (2) with the related latch keeper (9).
     (f) Close the (L3) aft latch (2) until it is flush with the door surface and locked into position.
     (g) Make sure that the three latches are correctly closed:
       1 Make sure that the distance between the left and right fan cowl doors is between 0.170 in. (4.32 mm) and 0.250 in. (6.35 mm).
       2 If the latches do not have the correct tension or a distance between doors is not within the correct range, adjust the fan cowls doors (
Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-820-802).
       3 Make sure the latch handles are flush with the adjacent fan cowl surface.
       4 Make sure the latch triggers are flush with the latch handle surfaces.
       5 If a latch handle or latch trigger is not flush, open the latch and close it again. Refer to the applicable step above.

Subtask 71-13-00-942-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Put the aircraft back to its initial configuration.
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
