Repair of the Door Seal


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION: IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU OPEN THE CARGO COMPARTMENT DOOR, RECORD ON THE WORK CARD ON THE DOOR, THE DATE AND TIME WHEN YOU OPENED IT. IF THE CARGO COMPARTMENT DOOR STAYS OPEN FOR 12 HOURS OR MORE, YOU MUST BLEED THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM RELATED TO IT. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, THE DOOR CAN CLOSE SUDDENLY WHEN YOU SET THE DOOR TO "CLOSE". THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DOOR AND TO THE AIRCRAFT STRUCTURE.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 52-31-18-010-052-A
A. Get Access
   (1) Open the applicable cargo compartment door and safety it with the support struts (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-001).
   (2) Remove the door seal, and if necessary, disconnect the door actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-000-001).
     (a) If you do not disconnect the door actuator, make sure that you do not cause damage to the seal during the repair procedure.
4. Procedure
Subtask 52-31-18-350-050-A
A. Repair of the Chafe Marks
   (1) Prepare the chafe mark with CLOTH-EMERY, VERY FINE.
   (2) Carefully degrease the chafe mark with Non Aqueous Cleaner-Non structural use - - (Material No.08BPA1) and a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
   (3) Apply a thin layer of Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) to the chafe mark with a SPATULA - NON METALLIC.
   (4) Prevent a dust layer on the treated chafe marks during the Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) drying period of 10 to 12 hours.

B. Repair of Small Cuts and Punctures
NOTE: A repair of the small cuts is only permitted if the cuts are not longer than 25.4 mm (1.0000 in.).
A repair of the punctures is only permitted if:
  • The punctures are less than 6.4 mm (0.2520 in.) and the distance between each puncture is more than 25.4 mm (1.0000 in.).
  • There are not more than three punctures in a section of 200.0 mm (7.8740 in.).
    In all other conditions, prepare a splice repair of the door seal (refer to Para. 4.C. Repair of the Very Damaged Areas).
NOTE: A minimum of 24 hours is necessary to do this repair procedure.
   (1) If less time is available, make sure that you replace the defective door seal with the new one (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-400-001).
   (2) Drill stop holes with a diameter of 2.0 mm (0.0787 in.) at the ends of the cuts.
   (3) Push the seal to open the cuts.
   (4) Lightly rub the cuts or the punctures with the CLOTH-EMERY, VERY FINE.
   (5) Carefully remove the grease from the repair area with Non Aqueous Cleaner-Non structural use - - (Material No.08BPA1) and the Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
   (6) Apply a thin layer of Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) or Silicone Adhesive Sealant-Rubber & Plastic Bonding One part - (Material No.06CED1) on the opposite surface of the cuts.
   (7) Push and hold the edges of the cuts and punctures together.
   (8) Let them dry for some minutes.
   (9) Cut pieces of Laminate Repair Patch-Pax Door Seal - - (Material No.13XJA1) to put them on the cuts.
   (10) Apply a thin layer of Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) or Silicone Adhesive Sealant-Rubber & Plastic Bonding One part - (Material No.06CED1) on the repair area to fill the stop holes.
   (11) Put the replacement tissue onto the repair area to make the repair area as smooth as the seal surface.
   (12) Put a layer of Film-Rubber Bonding Polyester Foil - (Material No.14HHB1) on the repair area.
   (13) Put the seal in the BLOCK 20X10X10 CM (6.5X3X3 IN)-WOODEN.
   (14) Compress the seal with the wooden bonding block and the CLAMPS.
   (15) Let it dry for 24 hours.
   (16) Remove the wooden bonding block, the clamps and the rubber bonding-polyester foil-film from the repair area of the seal.
   (17) Lightly rub the repair area with the CLOTH-EMERY, VERY FINE to get a smooth seal surface.

C. Repair of the Very Damaged Areas (Splice Repair)
NOTE: A minimum of 24 hours is necessary to do this repair procedure.
   (1) If less time is available, make sure that you replace the defective door seal with the new one (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-400-001)
   (2) Cut the seal at a minimum distance of 50.0 mm (1.9685 in.) from the next inflation hole to remove the damaged section of the seal.
NOTE: The minimum repair length of the section is:
  • For a straight section, 200.0 mm (7.8740 in.)
  • For a section with curves, 200.0 mm (7.8740 in.) measured from the edge of the corner.
   (3) For the straight section and the section with curves, cut a section of the replacement seal with the same length as the removed section.
   (4) Make sure that the replacement seal has the same quantity of inflation holes as the removed section.
   (5) Carefully remove the first layer of replacement tissue from the ends of the seal and the replacement section on a length of 25.4 mm (1.0000 in.) (repair area).
   (6) Lightly rub the repair area with the CLOTH-EMERY, VERY FINE.
   (7) Carefully remove the grease from the repair area with Non Aqueous Cleaner-Non structural use - - (Material No.08BPA1) and the Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
   (8) Apply a thin layer of Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) or Silicone Adhesive Sealant-Rubber & Plastic Bonding One part - (Material No.06CED1) on the ends of the seal and the replacement section.
   (9) Make sure that the inflation holes of the replacement section are in the correct position:
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE DOOR SEAL IS INSTALLED IN THE CORRECT POSITION. IF IT IS NOT INSTALLED IN THE CORRECT POSITION, IT WILL NOT INFLATE CORRECTLY DURING FLIGHT.
     (a) Make sure that the inflation holes of the replacement section are in the same position as the inflation holes of the remaining section.
NOTE: If the inflation holes are not installed in the correct position, the door seal cannot inflate correctly during the flight. This causes the cabin pressure to decrease and a disruption of the flight.
   (10) Push and hold the ends of the replacement section and the seal together.
   (11) Let them dry for some minutes.
   (12) Cut pieces of Laminate Repair Patch-Pax Door Seal - - (Material No.13XJA1) equal to the dimension of the repair area.
   (13) Apply a layer of Silicone Adhesive Sealant-General Purpose One part legacy (Material No.06CMD9) or Silicone Adhesive Sealant-Rubber & Plastic Bonding One part - (Material No.06CED1) on the mating surface of the replacement tissue and the repair area.
   (14) Wind the replacement tissue around the repair area.
   (15) Apply a layer of Film-Rubber Bonding Polyester Foil - (Material No.14HHB1) on the repair area.
   (16) Put the seal in the BLOCK 20X10X10 CM (6.5X3X3 IN)-WOODEN.
   (17) Compress the seal with the wooden bonding block and the CLAMPS.
   (18) Let it dry for 24 hours.
   (19) Remove the wooden bonding block, the clamps and the rubber bonding-polyester foil-film from the repair area of the seal.
   (20) Lightly rub the repair area with the CLOTH-EMERY, VERY FINE to get a smooth seal surface.

A. Close Access
   (1) Install the door seal, and if necessary, connect the door actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 52-31-18-400-001).
   (2) Close the applicable cargo compartment door (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-002).
