MAKE SURE THAT THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE DOES NOT TURN WHEN YOU REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP. IF THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE TURNS, IT CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THE RETAINER BAULK ARM STAYS IN THE UNLOCKED (OPEN) POSITION. THIS WILL PREVENT ACCIDENTAL MOVEMENT OF THE SLIDE-VALVE WHICH CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION:
DO NOT EXTEND THE RETAINER PIN-AND-SPRING ASSEMBLY TO MORE THAN ITS LIMIT BECAUSE THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO IT. IF THE RETAINER PIN-AND -SPRING ASSEMBLY IS DAMAGED THE SLIDE-VALVE CAN MOVE AND CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANKS.
(1) Remove the bolts (4). (2) Install the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP or the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP on the applicable fuel pump as follows:
CAUTION:
YOU MUST USE THE TOOLING HOLES WHEN YOU INSTALL THE EXTRACTOR TOOL. THIS WILL PREVENT LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
(a) Install the threaded rods (22) into: - The tooling holes (3) in the pump flange and fully into the threaded holes in the slide valve.
(3) Continue to turn the knobs (24) until the pump and slide valve start to move apart from the canister.
NOTE: The initial movement down will break the seal effect between the slide valve and the canister.
(4) Immediately after the slide valve starts to move, pull down lightly on the handles (23) of the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP. CAUTION:
DO NOT USE TOO MUCH FORCE TO PULL THE FUEL PUMP AND THE SLIDE VALVE ON TO THE BAULK ARM. THIS WILL PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE BAULK ARM AND THE RETAINING PIN AND SPRING ASSEMBLY.
(5) Continue to pull down lightly on the handles (23) of the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP until: - The stop pin on the slide valve is fully clear of its locating hole in the flange of the canister
- The movement of the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve is stopped by the baulk-arm (14) on the retaining pin and spring assembly.
NOTE: The fuel inlet through the canister is closed when the slide valve movement is completed.
(6) Use the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP to turn the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve counterclockwise until: - The head of the retaining pin is clear of the slot in the fuel pump (2).
(8) Put the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL) in position below the drain bolt (10).
WARNING:
USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
(9) Remove and discard the lockwire from the drain bolt (10). (10) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (10) with the O-ring (11).
(11) Drain the fuel from the fuel pump (2) and the fuel pump canister into the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL).
(12) Monitor the fuel that drains from the fuel pump drain hole.
(13) If the fuel flow from the fuel pump drain hole is too much to let work continue, do this procedure:
NOTE: This will make sure that the slide valve seal is correctly positioned.
(a) Install the drain bolt (10) and the O-ring (11). (b) Use the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP to turn the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve clockwise:
- Align the stop pin in the slide valve flange, with the stop pin locating hole in the canister.
(d) Push the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve up and fully into the fuel pump canister.
(e) Do steps 2 thru 6 again and remove the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve from the canister again.
(f) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (10) with the O-ring (11).
(g) Drain all fuel from the fuel pump (2) into the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL).
(14) Monitor the fuel that drains from the fuel pump drain hole again.
(15) If the fuel flow from the drain hole continues to be too much to let work continue, do this procedure:
(a) Install the drain bolt (10) and the O-ring (11).
(b) Defuel the applicable fuel tank (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-001).
(c) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (10) with the O-ring (11).
(d) Drain all fuel from the fuel pump (2) into the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL).
(16) Discard the O-ring (11).
(17) Record the position of the electrical receptacle (15).
(18) Install the hooks (21) of the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP in the holes (5).
(19) Turn the baulk-arm (14) on the retaining pin and spring assembly until it is clear of the fuel pump flange.
(20) Pull down on the handles (23) to remove the fuel pump (2) from the slide valve.
NOTE: The fuel-pump slide-valve stop-pin will not let the slide-valve be pushed into the canister. The fuel-inlet (through the canister) will stay closed until the slide-valve is turned and pushed into the canister during the fuel pump installation procedure.
(21) Remove the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP from the fuel pump (2). (22) Remove and discard the O-rings (1), (13) and (12) from the fuel pump (2).
(23) Examine the fuel pump (2) and the adjacent aircraft structure for signs of fuel leakage.
(24) If there is a fuel leakage, examine the applicable landing light assembly for fuel contamination (Ref. AMM TASK 33-42-11-000-001).
