Measurement of the surface Electrical Resistance of External Composite Panels (without Non-Conductive Finish Paint) with Electrical Conductive Tape

TASK 20-28-00-720-011-A-01
Measurement of the surface Electrical Resistance of External Composite Panels (without Non-Conductive Finish Paint) with Electrical Conductive Tape

1. Reason for the Job
This is an alternative procedure for the measurement of the surface electrical resistance of an external composite panel. This procedure is applicable without non-conductive finish paint on the antistatic paint.
You must measure the surface electrical resistance if you installed the panels after some modifications or repairs.
NOTE: The measurement of the surface electrical resistance is not necessary if the panels are installed subsequently to their removal without modifications or repairs.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 20-28-00-869-086-A
A. General
   (1) The recommended procedure for the measurement of the surface electrical resistance of an external composite panel (with or without non-conductive finishpaint on the antistatic paint) uses a resistivity test set (Ref. AMM TASK 20-28-00-720-011).
4. Procedure
Subtask 20-28-00-869-087-A
A. Measurement of the Surface Electrical Resistance
   (1) Equipment
     (a) For fairing (but not an antenna fairing or a radome), use an OHMMETER MULTIRANGE, with the applicable leads and prods:
  • Diameter 4 mm (0.16 in.).
  • Set the range to 100 KOHMS.
  • Set the tension to 500 VDC.
     (b) For an antenna fairing or a radome, use a MEGOHMETER MULTIRANGE, with the applicable leads and prods:
  • Diameter 4 mm (0.16 in.).
  • Set the range to 100 MOHMS.
  • Set the tension to 500 VDC.
     (c) TAPE - 3M CONDUCTIVE ELEC(X-1181-COPPER OR X-1170-ALU)
   (2) On the surface, put two parallel strips ( 100 mm (3.9370 in.) length) of 3M conductive electrical tape, 100 mm (3.9370 in.) apart, to make the two sides of a square.
   (3) Put a prod of the ohmmeter/megohmmeter on each strip, and read the square resistance value.
   (4) Make sure that the measured values are not more than the maximum permitted values. (Ref. AMM TASK 20-28-00-869-002)
NOTE: Do the steps (2) to (4) again more than one time at different areas of the surface.
   (5) Remove the test equipment.
   (6) Remove the electrical conductive-tape strips.
5. Close-up
Subtask 20-28-00-942-113-A
A. Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
