Elevated Oil Consumption on Engine 1



1. Possible Causes
CAUTION: FAST OIL LOSS CAN CAUSE OIL IGNITION INCIDENTS AND/OR LARGE DAMAGE TO THE
ENGINE. IF THE CAUSE OF THE ELEVATED OIL CONSUMPTION CANNOT BE CORRECTED,
REMOVE THE ENGINE FROM SERVICE.

Subtask 79-00-00-810-102-A
A. Do a check for oil consumption of more than 0.3 US Qts/hr (0.6 pt/hr).
· If oil consumption is not more than 0.3 US Qts/hr (0.6 pt/hr):
continue in service.
· If the oil consumption is more than 0.3 US Qts/hr (0.6 pt/hr):
(1) Do a check of the magnetic chip detectors Ref. AMM 79-00-00-200-011 for contamination:
(a) If there is no contamination of the magnetic chip detectors, continue to step (2).
(b) If there is contamination of the magnetic chip detectors, make an analysis of the debris Ref.
AMM 79-00-00-200-011 (Examine the debris on the MCD with a magnifying glass power 05x)
1 If debris are in the limits, continue to step (2).
2 If the debris are not in the limits, remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-000-040 and Ref. AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
(2) Do a check of the oil filters Ref. AMM 79-00-00-200-012 for contamination:
(a) If there is no contamination of oil filters, continue to step (3).
(b) If there is contamination of oil filters, make an analysis of the debris Ref. AMM 79-00-00-200-012
(Examine the debris from the filters).
1 If debris are in the limits, continue to step (3).
2 If debris are not in the limits, remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-000-040 and Ref. AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
(3) Do an inspection of the Turbine Exhaust Case (TEC) for signs of leakage from the weep hole Ref.
AMM 72-50-00-200-010 .
(a) If there are signs of oil leakage from the weep hole:
· Remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref. AMM 71-00-20-000-040 and Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
(b) If there are no signs of oil leakage from the weep hole, continue to step (4).
(4) Do a check of the oil system externals for signs of leakage to include gearbox seal drains and engine
cowl at breather exit for wetness Ref. AMM 79-20-00-200-010 .
(a) If there are signs of oil:
· Repair leaks on common sources:
. De-oiler housing Ref. AMM 72-60-31-000-010 and Ref.

. De-oiler seal Ref. AMM 72-60-31-000-010 and Ref.

· Continue to step (9).
(b) If there is no sign of oil, continue to step (5).
(5) Do a borescope inspection (BSI) for oil in compressor gas path, 2.5 bleed exit, fan exit case or fan
splitter Ref. AMM 72-00-00-200-016 .
(a) If there is oil:
· Remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref. AMM 71-00-20-000-040 and Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
(b) If there is no oil, continue to step (6).
(6) Do an internal check of the LP shaft for signs of oil leakage by removing inlet cone Ref.
AMM 72-38-11-000-010 .
(a) If there is oil leakage
· Replace the LP shaft blind cap seal at no 5 bearing compartment Ref. AMM 72-51-41-000-012
and Ref. AMM 72-51-41-400-012 .
· Clean No.5 compartment, if necessary Ref. AMM 72-50-50-100-010 .
(b) If there is no oil leakage, continue to step (7).
(7) Do a check of the No.5 bearing compartment.
(a) If the Turbine Exhaust Case (TEC) cover is not externally dry and clean Ref.
AMM 72-50-00-200-010 :
· Replace the No.5 bearing compartment seal Ref. AMM 72-51-41-000-010 Ref.
AMM 72-51-41-000-011 Ref. AMM 72-51-41-400-010 .
· Examine the No.5 bearing compartment and oil service tubes for coke (SBE 72-0461).
· Clean No.5 bearing compartment, if necessary Ref. AMM 72-50-50-100-010 .
(b) If the TEC cover is externally dry and clean, continue to step (8).
(8) Do an inspection of the fuel cooled oil cooler (FCOC) for internal leakage Ref.
AMM 79-21-43-200-010 .
(9) Do an engine idle check Ref. AMM 71-00-00-710-012 , Test No. 3 for 10 minutes and do a check of
the oil system, gearbox seal drains and turbine exhaust case Ref. AMM 72-50-00-200-010 for signs
of leakage.
(a) If source of external oil leak is repaired, return the engine to service and monitor oil consumption
on subsequent flights.
1 If oil consumption is in the limits, return the engine to normal service.
2 If oil consumption is not in the limits, remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-000-040 and Ref. AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
(b) If source of external leak is not identified, remove the ENGINE-1 ( 1000EM1 ) from service Ref.
AMM 71-00-20-000-040 Ref. AMM 71-00-20-400-040 .
