A. Test
   (1) No test is applicable.
You have found unwanted material (debris).
NOTE: For the purpose of this TSM procedure unwanted material (debris) is an item that must not be there. It can include the items that follow:
  • the remains of something broken or thus come loose from inside the aircraft fuel-tanks (example, a section of fuel-tank sealing compound)
  • a quantity of pieces (example, sealant, an old tie-wrap or locking wire)
  • something discarded (FOD or rubbish) (example, a paper towel, a cleaning rag, a coin or tool).

It does not include microbiological contamination/particles.
For the Removal of Mocrobiological Particles do the procedure AMM 28-11-00-600-003.
   (2) Try to identify the unwanted material and its source.
NOTE: If you know what the unwanted material is, and thus its possible source, it can save you a lot of time.
   (3) Go to Para. 4.A.
NOTE: The procedure that follows is a guide to help you troubleshoot for unwanted material. It is not a full investigation that would require all LRUs and fuel space to be examined.
4. Fault Isolation
Subtask 28-11-00-810-059-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Procedure
   (1) Do a visual (or complete the) inspection of the fuel-pump and the inside of its related canister (at the original location) for signs of:
  • unwanted material
  • possible damaged caused by unwanted material.

Make sure that good lighting is available.
NOTE: Damage Definitions.

Fuel-pump possible damage could be one of the items that follow:
  • distortion and marring
  • wear, cracks, burrs, scores
  • corrosion
  • erosion of the impeller.

Canister possible damage could be one of the items that follow (to the internal surface of the canister, the slide and the interface surface with pump):
  • distortion and marring
  • wear, cracks, burrs, scores
  • corrosion.
     (a) If:

  • no unwanted material or damaged is found, do step (2)

  • unwanted material and/or damage is found, do step (3).
   (2) Do the steps that follow:
     (a) Install a serviceable fuel-pump AMM 28-21-51-400-002.
     (b) Continue with your original AMM/TSM Task or, if applicable, return the aircraft to service.
   (3) Do the steps that follow:
     (a) Remove the other (second) fuel-pump on the opposite side of the center-tank AMM 28-21-51-000-002.
     (b) At the second location, do a visual inpection of the fuel-pump and canister as given in step (1).
       1 If:

  • no unwanted material or damaged is found, do step (4)

  • unwanted material and/or damage is found, do step (5).
   (4) Do the steps that follow:
     (a) Install the serviceable fuel-pump AMM 28-21-51-400-002 at the second location.
     (b) At the first location.
1 Remove all the unwanted material/debris at the fuel-pump and/or canister.
       2 Replace the damaged/unserviceable fuel-pump AMM 28-21-51-000-002 AMM 28-21-51-400-002 and/or canister AMM 28-21-52-000-003 AMM 28-21-52-400-003.
3 Get access to the related fuel-pump strainer AIPC 282105 Fig 01 item 170, AMM 28-21-52-000-003.
4 Do a visual inspection of the fuel-pump strainer and look for unwanted material.
5 Remove all the unwanted material.
6 If the fuel-pump strainer AIPC 282105 Fig 01 item 170, is found to be unserviceable, replace it AMM 28-21-52-000-003 and AMM 28-21-52-400-003.
     (c) Continue with your original AMM/TSM Task or, if applicable, return the aircraft to service.
   (5) Do the steps that follow:
     (a) Remove all the unwanted material/debris at each fuel-pump and/or canister.

     (c) Go to step (6).
   (6) Because unwanted material was found at each of the fuel-pump locations (during steps (1) and (3)) more troubleshooting steps are necessary. These steps are to find (and remove) the possible source of the unwanted material. This will stop (or reduce) the possible ingestion of more unwanted material from the center-tank.
