Removal of the Upper Swivel Joints

CAUTION: USE TWO WRENCHES TO REMOVE OR INSTALL THE TUBE COUPLING NUTS:

ONE WRENCH TO HOLD THE UNION, AND
ONE TO LOOSEN OR TIGHTEN THE COUPLING NUT.

THIS PREVENTS DAMAGE TO THE PARTS.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THERE IS NO UNWANTED MATERIAL IN THE PORTS AND ORIFICES OR DAMAGE CAN OCCUR.

CAUTION: YOU MUST INSTALL HYDRAULIC TUBES WITH HYDRAULIC FLUID AS LUBRICANT.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 78-31-49-941-093-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
(1) Open the fan cowl doors: (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-040)
(a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

(2) Put a ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) in position.

C. Make the thrust reverser unserviceable (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-481-041)

4. Procedure
Subtask 78-31-49-020-090-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

A. Removal of the Upper Swivel Joints
(1) Put a CONTAINER 5 L (1.32 USGAL) under the lower hydraulic actuator.
(2) Disconnect the lower head or the lower rod supply hose from the actuator and let the hydraulic fluid drain into the container.
(3) Connect the lower head supply hose to the actuator.
(4) TORQUE the coupling nut to between 260 and 235 lbf.in (2.94 and 2.66 m.daN )

(5) Connect the lower rod supply hose to the actuator.
(6) TORQUE the coupling nut to between 150 and 130 lbf.in (1.70 and 1.47 m.daN )

NOTE: Apply a witness line of finish paint EA4 blue 5991 (Material No.CP2245) on the nut and connection after they are torqued.

(7) Loosen the bottom bolt which attach the upper head shield to the middle hydraulic line bracket. Remove the top bolt.
(8) Remove the upper head shield from the forward frame.
(9) Disconnect the upper head or the upper rod supply hose from the swivel joint.
(10) Remove the swivel joint from the head supply or rod supply junction pipe.
(11) Remove and discard the packing (10) or (20).
(12) Put COVER - PROTECTION on the hose and pipe ends.
