PWA 83 - Cleaning of Parts Before Adhesive Bonding, Sealing or Filling
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION:
DO NOT:
- AIR BLAST CLEANED PARTS
- USE LIQUID SOLVENT TO CLEAN VAPOR DEGREASED PARTS. USE ONLY VAPORIZED SOLVENT.
CAUTION:
AFTER YOU CLEAN THE PARTS WITH AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION AND RINSE THEM, MAKE SURE THAT THEY SHOW A BREAK-FREE WATER FILM. IF NOT, CLEAN THE PARTS AGAIN UNTIL THERE IS A BREAK-FREE WATER FILM AFTER YOU RINSE THEM.
IF YOU NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS, THE RESULTS OF THE ADHESIVE BONDING, SEALING OR FILLING OPERATIONS WILL BE UNSATISFACTORY.
CAUTION:
USE CLEAN GLOVES WHEN:
- YOU CLEAN THE PARTS WITH SOLVENT
- YOU TOUCH THE CLEANED PARTS AND ASSEMBLIES.
CAUTION:
MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS NO CONTAMINATION ON YOUR CLOTHES. CONTAMINATION WILL PREVENT STRONG BONDS.

A. Cleaning of Aluminum Alloy Parts before Adhesive Bonding, Sealing or Filling
(1) PWA 83-A4 Cleaning Method.
(a) Wipe with cleanP05-038 cheesecloth - bleached, new, woven, unsized wet with P11-078 alcohol, isopropyl - reagent grade or Acetone (Material No.P11-065) .
Subtask 70-27-00-110-068-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) PWA 83-A4 Cleaning Method.
(a) Wipe with clean
NOTE: It is permitted to use a higher purity reagent grade for P11-078 alcohol, isopropyl .
NOTE: Because Acetone (Material No.P11-065) dries rapidly, additional wiping may be necessary to get a clean surface.
(b) Solvent wiped surfaces must be fully dried in air at ambient temperature or in an oven at 250 deg.F (121.11 deg.C) maximum. Drying time must be sufficient to remove remaining solvent harmful to bonding, sealing or filling processes. B. Cleaning of Titanium Alloy Parts before Adhesive Bonding, Sealing or Filling

(1) Use one of the applicable methods that follow:
(a) PWA 83-D1 Cleaning Method.
1 Specified surfaces must be abraded withP05-104 cloth, emery or P05-139 Cloth, Emery or Abrasive Paper (Material No.P05-132) to get a uniformly roughened surface. P05-104 cloth, emery or P05-139 Cloth, Emery or Abrasive Paper (Material No.P05-132) must be kept free from contamination harmful to adhesive bonding, sealing or filling processes.
2 Remove remaining abrasive by vacuuming or other method which keeps the surface free of contamination harmful to adhesive bonding, sealing or filling.
(b) PWA 83-D2 Cleaning Method.
P05-038 cheesecloth - bleached, new, woven, unsized wet with P11-078 alcohol, isopropyl - reagent grade or Acetone (Material No.P11-065) .
(c) PWA 83-D4 Cleaning Method.
1 Use the procedure in Step 4.D.(1)(b), except solvent wiping of polyurethanes and fluoroelastomers must be done only withP11-078 alcohol, isopropyl - reagent grade (or higher purity).
2 Solvent wiping of polyetherimide materials bonded with silicone materials must be by procedure Step 4.D.(1)(b), except the solvent must be Acetone (Material No.P11-065) (or higher purity) only.
