Installation of the Elevator Support Struts

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 55-16-48-860-051-A
A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001), (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-002), (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-003).
   (2) Make sure that the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING is installed in the CAPT and F/O side sticks.
   (3) Make sure that the 98D27309009003 COLLAR-DEPTH ACTUATOR or 98D27309009004 COLLAR-DEPTH ACTUATOR is installed on the servocontrol elevator.
   (4) Make sure that the warning notices are in the flight compartment to tell persons not to operate the flight controls.
   (5) Make sure that the warning notices are in position to tell persons not to operate the hydraulic systems.
   (6) Make sure that the access platforms are in position at zone 334 and/or zone 344.
   (7) Make sure that the trailing edge panels 334FB, 334EB and/or 344FB, 344EB are open/removed.

   (1) Make sure that the parts retained from the removed component are clean and in the correct condition.

D. Cleaning
   (1) Clean the component interface and/or the adjacent area with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Naphta based and Alcohol - (Material No.08BBC1) .
4. Procedure
NOTE: The procedures to install the elevator support strut (2) on the left and the right side are the same. The procedure that follows gives the installation procedure of the elevator support strut (2) on the left side.
Subtask 55-16-48-420-050-A
A. Installation of the Elevator Support Strut Bearing
   (1) Put the bearing (21) in position.
   (2) TORQUE the nut (22) to between 3.39 and 2.82 m.daN (25.00 and 20.80 lbf.ft ) T with the 98D55109010000 WRENCH-GROOVE NUT,ELEVATOR SUPPORT STRUT.
   (3) Align the hole of the nut (22) with the hole of the elevator support-strut end (1) and install the new AIPC 55-16-48-01-010 COTTER PIN (20). If this is not possible:
     (a) Drill a hole with a diameter of 2 mm (0.0787 in.) in the nut (22).
     (b) Install the new
AIPC 55-16-48-01-010 COTTER PIN (20).

C. Installation of the Elevator Support Struts on the Elevator
   (1) Apply Mineral Oil base Grease-General Purpose Medium Temp. - (Material No.
03FBB1) on all the connection components.
   (2) Install the elevator support-strut end (1) on the elevator.
   (3) Install the bush (15) in the elevator support-strut end (1) and the washer (19).
   (4) If the hinge bolt (14) is safetied with the STA-LOK nut:
     (a) Install the nut (16) with the SL90-315-3750 WRENCH - NOTCHED, TIGHTENING OF NUTS NSA5454.
     (b) TORQUE the nut (16) to between 0.55 and 0.45 m.daN (48.67 and 39.82 lbf.in ) T.
     (c) Install the locking ring (17) with the
SL90-313-3750 TOOL - INSTALLATION, TAB WASHERS STA-LOK NSA5454 (Ref. AMM TASK 20-22-00-400-001).
   (5) If the hinge bolt (14) is safetied with the Autobrake System (ABS):
     (a) Install the nut (23).
     (b) TORQUE the nut (23) to between 1.53 and 1.36 m.daN (135 and 120 lbf.in ) T.
     (c) Install the locking cup (24) and safety it with the new
AIPC 27-34-07-26-030 COTTER PIN (18).
   (6) Install the new
AIPC 27-34-07-26-010 COTTER PIN (12).

D. Installation of the Elevator Support Struts on the THS
   (1) Apply Synthetic Oil base Grease-General Purpose Lithium Thickened Low Temp. - (Material No.
03GBC1) or Mineral Oil base Grease-General Purpose Medium Temp. - (Material No.03FBB1) on all the connection components.
   (2) Install the elevator support strut (2) on the THS.
   (3) Install the bushes (9) and the bolt (8).
   (4) Install the nut (10) but do not tighten it at this time.
   (5) TORQUE the nuts (3) and (25) to between 4.07 and 3.39 m.daN (30.01 and 25.00 lbf.ft ) T.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU BEND THE TAB WASHER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SUPPORT STRUT.
   (6) Safety the nuts (3) and (25) with the tab washers (4).
   (7) TORQUE the nut (10) to between 1.80 and 0.96 m.daN (159.29 and 84.96 lbf.in )
T.
   (8) Install the new
AIPC 55-16-48-01-074 COTTER PIN (11).
   (9) Install the new
AIPC 55-16-48-01-073 COTTER PIN (7).

D. Installation of the Elevator Support Struts on the THS
   (1) Apply Synthetic Oil base Grease-General Purpose Lithium Thickened Low Temp. - (Material No.
03GBC1) or Mineral Oil base Grease-General Purpose Medium Temp. - (Material No.03FBB1) on all the connection components.
   (2) Install the elevator support strut (2) on the THS.
   (3) Install the bushes (9) and the bolt (8).
   (4) If the bolt (8) is safetied with the STA-LOK nut:
     (a) Install the nut (10) but do not tighten it at this time.
   (5) If the bolt (8) is safetied with the castellated nut:
     (a) Install the nut (13) but do not tighten it at this time.
   (6) TORQUE the nuts (3) and (25) to between 4.07 and 3.39 m.daN (30.01 and 25.00 lbf.ft ) T.
CAUTION: WHEN YOU BEND THE TAB WASHER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SUPPORT STRUT.
   (7) Safety the nuts (3) and (25) with the tab washers (4).
   (8) If the bolt (8) is safetied with the STA-LOK nut:
     (a) TORQUE the nut (10) to between 1.80 and 0.96 m.daN (159.29 and 84.96 lbf.in )
T.
     (b) Install the internal locking ring (11) with the
SL90-626-3125 TOOL - INSTALLATION, WASHERS SL40871 (Ref. AMM TASK 20-22-00-400-001).
   (9) If the bolt (8) is safetied with the castellated nut:
     (a) TORQUE the nut (13) to between 1.80 and 0.96 m.daN (159.29 and 84.96 lbf.in ) T.
   (10) Install the new
AIPC 55-16-48-01-073 COTTER PIN (7).
5. Close-up

   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.

C. Remove Locking Devices
   (1) Remove the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING from the CAPT and F/O side stick controllers.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU REMOVE THE "COLLAR-ELEVATOR SERVO CONTROL SAFETY" BEFORE YOU PRESSURIZE THE ELEVATOR SERVO CONTROL. IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE COLLAR, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE ELEVATOR SERVO CONTROL.
   (2) Remove the 98D27309009003 COLLAR-DEPTH ACTUATOR or 98D27309009004 COLLAR-DEPTH ACTUATOR from the servocontrol elevator.

D. Remove Ground Equipment
   (1) Remove the ground support and maintenance equipment, the special and standard tools and all other items.
   (2) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
   (3) Remove the access platform(s).
