Installation of the Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) Leading Edge

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.

3. Job Set-up

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Make sure that the hydraulic systems are depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001), (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-002), (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-003).
   (2) Make sure that the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING is in the CAPT and F/O side sick controllers.
   (3) Make sure that the warning notices are in the flight compartment to tell persons not to operate the flight controls.
   (4) Make sure that the warning notices are in position to tell persons not to operate the hydraulic systems.
   (5) Make sure that the access platforms are in position at zone 330 and/or 340.

4. Procedure
NOTE: Only the installation of the LH leading edge is shown. The installation of the RH leading edge is the same.
Subtask 55-12-11-560-050-B
A. Prepare the components for installation:
   (1) Make sure that the rubber strip (7) is in good condition.

NOTE: If necessary, replace the rubber strip (7).
   (2) Make sure that the anchor nuts are in good condition.
   (3) Remove the old sealant from the mating surfaces of the leading edge sections, the ribs and the spar box upper and lower shells. Use a SCRAPER - NON METALLIC and Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Naphta based and Alcohol - (Material No.08BBC1) .
Subtask 55-12-11-420-050-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Install the leading edge intersection (1).
   (1) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-Low Adhesion Brushable - (Material No.06AEA1) to the mating surfaces along the leading edge rib 1 and the spar box upper and lower shell.
   (2) Apply Release Agent-- Liquid Wax - (Material No.14DBB1) to the mating surfaces of the leading edge intersection (1).
   (3) Put the leading edge intersection (1) in position.
   (4) Make sure that the rubber strip (7) touches the fuselage skin.
   (5) Install and tighten the screws (4).

C. Install the inboard and outboard leading edge sections (2) and (3).
   (1) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-Low Adhesion Brushable - (Material No.06AEA1) to the mating surfaces along the leading edge ribs and the spar box upper and lower shells.
   (2) Apply Release Agent-- Liquid Wax - (Material No.14DBB1) to the mating surfaces of the leading edge sections (2) and (3).
   (3) Put the leading edge sections (2) and (3) in position.
   (4) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-General Purpose Interfay - (Material No.06AAC1) to the screws (5) and (6).
   (5) Install the screws (4), (5) and (6). Do not tight the screws at this time.
   (6) Let the sealant cure
   (7) Tighten the screws (4), (5) and (6).

D. Sealing
   (1) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-General Purpose Fillet - (Material No.06AAB1) to the gap around each leading edge section (2) and (3) and the leading edge intersection (1).

E. Installation of the Leading Edge Section
   (1) Put the leading edge section (1) in position.
   (2) Make sure that the rubber strip (7) touches the fuselage skin.
   (3) Install and tighten the screws (4).

F. Installation of the Inboard and Outboard Leading-Edge Sections
   (1) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-General Purpose Interfay - (Material No.06AAC1) on the mating surfaces of the leading edge section (3) at RIB25 and along a minimum of 250 mm (9.843 in.).
   (2) Apply the Release Agent-- Solvant Base - (Material No.14DCB1) on the mating surfaces of the leading edge section (3) at RIB25 and along a minimum of 250 mm (9.843 in.).
   (3) Put the leading edge sections (2) and (3) in position.
   (4) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-General Purpose Interfay - (Material No.06AAC1) on the screws (5) and (6).
   (5) Install the screws (4), (5) and (6).
   (6) Let the sealant cure before you tighten the screws (4), (5) and (6).
   (7) Tighten the screws (4), (5) and (6).

G. Sealing
   (1) Apply Polysulfide Sealant-General Purpose Fillet - (Material No.06AAB1) on the spaces around the leading edge sections (1), (2) and (3).
   (2) Apply the Release Agent-- Solvant Base - (Material No.14DCB1) on the spaces around the leading edge sections (1), (2) and (3).

H. Cleaning
   (1) Remove the unwanted sealant with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Naphta based and Alcohol - (Material No.08BBC1) .
   (2) Clean the surface of the leading edge with Non Aqueous Cleaner-General - - (Material No.08BAA9)

I. Remove Locking Pins
   (1) Remove the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING from the CAPT and F/O side stick controllers.

   (1) Operate the horizontal stabilizer through the full range of travel. Make sure that the rubber strip does not deform against the fuselage.

B. Remove Ground Equipment
   (1) Remove the ground support and maintenance equipment, the special and standard tools and all other items.
