Installation of the Safety Device of the Ram Air Turbine

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE RAT TRAVEL RANGE IS CLEAR BEFORE YOU EXTEND/RETRACT THE RAT.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.

1. Reason for the Job
To prevent accidental deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT).
When you work near the RAT, you must install the safety device.

A. Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the RAT:

on the overhead panels 21VU and 40VU.

B. Get Access
(1) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position at the avionics compartment doors 812 and 822.
(2) Open the access doors 812 and 822.
(3) Open the access door 195BB
(4) Open the access panels of the AC/DC emergency power center 106VU and the access panels of the BATTERY power center 105VU.

4. Procedure

A. Installation of the Safety Device

RAT Safety Device

(1) Put the 98D29208246000 SAFETY DEVICE-RAT or the 98D29208246001 DEVICE-SAFETY,RAT (6) in position between the RAT (1) and the structure (2).
(2) Move the thrust piece (7) apart so that the ends of the 98D29208246000 SAFETY DEVICE-RAT or the 98D29208246001 DEVICE-SAFETY,RAT (6) are on the structure (2).
(3) Tighten the cross handle (3) to keep the 98D29208246000 SAFETY DEVICE-RAT or the 98D29208246001 DEVICE-SAFETY,RAT in position.

CAUTION: TO PREVENT A LIFT UP OF THE RAT, MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST PLATE DOES NOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE RAT.

(4) Turn the cross handle (4) in the clockwise direction until there is clearance of at least 1 mm (0.0394 in.) between the thrust plate (8) and the RAT (1).
(5) Make sure that the signal flag (5) hangs outside of the aircraft so that you can see it.
