Installation of Expansion Joints

TASK 20-26-00-910-002-A
Installation of Expansion Joints

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
1. Reason for the Job
This topic shows a typical installation of the expansion joints. This typical installation prevents damage to the bleed duct seals and subsequent leakage.

A. Installation of the Expansion Joints
   (1) Visual inspection
     (a) Make sure that the seal housings on the female duct and the contact surface on the male ducts are clean and without deposits or lubricant. If you find dirt, deposits or lubricant, you must clean, flush and dry the surface(s) before you install a new duct seal.
     (b) Visually examine the seal contact surfaces on the male and female ducts for deformation or too much wear.
   (2) Seal installation
NOTE: Remove the seal(s) from the packaging immediately before you install it (them). Make sure that you do not cause contamination of the seal(s) with chemicals or dust particles during its/their installation.
NOTE: Each time you disconnect an expansion joint or remove a sleeve, you must discard the seals on the flanges and replace them with new ones.
     (a) For ABS0737-XXX seals and Pre ABS1040-XXX

1 Carefully install the seal ABS0737-XXX in the housing grooves. Install the seal in the correct direction and in the correct position.
NOTE: The ABS0737-XXX seal type is the recommended replacement P/N. Other seal types that you can use are:
  • NSA8054-XXX-08 with NSA8054-XXX-09,
  • ABS0605-XXX,
  • ABS0632-XXX.
     (b) For ABS1040-XXX seals

1 Install the outer ring (1) in the duct groove.
2 Carefully install the inner ring (2) with the spring on the pressure side.
   (3) Lubricant
CAUTION: USE ONLY THE SPECIFIED LUBRICANT TO LUBRICATE THE O-RINGS AND THE PACKINGS. OTHER LUBRICANTS CAN CAUSE SMOKE OR A SMELL IN THE CABIN WHEN THEY BECOME HOT.
     (a) For ABS0737-XXX seals and Pre ABS1040-XXX

NOTE: The seals are supplied pre-lubricated and usually no more lubrication is necessary. In areas where the installation is not easy (ducting angulation), you can apply a thin layer of lubricant on the inner seal surface or on the sliding surface.
Recommended lubricants:
  • For the ABS0737-XXX seal type, use only Dry lubricant-General Assembly Molybdenum Disulfide - (Material No.03QBB9)
  • For other types of seals, use Dry lubricant-General Assembly Molybdenum Disulfide - (Material No.03QBB9) or Lubricant-Rubber seal Silicone System (Material No.03PEC2) .
     (b) For ABS1040-XXX
Do not use lubricants for the installation of ABS1040-XXX seals.
   (4) Duct connection
     (a) For ABS0737-XXX seals and Pre ABS1040-XXX
1 Engage the male sleeve with the seal and connect the ducts. Make sure that you do not cause damage to the seal during the operation.
2 Align the two ducts on the same axis. There must not be more misalignment than 3 degrees in all directions:
a Measure distance "X" between duct flanges "A" and B":
  • This distance must be the same (+/- 2 mm (0.078 in.)) around the full circumference of the duct to make sure that the two flanges are parallel.
3 Make sure that there are no side loads on the assembly.
     (b) For ABS1040-XXX
1 Carefully install the male duct in the female sleeve and move the duct around lightly. This is to make the seal agree with the shape of the duct.
2 Align the two ducts on the same axis. There must not be more misalignment than 3 degrees in all directions:
a Measure distance "X" between duct flanges "A" and B":
  • This distance must be the same (+/- 2 mm (0.078 in.)) around the full circumference of the duct. This is to make sure that the two flanges are parallel.
3 Make sure that there are no side loads on the assembly.
