A. Inspection of the Control Cables
(1) Check for broken wires:
(a) There is a higher risk that wires will break in the parts of the cables that go through fairleads, through pressure seals, around pulleys, tension regulators and quadrants.
(b) Examine the cables for broken wires. To do this, move a cloth along the cable, in the two directions.
(c) If the cloth catches on the cable:
(a) Do a visual inspection of the cables, specially the parts of the cables that can touch fairleads and pressure seals, or that go around pulleys, tension regulators and quadrants.
Make sure that they are not worn.
(b) The permitted wear limits in a same one-inch (25.4 mm) length of cable are:
1 If you do not find corrosion:
a Protect the cable (Ref. AMM TASK 20-24-11-100-001).
2 If you find surface corrosion:
a Use a cloth to remove it.
(1) Check for broken wires:
(a) There is a higher risk that wires will break in the parts of the cables that go through fairleads, through pressure seals, around pulleys, tension regulators and quadrants.
(b) Examine the cables for broken wires. To do this, move a cloth along the cable, in the two directions.
(c) If the cloth catches on the cable:
- Do a visual inspection to find the broken wires.
- For a class 7 x 19 cable, 6 broken wires in a same one-inch (25.4 mm) length of cable with not more than 3 broken wires for each strand.
- For a class 7 x 7 cable, 3 broken wires in a same one-inch (25.4 mm) length of cable with not more than 2 broken wires for each strand.
- There must be no broken wires in two consecutive one-inch (25.4 mm) lengths of cable.
- For the lengths of cables which go around pulleys or through fairleads and pressure seals, not more than 3 broken wires are permitted.
If broken wires are found above acceptable limits, replace the cable.
(a) Do a visual inspection of the cables, specially the parts of the cables that can touch fairleads and pressure seals, or that go around pulleys, tension regulators and quadrants.
Make sure that they are not worn.
(b) The permitted wear limits in a same one-inch (25.4 mm) length of cable are:
- For a class 7 x 19 cable, a maximum of 6 wires worn to 50 % or more of their diameter,
- For a class 7 x 7 cable, a maximum of 3 wires worn to 50 % or more of their diameter,
if there are no broken wires.
- The number of permitted worn wires in a same one-inch (25.4 mm) length of cable is decreased by one wire for every broken wire.
- A maximum of two one-inch (25.4 mm) lengths of cable with wear (within the limits specified above) is permitted on the total length of the cable (between the two cable terminals), if the wear is not on two consecutive one-inch (25.4 mm) lengths of cable.
- If a wire is worn to more than 60 % of its diameter, you must call it a broken wire.
NOTE: Corrosion of cables specially occurs in these areas:
(a) Do a detailed visual inspection of the cable for corrosion: - Battery compartments,
- Toilets,
- Landing gear wells,
- Trimmable Horizontal Stabilizer (THS) apron area,
- Other areas where fumes, vapors and liquids that can cause corrosion can collect.
1 If you do not find corrosion:
a Protect the cable (Ref. AMM TASK 20-24-11-100-001).
2 If you find surface corrosion:
a Use a cloth to remove it.
- If you no longer see signs of corrosion, protect the cable (Ref. AMM TASK 20-24-11-100-001).
- If you continue to see signs of corrosion:
. Use a metallic stainless steel brush to remove it.
. If you no longer see signs of corrosion, protect the cable (Ref. AMM TASK 20-24-11-100-001).
. If you continue to see signs of corrosion on the cable, replace it and protect the new cable (Ref. AMM TASK 20-24-11-100-001).
