EMERGENCY ESCAPE SLIDE RELEASE AND OVERPRESSURE WARNING SYSTEMS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
A. Emergency Escape-Slide Warning
The indicator light which shows that the escape slide is armed warns the person who tries to open a door or an emergency exit of the status of the door or exit escape slide.
The indicator light, which shows that the escape slide is armed, gives a warning to the person who tries to open a door, an emergency exit door or an overwing emergency exit-door. If the person continues to open the door, there is a risk of unintended deployment of the escape slide. This can cause injuries to persons on the ground or damage to equipment on the outer side of the aircraft.
B. Overpressure Warning
In some conditions, there is a risk of overpressure in the cabin. The CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panel tells the person in or out of the aircraft that it is dangerous to open the passenger/crew door or emergency exit door. The remaining pressure in the cabin can cause sudden opening of the door, which can cause injuries to persons or damage to the aircraft. The cabin pressure warning-function is available only when the engines are stopped and the escape slide is disarmed.

3. System Description
A. Emergency Escape-Slide Warning
When you open a passenger/crew door, or a flap which gives access to the control handle of an emergency exit a logic 1 is sent.
The slide armed data is related to the emission of a logic 0 on the passenger/crew doors and of a logic 1 on the emergency exits.
When a person tries to open a passenger/crew door, or the control handle flap of an emergency exit with the escape slide in the armed configuration, the signals are sent to the indicator light through a logic AND gate.
In the case of the passenger/crew doors, a logic inverter changes the signal related to the arming of the escape slide into a logic 1.
The 2 inputs of the indicator light are in logic state 1 and this causes the indicator light to come on.
When you open a passenger/crew door or an emergency exit a logic 1 is sent.
The slide armed data is related to the emission of a logic 0.
When a person tries to open a passenger/crew door or the emergency exit with the escape slide in the armed configuration, the signals are sent to the indicator light through a logic AND gate.
A logic inverter changes the signal related to the arming of the escape slide into a logic 1.
The 2 inputs of the indicator light are in logic state 1 and this causes the indicator light to come on.
When you open a passenger/crew door, an emergency exit or an overwing emergency exit-door, a logic 1 is sent.
The slide armed status is related to the emission of a logic 0.
When a person tries to open one of the doors and the escape slide is armed, the signals are sent to the indicator light through a logic AND gate.
A logic inverter changes the signal related to the arming of the escape slide into a logic 1.
The two inputs of the indicator light are in logic state 1 and this makes the indicator light come on.
For the passenger/crew door or emergency exit doors, the SLIDE ARMED status is related to the near target.
For the overwing emergency exit-doors, the SLIDE ARMED status is related to the far target.
B. Overpressure Warning
(1) Each CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panel receives the data that follow:
(a) Slide disarmed. This data is related to a logic 1.
(b) The oil pressure decreases on one of the two engines or on the two engines.
If one or two engines is(are) stopped:
  • Two contactors send a signal at the same time to the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panel, and
  • Relays 18WN1 and 18WN2 are de-energized.
(c) Overpressure indication from cabin-pressure detection pressure switch 14WN.
When the passenger cabin pressure is more than 2.5mb, a ground signal is sent to the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panel after five seconds. This prevents the other unwanted warning.
When these three data occur at the same time, the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panel flashes.

4. Power Supply
A. Emergency Escape-Slide Warning
The circuit, which indicates that the escape slide is armed, gets its power supply from battery bus bar 301PP. When this bus bar is not available, the circuit is supplied from hot bus bar 702PP.
B. Overpressure Warning
(1) The CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels are supplied through the SLIDE ARMED indicator lights, from battery bus bar 301 or hot bus bar 702PP.

5. Component Description
A. Emergency Escape-Slide Warning
(1) Circuit breakers
Two circuit breakers are monitored. They enable supply of the circuit with 28VDC and are installed on the panel 121VU.
(2) Relay [12WN]
The relay is installed in panel 103VU. It enables power supply changeover from the battery busbar to the hot busbar. It is supplied by the battery busbar.
(3) SLIDE ARMED indicator lights

[1WN1] [1WN2] [2WN1] [2WN2] [3WN1] [3WN2]
They warn any person who tries to open a door with the escape slide in the armed configuration.
Bus bars 301PP or 702PP supply continuously the electronic system of these indicator lights.
The consumption (with the lamps off) of each indicator light is less than 10mA.
These indicator lights include:
  • 1 relay which supplies the proximity switches:
either with 6VDC (relay energized) from the batteries of the WL circuit or
or with 28VDC (relay de-energized) from the battery or the hot busbars
  • terminals which are used to:
send data to the ECAM system,
    supply the other indicator lights
send slide disarmed data to the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels.
(4) Circuit breakers [13WN] [15WN]
They supply the circuit with 28VDC and are installed on panel 121VU.
(5) Relay [12WN]
This relay is installed in panel 103VU. It enables power supply from the battery busbar to the hot busbar. The battery bus bar supplies power to the relay.
(6) SLIDE ARMED indicator lights

They give a warning to the person who tries to open a door with the escape slide in the armed configuration.
Bus bars 301PP or 702PP continuously apply the electronic system of these indicator lights.
The energy consumption (with the lamps off) of each indicator light is less than 10mA.
These indicator lights include:
(a) One relay which supplies the proximity switches with:
  • 6VDC (relay energized) from the batteries of the WL circuit, or
  • 28VDC (relay de-energized) from the battery or the hot bus bars.
(b) Terminals which are used to:
  • Send data to the ECAM system,
  • Supply the other indicator lights,
  • Send slide disarmed data to the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels.

B. Overpressure Warning
(1) Relays [18WN1] [18WN2]
When one of the engines or the two engines is(are) stopped, one of these relays or the two relays are de-energized and send a ground signal.
(2) Pressure switch [14WN]
Its function is to measure the cabin pressure. It is made of a membrane which activates a switch when the cabin pressure is more than 2.5 mb (transmission of logic 0).
(3) CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels [16WN1] [16WN2] [17WN1] [17WN2]

(1) When the cabin pressure is more than 2.5 mb, with one or the two engines stopped and the escape slides disarmed, the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels flash.
If there is an emergency escape, the slide armed data prevent the flashing of the CABIN PRESSURE warning-light panels.
This prevents the panic of the passengers.
In the cockpit, an amber symbol comes into view on the ECAM lower display-unit which identifies the open door.
