General Visual Inspection (GVI) of the Engine Starting System


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE AFTER SHUTDOWN. THE ENGINE CAN STAY HOT FOR A LONG TIME. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, INJURY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: WIPE CLEAN ALL PARTS AND TOOLS AS NECESSARY TO REMOVE UNWANTED DEBRIS AND PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE.
1. Reason for the Job
This procedure gives the instructions to do a general visual inspection of the engine starting system.

   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-802):

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser for Ground Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-805).

   (1) Open the right thrust reverser cowl-doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-802):

     (b) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENG 2)

4. Procedure
Subtask 80-11-00-210-057-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. General Visual Inspection of the Engine Starting System
   (1) Visually inspect the engine starting system components for damage and correct installation.
   (2) The engine starting system components include the following:
     (a) Starter,
     (b) Starter air control valve,
     (c) Brackets and clamps,
     (d) Starter air ducts (upper and lower).
   (3) For the permitted service damage limits or disposition for damage seen, refer to the Table 1.

DISPOSITION
Starter ducts (upper and lower) for:


Looseness or incorrect assembly
Any amount.
Not permitted. Tighten or reassemble as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-400-802).
Round bottom dents
Dents 0.050 in. (1.27 mm) depth or less, or more than ten times the depth across and three inches or more to the nearest edge of a different dent.
Permitted.

Dents more than 0.050 in. (1.27 mm) depth or less than ten times the depth across.
Not permitted. Replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-400-802).
Nicks or scratches
Up to 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth or less.
Permitted.

More than 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth.
Not permitted. Replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-400-802).
Cracks
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the duct (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-49-400-802).
Starter duct attachment clamps and support brackets for:


Looseness or incorrect assembly
Any amount.
Not permitted. Tighten or reassemble as necessary.
Starter for:


Looseness or incorrect assembly

Not permitted. Tighten or reassemble as necessary.
Oil leakage from the starter mounting pad or exhaust baffles
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the starter and interface packing (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-400-801).
Nicks, dents or scratches
Up to 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth or less.
Permitted.

More than 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth.
Not permitted. Replace the starter (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-400-801).
Cracks
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the starter (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-01-400-801).
Starter air control valve for:


Looseness or incorrect assembly
Any amount.
Not permitted. Tighten or reassemble as necessary.
Starter air control valve cooling tube for:


Cracks
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the SVA.
Nicks, scratches, chaffing or pitting
Any quantity less than 0.003 in. (0.08 mm) depth.
Permitted.
Dents
Up to 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth or less.
Permitted.
Starter air control valve cooling shroud for:


Cracks
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the shroud.
Nicks, dents or scratches
Up to 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth or less.
Permitted.

More than 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth.
Not permitted. Replace the shroud.
Starter air control valve electrical connection for:


Looseness or incorrect assembly
Any amount.
Not permitted. Tighten or reassemble as necessary.
Nicks, dents, scratches or other damage
Up to 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth or less.
Permitted.

More than 0.025 in. (0.63 mm) depth.
Not permitted. Replace the connector.
Cracked or broken areas
Any amount.
Not permitted. Replace the connector.

B. Do the reactivation of the thrust reverser system after ground maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-440-805).

   (2) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
   (3) Make sure that all the circuit breakers shown in the paragraph Procedure of the engine interface unit installation are closed. If they are not, close them in the recommended sequence
