Inspection of the Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler for Internal Leakage [IAE]

TASK 79-21-43-200-010-B
Inspection of the Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler for Internal Leakage

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: DO NOT LET ENGINE OIL STAY ON YOUR SKIN FOR A LONG TIME. FLUSH THE OIL FROM YOUR SKIN WITH WATER. THE OIL IS POISONOUS AND CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET ENGINE FUEL OR OIL FALL ON THE ENGINE. UNWANTED FUEL OR OIL MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY WITH A CLEAN LINT FREE CLOTH. THE FUEL OR OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE PROTECTION AND TO SOME PARTS.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT OIL THAT HAS BEEN DRAINED FROM THE ENGINE BACK IN TO THE OIL SYSTEM.

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the ENG/MODE selector switch and the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of the maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
Subtask 79-21-43-010-063-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-010):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)
437AL 438AR.
     (b) FOR [1000EM2] (ENGINE-2)
447AL 448AR.
   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 79-21-43-210-052-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Examine FCOC atmospheric vent hole
   (1) Examine atmospheric vent hole for signs of oil or fuel wetting or leaking.
NOTE: Oil or fuel in this location is indicative of either internal cracking between the fuel and oil seals or degradation of the seals.
   (2) If the fluid is only wetting (characterized by a moist surface without drip formation) the surface of the FCOC, the unit can continue operation for 10 cycles before replacement (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-000-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-400-010).
   (3) If the fluid is leaking (characterized by the formation of a drop or expectancy of a drop that will detach during engine operation), replace the unit (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-000-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-400-010).
Subtask 79-21-43-680-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Drain the oil from the FCOC
   (1) Cut and discard the lockwire from the oil drain plug (1).
   (2) Position the container to catch all the oil which drains from the FCOC.
   (3) Remove the oil drain plug (1) and drain the oil into the CONTAINER 20L (5 USGAL).
   (4) Remove and discard the sealing ring (2).
Subtask 79-21-43-210-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
C. Examine the drained oil
   (1) If the drained oil smells of fuel, replace the FCOC (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-000-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-400-010).
   (2) Drain and fill the engine oil system (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-011).
   (3) If fuel is not found in the drained oil, examine the FCOC:
     (a) Check for non availability of APU bleed pressure and that the rotary selector switch on the 115VU is at the NORM position.
     (b) Switch to the on position:
WARNING: THE ENGINE WILL START BY PLACING THE AFFECTED MASTER SWITCH TO THE ON POSITION, IF ABOVE REQUIREMENTS ARE NOT MET.
1 On the HYD/FUEL panel 40VU, turn the applicable aircraft fuel boostpump switch to on to supply fuel to the related engine.
     (c) On the ENG panel 115VU, place the applicable ENG/MASTER control switch to the ON position (opening the LP valve).
     (d) Examine for fuel leakage at the FCOC oil drain port.
     (e) If leakage is noted at the FCOC oil drain port:
1 Replace the FCOC (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-000-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-43-400-010).
2 Drain and fill the engine oil system (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-010) and (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-79-610-011).
   (4) If fuel leakage is not noted at the FCOC drain port, do these operations:
     (a) Install the oil drain plug (1).
     (b) Install the AIPC 79-21-43-80-020 SEALING RING (2) to the drain plug (1) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-13-911-010).
     (c) Install the drain plug (1) to the FCOC.
     (d) TORQUE the oil drain plug (1) to between 120 and 110 lbf.in (1.36 and 1.24 m.daN ) T (Ref. AMM TASK 70-23-11-911-013).
     (e) Safety the drain plug (1) with the lockwire (Material No.V02-147) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-40-11-911-014).
