Removal of the Fuel Cooled Oil Cooler


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE FUEL OR OIL SYSTEM COMPONENTS FOR A SHORT TIME AFTER THE ENGINE IS SHUT DOWN. THE ENGINE COMPONENTS STAY HOT FOR SOME TIME AND CAN CAUSE INJURY.
WARNING: DO NOT GET THE FLUID ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. IF YOU DO:
  • FLUSH IT AWAY WITH CLEAN WATER
  • GET MEDICAL AID.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL DURING REMOVAL INSTALLATION OF THE FUEL COOLED OIL COOLER. IT WEIGHS 33lb (15kg).
CAUTION: DO NOT LET ENGINE FUEL OR OIL FALL ON THE ENGINE. UNWANTED FUEL OR OIL MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY WITH A CLEAN LINT FREE CLOTH. THE FUEL OR OIL CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE PROTECTION AND TO SOME PARTS.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 79-21-43-941-054-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the "ENG/MASTER 1(2)" control switch is set to the "OFF" position.
     (b) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Do the Electronic Instrument System (EIS) start procedure (upper ECAM Display Unit (DU) and lower ECAM DU only) (Ref. AMM TASK 31-60-00-860-001).
   (3) Make sure that, on the ENG fuel page, the LP valve is shown closed.
   (4) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (5) On overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the "ON" legend of the "ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2)" pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) 1(2).

   (1) Open the fan cowls (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-010):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position.
4. Procedure
Subtask 79-21-43-680-053-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Drain the fuel from the fuel cooled oil cooler (FCOC)
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT FUEL THAT HAS BEEN DRAINED FROM THE ENGINE BACK IN TO THE FUEL SYSTEM.
   (1) Cut and discard the lockwire from the fuel drain plug (5).
   (2) Position the container to catch all the fuel which drains from the FCOC.
   (3) Remove the fuel drain plug (5) and drain the fuel in to the CONTAINER 30 L(8 USGAL).
   (4) Remove and discard the sealing ring (6).
   (5) If a loose attachment is found remove the plug (7) as necessary.
     (a) Remove the plug (7). Use the IAE1J13400 WRENCH-SPECIAL.
     (b) Remove and discard the packing (8).
   (6) Drain the oil from the FCOC
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT OIL THAT HAS BEEN DRAINED FROM THE ENGINE BACK IN TO THE OIL SYSTEM.
     (a) Cut and discard the lockwire from the oil drain plug (10).
     (b) Position the container to catch all the oil which drains from the FCOC.
     (c) Remove the oil drain plug (10) and drain the oil in to the CONTAINER 30 L(8 USGAL).
     (d) Remove and discard the sealing ring (9).

B. A5 series: Disconnection of the electrical connectors (1), (2), (3) and (4).

SBE 73-0071: Fuel and Control - Replacement of fuel temperature thermocouple with stud and nut termination.

SBE 71-0183: Power Plant - Electrical Harnesses - Introduction of production standard EEC harness to suit FCOC fuel temperature thermocouple with stud type thermocouple.

   (1) Disconnect the electrical connectors (1), (2), (3).
   (2) Disconnect the electrical connector (4) 4017KS-A.
     (a) If the thermocouple is not to be removed, remove and install the two thermocouple securing bolts (105) one at a time.
     (b) Remove the two bolts (105) that secure the thermocouple. Disconnect the harness ground connectors and refit the bolts.
     (c) Remove the four nuts (106) and (107) and disconnect the terminals of electrical connector (4).

D. Disconnect the fuel tubes (11) and (12).

   (1) Cut and discard the wire and disconnect the fuel tubes (11) and (12) from the Fuel Diverter and Return Valve (FDRV).
   (2) Drain any remaining fuel in to the container.

   (1) Remove the bolt (39), the washer (40), the spacers (41) and (124) from the clipping point 0795.
   (2) Remove the bolt (38), the washer (37), the spacers (122) and (123) and the nut (36) from the clipping points 0789.
   (3) Remove the bolt (33), the washer (34) and the nut (35) at the clipping points 0921.
   (4) Remove the bolt (42) and the washer (45), the spacer (44) and the nut (46) from the clipping point 0922.
   (5) Remove the bolt (28) and the spacer (29) from the clipping point 1072.
   (6) Position the container to catch all the fuel drain from the fuel tube (16) and the FMU.
   (7) Remove the bolts (24) that attach the tube (16) to the FMU.
   (8) Remove and discard the sealing ring (25) from the tube (16) to the FMU.
   (9) Remove the bolts (17) and the seal housing (14) that attach the tube (16) to the FDRV.
   (10) Remove and discard the sealing rings (13) and (15) from the tube (16) and the seal housing (14).
     (a) Examine the housing (14) for wear (Ref. AMM TASK 73-11-49-200-010)
   (11) Remove the tube (16).

G. Remove the IDG FCOC to FDRV fuel tube (21).

   (1) Remove the bolts (22) and the seal housing (19) that attach the tube (21) to the FDRV.
   (2) Remove and discard the sealing rings (18) and (20) from the tube (21) and the seal housing (19).
     (a) Examine the housing (19) for wear (Ref. AMM TASK 73-11-49-200-010).
   (3) Remove the bolts (27) that attach the tube (21) to the IDG FCOC.
   (4) Remove and discard the sealing ring (23) from the tube (21) to the IDG FCOC.
   (5) Remove the tube (21).

H. Disconnect the oil tubes (48) and (52)

   (2) Disconnect the tube (53) and discard the sealing ring (55).

SBE 73-0078: Engine - Fuel and control - Introduce a repositioned FCOC fuel flow restrictor and associated fuel tubes.

   (1) Remove the bolts (100) that attach the tube (98) to the FCOC.
   (2) Remove the bolts (102) and the nuts (103) that attach the tube (98) to the tube (99).
   (3) Disconnect the tube (98) and discard the sealing rings (101) and (104).

K. Disconnect the LP fuel pump element to FDRV fuel tube (56)

   (1) Remove and discard the lockwire from the tube (56) nut.
   (2) Disconnect the tube (56) from the tube (99) with the IAE1R18003 WRENCH.
   (3) Remove the bolts (57), the seal housing (60) and the fire shield (59) that attach the tube (56) to the FDRV.
   (4) Remove and discard the sealing rings (58) and (61) from the tube (56) and the seal housing (60).

L. Disconnect the FDRV to Aircraft fuel tube (62)

   (1) Remove the bolts (63) that attach the tube (62) to the FDRV.
   (2) Disconnect the tube (62) and discard the sealing ring (64).

M. Remove the FCOC to HP pump fuel tube (68).

   (1) Remove the bolts (66) that attach the tube (68) to the HP fuel pump.
   (2) Position the container to catch all the fuel that will drain from the tube (68).
   (3) Remove the bolts (67) that attach the tube (68) to the FCOC.
   (4) Remove the tube (68) and discard the sealing rings (65) and (69).

N. Disconnect the drain tube (70) from the FDRV and drain the remaining fuel into the container.

   (1) Remove the bolt (80), the washer (81) and the nut (84) and remove the bonding strap (83) from the bracket of FCOC.
   (2) Remove the bolt (71), the washer (72) and the nut (75) and remove the bonding strap (73) from the pin (74).
CAUTION: HOLD THE WEIGHT OF THE FCOC AND FDRV BEFORE THE BOLTS ARE REMOVED.
   (3) Remove the bolts (76), (77) and (85), the nuts (78) and (79) and the bush (82).
   (4) Remove the pin (74) from the FCOC.
   (5) Remove the FCOC and FDRV.

   (1) Remove the bolt (80), the washer (81) and the nut (84) and remove the bonding strap (83) from the bracket of the FCOC.
   (2) Remove the bolts (88) and (92), the washers (87) and (93) and the nut (86) and remove the bonding strap (94).
CAUTION: HOLD THE WEIGHT OF THE FCOC AND FDRV BEFORE THE BOLTS ARE REMOVED.
   (3) Remove the bolts (95), (77) and (85), the nuts (78), (79) and (97) and the bush (82).
   (4) Remove the FCOC and FDRV.
