Installation of the Thrust Reverser Right Hand Upper Actuator
This procedure gives the instructions to install the right hand upper actuator. The two upper actuators are also known as the Synchronized Locking Feedback Actuators (SLFA).
At the end of this procedure, you must synchronize the thrust reverser actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-820-801). You can do the synchronization together with some of the installation steps to save time.

Installation of the Thrust Reverser Right Hand Upper Actuator
WARNING:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.

1. Reason for the JobThis procedure gives the instructions to install the right hand upper actuator. The two upper actuators are also known as the Synchronized Locking Feedback Actuators (SLFA).
At the end of this procedure, you must synchronize the thrust reverser actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-820-801). You can do the synchronization together with some of the installation steps to save time.

A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
(b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
(c) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) are in position to tell persons not to operate:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).
Subtask 78-31-41-010-089-A (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.

B. Get Access
(1) Make sure that the fan cowl doors are open (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):

(2) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE is immediately forward of the right hand upper actuator under the fan cowl door.

(2) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE is immediately forward of the right hand upper actuator under the fan cowl door.
C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Nacelle Maintenance
Subtask 78-31-41-010-091-A WARNING:
YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
(1) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807). D. Get Access
(1) Make sure that the two upper actuators are unlocked (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-040-802).
(2) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the electrical tertiary lock (TLS) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-040-803).
(3) Make sure that the thrust reverser cowl doors must be open and the transcowl must be deployed between 25 mm (0.98 in.) and 51 mm (2.01 in.) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-010-801).
(4) Make sure the MAT - PROTECTIVE is in position under the actuator location.
Subtask 78-31-41-864-056-A (1) Make sure that the two upper actuators are unlocked (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-040-802).
(2) Make sure that you did the deactivation of the electrical tertiary lock (TLS) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-040-803).
(3) Make sure that the thrust reverser cowl doors must be open and the transcowl must be deployed between 25 mm (0.98 in.) and 51 mm (2.01 in.) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-010-801).
(4) Make sure the MAT - PROTECTIVE is in position under the actuator location.
E. Depressurization of the Aircraft Hydraulic Systems
(1) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to pressurize the applicable system.
(a) On the HYD/FUEL panel 40VU of the overhead panel
(b) On the ground service panel of the applicable hydraulic system.
(2) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)
(a) Make sure that the Green hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001).
(b) Make sure that the reservoir of the Green hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
(3) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)
(a) Make sure that the Yellow hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-002).
(b) Make sure that the reservoir of the Yellow hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
4. Procedure(1) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to pressurize the applicable system.
(a) On the HYD/FUEL panel 40VU of the overhead panel
(b) On the ground service panel of the applicable hydraulic system.
(2) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)
(a) Make sure that the Green hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001).
(b) Make sure that the reservoir of the Green hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
(3) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)
(a) Make sure that the Yellow hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-002).
(b) Make sure that the reservoir of the Yellow hydraulic system is depressurized (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
Subtask 78-31-41-420-073-A
A. Installation of the Thrust Reverser Right Hand Upper Actuator
(2) Do a mark on connection after tightening application (Ref. AMM TASK 20-23-22-910-001)
(3) Adjust the rod length of the right-hand upper actuator (actuator) (7) before you install it as follows:
(a) Refer to the record made during the removal to find the number of turns made to the Manual Drive Unit (MDU) to deploy the transcowl.
(b) Temporarily remove the MDU from one of the lower actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-000-801).
(c) Temporarily install the MDU onto one of the drive sockets in the actuator (7) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-400-801).
(d) Hold the rod end of the actuator (7) during the adjustment procedure. Do not let the rod end turn.
(e) Install the WRENCH - STANDARD in the square drive socket of the MDU (7).
(f) Turn the wrench the same number of turns as recorded at the start of the removal procedure. This will set the actuator rod end to the same position as the other actuators.
(g) Remove the MDU from the actuator, and install it back on the lower actuator from which it was temporarily removed (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-400-801).
(4) Lubricate the threads of the eight screws (1) and the four screws (23) with LUBRICATING OIL TURBINE ENGINE SYNT BASE (Material No.CPNCL00062) .
(5) Carefully lift the actuator (7) and move it in the aft direction, into position, through the forward frame of the thrust reverser.
(6) Align the aft end of the actuator with the fitting (17) on the translating cowl (3).
(a) Install the two gimbal pins (24) in the actuator (7).
(b) Install the four screws (23) and the two locking plates (22) that hold the two gimbal pins (24) in position on each side of the actuator (7).
(c) TORQUE the four screws (23) to between 0.52 and 0.38 m.daN (46.02 and 33.63 lbf.in )
.
(8) Connect the aft end of the actuator (7) to the translating cowl (3) as follows:
(a) Put the aft end of the actuator (7) in position on the fitting (17).
(b) Install the bushing (15), bolt (16), washer (19) and nut (18) to attach the aft end of the actuator (7) to the fitting (17).
(c) TORQUE the nut (18) to between 2.71 and 1.80 m.daN (19.99 and 13.27 lbf.ft )

(d) Installation of the cotter pin:
(e) Install the actuator access panel (2) on the translating cowl (3) with the eight screws (1).
(f) TORQUE the eight screws (1) to between 0.30 and 0.26 m.daN (26.55 and 23.01 lbf.in )
.
(9) Install the hydraulic tube (4) as follows:
(a) Put the hydraulic tube (4) in position between the actuator (7) and the support bracket (39).
(b) Install the nut (37) and the key washer (38) on the hydraulic connection (36).
(c) Put the hydraulic connection (36) through the opening in the support bracket (39).
(d) Install the key washer (32) and the nut (31) on the pylon hose (30).
(e) Attach the hydraulic connection (36) to the pylon hose (30).
(f) Connect the tube nut on the hydraulic tube (4) to the actuator (7).
(g) Put the P-clamp (34) around the hydraulic tube (4) and attach it to the support bracket with a bolt (33).
(h) TORQUE the two fitting nuts (31) and (37) to between 3.48 and 2.96 m.daN (25.66 and 21.83 lbf.ft )

(i) TRIPLE TORQUE the coupling nut at the lower end of the hydraulic tube (4) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
.
(j) TORQUE the bolt (33) at the P-clamp to between 0.43 and 0.36 m.daN (38.05 and 31.86 lbf.in )
.
(k) TRIPLE TORQUE the coupling nut at the end of the pylon hose (30) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
.
(10) Connect the hydraulic tubes to the actuator (7) as follows:
(a) Connect the sync shaft (9) in the sync tube (10) to the actuator (7).
(b) Extend the trombone fitting and connect the tube nut of the sync tube (10) to the actuator (7).
(c) Connect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (13) to the actuator (7).
(d) Connect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (11) to the actuator (7).
(e) Connect the upper flex shaft (6) in the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to the actuator (7).
(f) Connect the tube nut of the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to the actuator (7).
(11) Close the thrust reverser cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-410-806):

(12) Synchronize the actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-820-801).
(13) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (13) to between 3.16 and 2.43 m.daN (23.30 and 17.92 lbf.ft )

(14) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (11) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
.
(15) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (4) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
.
(16) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut on the sync tube (10) to between 11.92 and 9.66 m.daN (87.91 and 71.24 lbf.ft )
.
(17) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut on the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to between 11.92 and 9.66 m.daN (87.91 and 71.24 lbf.ft )
.
(18) Connect the three electrical connectors to the actuator as follow (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804):
(b) Connect the electrical connectors (12) and (14) to the proximity sensors.
5. Close-upNOTE: Each time TRIPLE TORQUE is required, perform as per (Ref. AMM TASK 70-24-00-910-814).
(1) Remove the CAP - PROTECTION from all open ports, tubes and hoses. (2) Do a mark on connection after tightening application (Ref. AMM TASK 20-23-22-910-001)
(3) Adjust the rod length of the right-hand upper actuator (actuator) (7) before you install it as follows:
(a) Refer to the record made during the removal to find the number of turns made to the Manual Drive Unit (MDU) to deploy the transcowl.
(b) Temporarily remove the MDU from one of the lower actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-000-801).
(c) Temporarily install the MDU onto one of the drive sockets in the actuator (7) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-400-801).
(d) Hold the rod end of the actuator (7) during the adjustment procedure. Do not let the rod end turn.
(e) Install the WRENCH - STANDARD in the square drive socket of the MDU (7).
(f) Turn the wrench the same number of turns as recorded at the start of the removal procedure. This will set the actuator rod end to the same position as the other actuators.
(g) Remove the MDU from the actuator, and install it back on the lower actuator from which it was temporarily removed (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-000-801) and (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-45-400-801).
(4) Lubricate the threads of the eight screws (1) and the four screws (23) with LUBRICATING OIL TURBINE ENGINE SYNT BASE (Material No.CPNCL00062) .
(5) Carefully lift the actuator (7) and move it in the aft direction, into position, through the forward frame of the thrust reverser.
(6) Align the aft end of the actuator with the fitting (17) on the translating cowl (3).
NOTE: Make sure that the actuator rod end does not turn during the installation procedure.
(7) Attach the actuator (7) to the torque box (25) as follows: (a) Install the two gimbal pins (24) in the actuator (7).
(b) Install the four screws (23) and the two locking plates (22) that hold the two gimbal pins (24) in position on each side of the actuator (7).
(c) TORQUE the four screws (23) to between 0.52 and 0.38 m.daN (46.02 and 33.63 lbf.in )
. (8) Connect the aft end of the actuator (7) to the translating cowl (3) as follows:
(a) Put the aft end of the actuator (7) in position on the fitting (17).
(b) Install the bushing (15), bolt (16), washer (19) and nut (18) to attach the aft end of the actuator (7) to the fitting (17).
(c) TORQUE the nut (18) to between 2.71 and 1.80 m.daN (19.99 and 13.27 lbf.ft )
. (d) Installation of the cotter pin:
WARNING:
USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
1 Install a new AIPC 78-30-24-10-605 COTTER PIN (20) in the nut (18) and bolt (16) at the aft end of the actuator (7). (e) Install the actuator access panel (2) on the translating cowl (3) with the eight screws (1).
(f) TORQUE the eight screws (1) to between 0.30 and 0.26 m.daN (26.55 and 23.01 lbf.in )
. (9) Install the hydraulic tube (4) as follows:
(a) Put the hydraulic tube (4) in position between the actuator (7) and the support bracket (39).
(b) Install the nut (37) and the key washer (38) on the hydraulic connection (36).
(c) Put the hydraulic connection (36) through the opening in the support bracket (39).
(d) Install the key washer (32) and the nut (31) on the pylon hose (30).
(e) Attach the hydraulic connection (36) to the pylon hose (30).
(f) Connect the tube nut on the hydraulic tube (4) to the actuator (7).
(g) Put the P-clamp (34) around the hydraulic tube (4) and attach it to the support bracket with a bolt (33).
(h) TORQUE the two fitting nuts (31) and (37) to between 3.48 and 2.96 m.daN (25.66 and 21.83 lbf.ft )
. (i) TRIPLE TORQUE the coupling nut at the lower end of the hydraulic tube (4) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
. (j) TORQUE the bolt (33) at the P-clamp to between 0.43 and 0.36 m.daN (38.05 and 31.86 lbf.in )
. (k) TRIPLE TORQUE the coupling nut at the end of the pylon hose (30) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
. (10) Connect the hydraulic tubes to the actuator (7) as follows:
(a) Connect the sync shaft (9) in the sync tube (10) to the actuator (7).
(b) Extend the trombone fitting and connect the tube nut of the sync tube (10) to the actuator (7).
(c) Connect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (13) to the actuator (7).
(d) Connect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (11) to the actuator (7).
(e) Connect the upper flex shaft (6) in the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to the actuator (7).
(f) Connect the tube nut of the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to the actuator (7).
(11) Close the thrust reverser cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-410-806):

(12) Synchronize the actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-820-801).
(13) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (13) to between 3.16 and 2.43 m.daN (23.30 and 17.92 lbf.ft )
. (14) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (11) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
. (15) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (4) to between 6.21 and 5.31 m.daN (45.80 and 39.16 lbf.ft )
. (16) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut on the sync tube (10) to between 11.92 and 9.66 m.daN (87.91 and 71.24 lbf.ft )
. (17) TRIPLE TORQUE the tube nut on the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) to between 11.92 and 9.66 m.daN (87.91 and 71.24 lbf.ft )
. (18) Connect the three electrical connectors to the actuator as follow (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804):
NOTE: If necessary, you can use the PLIERS - JAWED, SOFT to connect the electrical connectors.
(a) Connect the electrical connector (8) to the linear variable differential transducer (LVDT) on the actuator. (b) Connect the electrical connectors (12) and (14) to the proximity sensors.

A. Close Access
(1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
(2) Remove the MAT - PROTECTIVE.

(2) Remove the MAT - PROTECTIVE.
B. Close Access
(1) Manually stow the translating cowl (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-410-801).
(2) Lock the two upper actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-440-802).
(3) Do the activation of the electrical tertiary lock (TLS) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-440-803).
Subtask 78-31-41-440-070-A (1) Manually stow the translating cowl (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-410-801).
(2) Lock the two upper actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-440-802).
(3) Do the activation of the electrical tertiary lock (TLS) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-440-803).
