3. Job Set-up
Subtask 78-31-41-941-073-A
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) On the center pedestal, on ENG panel 115VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ENG/MODE selector switch is in the NORM position.
     (b) Make sure that the ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch was in the OFF position not less than five minutes before you do this procedure.
     (c) Put WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate:
  • The ENG/MODE selector switch
  • The ENG/MASTER 1(2) control switch.
   (2) On the ENG section of maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize FADEC 1(2).

B. Get Access
   (1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-803):
     (a) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

   (2) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE in position under the fan cowl door immediately forward of the right upper actuator.

C. Deactivation of the Thrust Reverser System for Nacelle Maintenance
WARNING: YOU MUST DEACTIVATE THE THRUST REVERSER BEFORE YOU DO WORK ON OR AROUND IT. IF YOU DO NOT, THE THRUST REVERSER CAN OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY AND CAUSE AN INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.
   (1) Do the deactivation of the thrust reverser system for nacelle maintenance (Ref. AMM TASK 78-30-00-040-807).

D. Get Access
   (1) Unlock the two upper actuators (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-41-040-802).
   (2) Do the deactivation of the electrical tertiary lock system (Ref. AMM TASK 78-37-00-040-803).
   (3) Count the turns at the Manual Drive Unit (MDU) on the lower actuator while you deploy the translating cowl as follows:
CAUTION: DO NOT DEPLOY THE TRANSLATING COWL MORE THAN 254 MM (10 INCHES). WHEN THE THRUST REVERSER IS OPEN, THE TRANSLATING COWL CAN HIT THE WING AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE THRUST REVERSER AND THE WING.
     (a) Manually deploy the translating cowl a minimum distance of 25 mm (0.98 in.) and a maximum distance of 51 mm (2.01 in.) (Ref. AMM TASK 78-32-50-010-801).
     (b) Make sure you count and keep a record of the total number of turns at the MDU on the lower actuator.

E. Depressurization of the Hydraulic System
   (1) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to pressurize the applicable system.
     (a) On the HYD/FUEL panel 40VU of the overhead panel
     (b) On the ground service panel of the applicable hydraulic system.
   (2) FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)
     (a) Depressurize the Green hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-001).
     (b) Depressurize the reservoir of the Green hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).
   (3) FOR [4020KM2] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 2)
     (a) Depressurize the Yellow hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-10-00-864-002).
     (b) Depressurize the reservoir of the Yellow hydraulic system (Ref. AMM TASK 29-14-00-614-001).

F. Draining of the Thrust Reverser Hydraulic Tubes
   (1) Drain the thrust reverser hydraulic tubes attached to the actuator (Ref. AMM TASK 78-31-49-680-801).
4. Procedure
WARNING: DO NOT GET HYDRAULIC FLUID ON YOUR SKIN, IN YOUR EYES OR IN YOUR MOUTH. HYDRAULIC FLUID IS POISONOUS AND CAN GO THROUGH YOUR SKIN AND INTO YOUR BODY. FLUSH HYDRAULIC FLUID FROM YOUR EYES, MOUTH OR SKIN WITH WATER. GET MEDICAL AID IF YOU GET HYDRAULIC FLUID IN YOUR EYES OR MOUTH.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET HYDRAULIC FLUID FALL ON THE ENGINE. UNWANTED HYDRAULIC FLUID MUST BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY WITH A CLEAN LINT FREE CLOTH. THE FLUID CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SURFACE PROTECTION AND TO SOME PARTS.
Subtask 78-31-41-020-067-A
A. Removal of the Thrust Reverser Right Hand Upper Actuator
   (1) Put the CAP - PROTECTION on all open ports, tubes and hoses.
   (2) Before draining, the Hydraulic Thrust-Reverser Actuation-System (HTRAS) was filled with hydraulic fluid.
   (3) Disconnect the electrical connectors from the right hand upper actuator (actuator) (7) as follows (Ref. AMM TASK 70-70-00-910-804):
NOTE: If necessary, you can use the PLIERS - JAWED, SOFT to disconnect the electrical connectors.
     (a) Disconnect the electrical connector (8) from the Linear-Variable Differential Transducer (LVDT) on the actuator.
     (b) Disconnect the electrical connectors (12) and (14) from the proximity sensors.
   (4) Disconnect the aft end of the actuator (7) from the fitting (17) on the translating cowl (3) as follows:
     (a) Remove the eight screws (1) and the actuator access panel (2) from the translating cowl (3).
     (b) Removal of the cotter pin:
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL A COTTER PIN. EACH TIME YOU REMOVE A COTTER PIN DURING THE TASK, DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. A LOOSE COTTER PIN CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND.
       1 Remove and discard the cotter pin (20) from the bolt (16) at the aft end of the actuator (7).
     (c) Remove the nut (18), washer (19), bolt (16) and bushing (15) from the aft end of the actuator (7).
     (d) Disconnect the aft end of the actuator (7) from the fitting (17) attached to the translating cowl (3).
   (5) Opening of the thrust reverser:
CAUTION: DO NOT OPEN THE THRUST REVERSER IF YOU CANNOT STOW THE TRANSLATING COWL, AND THE TRANSLATING COWL IS DEPLOYED MORE THAN 10 INCHES (254 MM). IF YOU DO, THE TRANSLATING COWL CAN HIT THE WING AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
     (a) Open the thrust reverser cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 78-36-00-010-806):
       1 FOR [4020KM1] (POWER PLANT-DEMOUNTABLE, ENGINE 1)

   (6) Disconnect the hydraulic tubes from the actuator (7) as follows:
     (a) Put the MAT - PROTECTIVE in position under the hydraulic connections on the actuator (7).
     (b) Disconnect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (11) from the actuator (7).
     (c) Disconnect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (13) from the actuator (7).
     (d) Loosen and disengage the tube nut of the sync tube (10) from the actuator (7).
     (e) Disengage the sync shaft (9) and the sync tube (10) from the actuator (7).
     (f) Loosen and disengage the tube nut of the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) from the actuator (7).
     (g) Disengage the upper flex shaft (6) and the over-the-top (upper) flex tube (5) from the actuator (7).
   (7) Remove the hydraulic tube (4) from the thrust reverser as follows:
     (a) Remove the fitting nut (31) and the key washer (32) from the pylon hose (30) and the support bracket (39).
     (b) Remove the bolt (33) that attaches the P-clamp (34) to the support bracket (35).
     (c) Disconnect the tube nut of the hydraulic tube (4) from the actuator (7).
     (d) Remove the fitting nut (37) and the key washer (38) from the hydraulic connection (36) on the hydraulic tube (4).
     (e) Remove the hydraulic tube (4) from the thrust reverser.
   (8) Disconnect the actuator (7) from the torque box (25) as follows:
     (a) Remove the four screws (23) and the two locking plates (22) that hold the two gimbal pins (24) in position on each side of the actuator (7).
     (b) Remove the two gimbal pins (24) from the actuator (7).
NOTE: You can install the EXTRACTOR - SCREW in a gimbal pin (24) to help remove it.
   (9) Carefully lift the actuator (7) and pull it in the forward direction to remove it from the thrust reverser.
NOTE: Do not let the actuator rod turn during the removal and installation procedure.
