A. Get Access to the Fuel Nozzle(s) that you must remove.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET AIRCRAFT FUEL IN YOUR MOUTH OR IN YOUR EYES. IF YOU GET FUEL ON YOUR SKIN OR ON YOUR CLOTHES, FLUSH IT IMMEDIATELY WITH WATER. IF NECESSARY, GET MEDICAL HELP. AIRCRAFT FUEL IS POISONOUS.
   (1) Determine the position number of the fuel nozzle(s) to be removed. The fuel nozzles are given position numbers in a clockwise (CW) sequence when you look at them from the aft of the engine. Position number 1 is at 12 o'clock.

Pre SB CFM56-5B 72-181
NOTE: There are two types of fuel nozzles. Nozzles in positions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 are bleed fuel nozzles. Nozzles in positions 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 are cooling fuel nozzles. The same type of fuel nozzle must be installed in each position during replacement.
Post SB CFM56-5B 72-181
NOTE: There are two types of fuel nozzles. Nozzles in positions 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17 and 18 are bleed fuel nozzles. Nozzles in positions 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19 and 20 are cooling fuel nozzles. The same type of fuel nozzle must be installed in each position during replacement.
End of SB CFM56-5B 72-181
NOTE: At some positions, you must remove some external engine hardware to get access to the fuel nozzle(s) to be removed.
NOTE: At some positions, drain manifold support brackets or engine plumbing support brackets are installed with the fuel nozzle. It is necessary to remove these brackets for removal of the fuel nozzle. Identify the bolts and brackets by position number and keep the bolts and the brackets for each nozzle position together to ease the installation of the fuel nozzle.
   (2) Cut and remove the lockwire from the bolts (10, 50) that attach the fuel nozzle(s) to be removed to the combustion case.
   (3) Apply a small amount of liquid wrench (Material No.CP2162) to the bolts (10), (50) that attach the fuel nozzle(s) to be removed to the combustion case. Permit the Liquid Wrench to soak for approximately 5 minutes.
   (4) Put a CONTAINER 1 L (1/4 USGAL) below the fuel nozzle(s) to be removed to catch any fuel leakage.

B. Removal of the Fuel Nozzle.
Pre SB CFM56-5B 72-181
   (1) Disconnect the drain tubes from the top of each fuel nozzle drain shroud and from the drain manifold.
NOTE: In some locations, the nozzle drain tubes are a one-piece assembly serving both inlets. In other locations, each inlet is served by an individual drain tube.
   (2) Remove and discard the O-ring (160) from where each end of the drain tube connects to the shroud.

Post SB CFM56-5B 72-181
   (3) Cut and remove the lockwire from the fuel manifold coupling shroud (the shroud that covers the coupling nut, referred to in this procedure as the coupling shroud).

End of SB CFM56-5B 72-181
   (4) Move the coupling shroud rearward.
CAUTION: DO NOT MOVE THE COUPLING SHROUD REARWARD TOO FAR TO GET ACCESS TO THE COUPLING NUT OF THE FUEL SUPPLY LINE. THIS CAN PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE COUPLING SHROUD.
     (a) Turn the coupling shroud counterclockwise 90 degrees and move it rearward until you can get access to the coupling nut of the fuel supply line. Do this at both fuel nozzle inlets.
   (5) Cut and remove the lockwire on the fuel supply tube coupling nut from both inlets . Disconnect the fuel supply tube coupling nut from both of the fuel nozzle inlets
   (6) Remove and discard the O-ring (140) from both of the fuel supply tubes.
   (7) Remove and discard the O-ring (150) from both of the fuel nozzle inlets.
   (8) If a manifold support bracket is installed on the fuel nozzle, remove the bolts (10) that attach the manifold support bracket (20) to the nozzle.
   (9) Remove the bolts (50) that attach the fuel nozzle to the combustion case.
   (10) Move the fuel nozzle forward to disengage the tip of the nozzle from the combustor inner and outer ferrules.
   (11) Turn the nozzle clockwise while you move the top of the nozzle towards the combustion case.
   (12) Remove the fuel nozzle and note the position number.
   (13) Remove the seal ring assembly from between the nozzle and the combustion case.
   (14) Inspect the seal ring assembly and any other gaskets or seals removed for damage (Ref. AMM TASK 70-21-00-918-002).
   (15) Keep the seal ring assembly and other gaskets or seals if there is no damage. Discard the seals and gaskets that are damaged.
   (16) Install COVER - PROTECTION on the fuel nozzle, the combustion case pads, and fuel lines.
   (17) Make a record of the part number, serial number and the position of the nozzles that you removed.
