Adjustment of the Fan Cowl Doors
1. Reason for the Job
The fan cowls must be adjusted each time the air intake cowl, the fan cowl, the thrust reverser, the engine, or the fan cowl door latches are replaced.
NOTE: VSB RA32071-163 (equivalent to Airbus service bulletin SB 71-1068)
Introduction of a lockable latch in the forward position (position 1 FWD latch) that must be opened and closed and locked with a key and flag assembly. The key and flag assembly are stowed in the cockpit and must not be used if there is damage to the key or flag.

Subtask 71-13-00-941-061-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
4. Procedure(1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU:
(a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to start the engine.
(2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
(3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
(a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
(b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
Subtask 71-13-00-820-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Measure the distance between the fan cowl doors.
(1) Measure the distance between the fan cowl doors along their full length (from leading to trailing edges) with the doors closed. If the distance is not between 0.040 and 0.160 in. (1.0 and 4.0 mm) for at least 80 percent of the length, and between 0.040 and 0.236 in. (1.0 and 6.0 mm) for the remainder of the length, adjust the fan cowl doors.
Subtask 71-13-00-010-062-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Measure the distance between the fan cowl doors along their full length (from leading to trailing edges) with the doors closed. If the distance is not between 0.040 and 0.160 in. (1.0 and 4.0 mm) for at least 80 percent of the length, and between 0.040 and 0.236 in. (1.0 and 6.0 mm) for the remainder of the length, adjust the fan cowl doors.
NOTE: A distance of 0.236 in. (6.0 mm) is permitted between the fan cowl doors aft of the rear latch.

USE YOUR HANDS TO OPERATE THE FAN COWL LATCHES. IF YOU USE SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM YOUR HANDS TO OPERATE THE LATCHES, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LATCHES.
(1) Open the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-010-040): (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

C. Removal of Components
(a) Remove the nuts (5) and (45), the washers (10) and (40), the shims (15) and (17), the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), the shear pins (30) and the latch bracket (50) from the left fan cowl.
(2) At the No. 2 (center) and No. 3 (aft) latch:
(a) Remove the nuts (5) and (45), the washer (10) and (40), the shims (15) and (17),the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), and the shear pins (30) from the left fan cowl.
Subtask 71-13-00-020-053-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL CAUTION:
DO NOT TURN THE CLEVISES. IF YOU TURN THE CLEVISES, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE HOUSING GUIDE. IF THE GUIDE IS DAMAGED, THE CLEVIS CAN TURN. IF THE CLEVIS CAN TURN, THE CLEVIS CAN NOT ENGAGE CORRECTLY WITH THE LATCH AND CAN KEEP THE LATCH FROM CLOSING CORRECTLY. IF THE LATCHES ARE NOT CLOSED CORRECTLY, THE FAN COWLS CAN OPEN IN FLIGHT.
(1) At the No. 1 (forward) latch: (a) Remove the nuts (5) and (45), the washers (10) and (40), the shims (15) and (17), the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), the shear pins (30) and the latch bracket (50) from the left fan cowl.
(2) At the No. 2 (center) and No. 3 (aft) latch:
(a) Remove the nuts (5) and (45), the washer (10) and (40), the shims (15) and (17),the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), and the shear pins (30) from the left fan cowl.
D. Installation of the Components
(1) At the No. 1 (forward) latch:
(a) Install the nuts (5) and (45), the washers (10) and (40), the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), and the shear pin (30) and the latch bracket (50).
(b) Do not install the shims (15) and (17).
(c) TORQUE the nuts (5) and (45) to between 70 and 50 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.57 m.daN )

(2) At the No. 2 (center) and No. 3 (aft) latch:
(a) Install the nuts (5) and (45), the washers (10) and (40), the retainers (20) and (35), the bolts (25), and the shear pin (30).
(b) Do not install the shims (15) and (17).
(c) TORQUE the nuts (5) and (45) to between 70 and 50 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.57 m.daN )

. E. Close the Fan Cowl Doors
(2) With no shims (15) and (17) installed, close the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-410-040).

Subtask 71-13-00-820-065-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL CAUTION:
USE YOUR HANDS TO OPERATE THE FAN COWL LATCHES. IF YOU USE SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM YOUR HANDS TO OPERATE THE LATCHES, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE LATCHES.
(1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tool(s) and other items. (2) With no shims (15) and (17) installed, close the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-410-040).

F. Adjustment of the Fan Cowl Doors
(1) Adjust the fan cowl door latches one at a time.
(a) Turn the nut in the keeper assembly, on the right fan cowl, with a 5/32 in. (4 mm) hex wrench.
(b) Each 45 deg. turn of the nut will cause the clevis to extend or retract 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).
(c) Adjust the latches so that a force of 15 lbf (6.67 daN) to 20 lbf (8.90 daN) is required to close the latch.
(d) Measure the force required to close the latch. Put the push-pull gage at the end of the latch handle to measure the force.
(2) Measure the distance between the retainer (20) and the adjusta-keeper housing at each latch.
(3) Measure the distance between the retainer (35) and the adjusta-keeper housing at each latch.
(4) Make a note of the 6 measurements, two at each latch.
Subtask 71-13-00-010-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Adjust the fan cowl door latches one at a time.
(a) Turn the nut in the keeper assembly, on the right fan cowl, with a 5/32 in. (4 mm) hex wrench.
(b) Each 45 deg. turn of the nut will cause the clevis to extend or retract 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).
(c) Adjust the latches so that a force of 15 lbf (6.67 daN) to 20 lbf (8.90 daN) is required to close the latch.
(d) Measure the force required to close the latch. Put the push-pull gage at the end of the latch handle to measure the force.
(2) Measure the distance between the retainer (20) and the adjusta-keeper housing at each latch.
(3) Measure the distance between the retainer (35) and the adjusta-keeper housing at each latch.
(4) Make a note of the 6 measurements, two at each latch.
NOTE: The distance between the doors may get smaller from the front to the rear if the distance is within the specified range.

H. Install the new AIPC 71-13-13-01-150 SHIMS (15) and the new AIPC 71-13-13-01-170 SHIMS (17) on each latch.
(1) Remove the laminations from the new shims (15) and (17), as required to get the distance measurement for each latch that was recorded in step F.(4).
(2) At the No. 1 (forward) latch:
(a) Attach the shims (15) and (17) and the retainers (20) and (35) with the bolts (25), the shear pin (30), the nuts (5) and (45), the washers (10) and (40) and the latch bracket (50).
(b) TORQUE the nuts (5) and (45) to between 70 and 50 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.57 m.daN )
(3) At the No. 2 (center) and No. 3 (aft) latch:
(a) Attach the shims (15) and the retainers (20) and (35) with the bolts (25), the shear pin (30), the nuts (5) and (45) and the washers (10) and (40).
(b) TORQUE the nuts (5) and (45) to between 70 and 50 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.57 m.daN )

Subtask 71-13-00-410-065-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Remove the laminations from the new shims (15) and (17), as required to get the distance measurement for each latch that was recorded in step F.(4).

(b) TORQUE the nuts (5) and (45) to between 70 and 50 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.57 m.daN )

J. Adjustment of the Latch Tension of the Fan Cowl Door
(2) Adjust the forward fan cowl latch, as follows:
(a) Turn the nut in the keeper assembly, on the right fan cowl, with a ALLEN KEY 5/32 IN (4 mm).
(b) Each 45 deg. turn of the nut will cause the clevis to extend or retract 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).
(c) Adjust the forward latches so that a force between 30 lb (13.6 kg) and 40 lb (18.1 kg) is required to close the latch.
(e) Make sure that the shim retainers (20) and (35) fully touch the keeper housing.
(3) Adjust the center and aft fan cowl door latches as follows:
(a) Do step 4.K.(2) again for the center and aft fan cowl door latches.
Subtask 71-13-00-820-068-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL NOTE: The permitted in-service latch handle force limit is 30 lb (13.6 kg) to 40 lb (18.1 kg).
(1) Open the forward latch. Make sure that the other latches are engaged. (2) Adjust the forward fan cowl latch, as follows:
(a) Turn the nut in the keeper assembly, on the right fan cowl, with a ALLEN KEY 5/32 IN (4 mm).
(b) Each 45 deg. turn of the nut will cause the clevis to extend or retract 0.005 in. (0.127 mm).
(c) Adjust the forward latches so that a force between 30 lb (13.6 kg) and 40 lb (18.1 kg) is required to close the latch.
NOTE: When you adjust a latch, make sure the other two latches are engaged.
(d) Measure the force required to close the latch. Put the GAGE - PUSH-PULL at the end of the latch handle to measure the force. (e) Make sure that the shim retainers (20) and (35) fully touch the keeper housing.
(3) Adjust the center and aft fan cowl door latches as follows:
(a) Do step 4.K.(2) again for the center and aft fan cowl door latches.
K. Measure the Step Mismatch of the Fan Cowl Doors as Follows:
(1) Measure the step mismatch between the left and right fan cowl doors with the doors closed.
(2) If the maximum step mismatch is not 0.08 in. (2,03 mm) or less for 80% or more of the length of the fan cowl doors, and 0.120 in. (3.0 mm) or less for the remaining length of the fan cowl doors, contact Goodrich for analysis.
Subtask 71-13-00-210-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL (1) Measure the step mismatch between the left and right fan cowl doors with the doors closed.
(2) If the maximum step mismatch is not 0.08 in. (2,03 mm) or less for 80% or more of the length of the fan cowl doors, and 0.120 in. (3.0 mm) or less for the remaining length of the fan cowl doors, contact Goodrich for analysis.
L. Do a detailed visual inspection of the fan cowl doors to check for mismatch at the air intake cowl (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-11-210-040).
