Installation of the Air Intake Cowl


WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL DURING THE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION OF THE AIR INTAKE COWL. IT WEIGHS 310 Lb (140.6 kg). IF IT FALLS, IT CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: ADJUST THE FAN COWL DOORS WHEN A NEW AIR INTAKE COWL IS INSTALLED. IF THE FAN COWL DOORS ARE NOT CORRECTLY ADJUSTED THE DOORS CAN OPEN IN FLIGHT.
CAUTION: THIS PART IS A REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENT (RSC), WHICH CAN BE MOVED BETWEEN AIRCRAFT. THUS IT CAN HAVE DIFFERENT OPERATION CONDITIONS AND A DIFFERENT LIFE RECORD (FLIGHT HOURS/FLIGHT CYCLES/CALENDAR) FROM THE AIRCRAFT IT IS INSTALLED ON OR REMOVED FROM. THE OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SPECIFIC TRACKING AND CONTINUED AIRWORTHINESS OF REMOVABLE STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS. INCORRECT MAINTENANCE OF THESE COMPONENTS CAN CAUSE A RISK FOR THE FLIGHT SAFETY.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 71-11-00-860-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) On the center pedestal, on the ENG panel 115VU, make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU, make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off. Make sure that a WARNING NOTICE(S) is in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).
   (3) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 1M(3 FT) is in position.

4. Procedure
Subtask 71-11-00-110-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Clean the Temporary Protective Colored Coating from the Nose Lip.
NOTE: Do this procedure before you install a new or spare inlet cowl.
   (1) Use 2 in. (50.8mm) wide max. tape (Material No.CP2306) around the circumferences of the leading edges of the inner and outer barrel panels to prevent solvent from discoloring panels.
   (2) Prior to installation of the inlet cowl, clean the temporary protective coating off of the nose lip. Use a clean cotton cloth, made moist with acetone (Material No.CP1039) or isopropyl alcohol (Material No.CP1041) or stoddard solvent (Material No.CP2011) or ardrox 552 (Material No.CP2559) or turco ind 79 (Material No.CP2560) or mag-chem teksol (Material No.CP2566) or degreasol 99 R (Material No.CP2584) or mag-chem skysol (Material No.CP2656) SPM 702112
   (3) Wipe off unwanted acetone before it dries.
   (4) Make sure that all of the protective coating has been removed. If not, do again this procedure until the coating is gone.

B. Remove filler plugs from the hoist points on the air intake cowl.

C. Installation of the Tooling
   (1) Install the PAD - UNIVERSAL ATTACH (20) in the hoist points of the air intake cowl (25).
   (2) Attach the RSE1112 SLING INLET COWL (15) to the universal attach pads (20).
   (3) Lift the sling until it supports the air intake cowl (25).

D. Disengagement of the Air Intake Cowl
   (1) Remove the bolts (50), the washers (5) and (55), spacers (60), and the nuts (10), that attach the air intake cowl (25) to the dolly.
NOTE: Remove the top bolt and work down equally on each side when you remove the bolts.
   (2) Pull the air intake cowl (25) forward to disengage the index pin from the rotating ring on the dolly.

E. Installation of the Air Intake Cowl
   (1) Lift the air intake cowl (25) until the attach ring is aligned with the engine and engage the index pin with the engine flange.
   (2) Attach the air intake cowl (25) to the engine flange with the bolts (50), the washers (5) and (55), the spacers (60) and the nuts (10) in 36 places:
     (a) Install the bolts (50) thru the engine flange with the bolt head facing aft.
     (b) Make sure that the countersunk side of the washers (55) is against the bolt (50) head.
   (3) Torque the nuts (10) as follows:
     (a) TORQUE the nuts (10) to between 360 and 340 lbf.in (4.07 and 3.84 m.daN ) T.
Start with the nuts (10) at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions, then torque the nuts (10) in the sequence as shown in the figure:

     (b) TORQUE the nuts (10) again in the same sequence.

F. Remove the sling (15) and the universal attach pads (20) from the air intake cowl (25).

G. Installation of the Hardware
   (1) Install the insert bolt(s) in the inlet cowl hoist point(s).
   (2) TORQUE the insert bolt(s) to between 70 and 60 lbf.in (0.79 and 0.68 m.daN ) T.
   (3) Remove the protective covers from the ECU, the ECU cooling duct, the swirl nozzle duct assembly, and the electrical connector.
   (4) Install the preformed hose (35) and the clamps (30) on the ECU and the ECU cooling duct.
   (5) Install anti-ice valve (40) (
Ref. AMM TASK 30-21-51-400-042).
   (6) Connect the electrical connector (4001VC-A) (45) for the interphone jack to the receptacle on the fan case. Tighten the connector with your hand.

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Close the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-410-040):
     (a) FOR [1000EM1] (ENGINE-1)

   (3) Remove the access platform(s).
   (4) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).

B. Do the adjustment of the fan cowl doors (Ref. AMM TASK 71-13-00-800-041).
