Adjustment of the Balance Mechanism

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION: IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOU OPEN THE CARGO COMPARTMENT DOOR, RECORD ON THE WORK CARD ON THE DOOR, THE DATE AND TIME WHEN YOU OPENED IT. IF THE CARGO COMPARTMENT DOOR STAYS OPEN FOR 12 HOURS OR MORE, YOU MUST BLEED THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM RELATED TO IT. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE PRECAUTIONS, THE DOOR CAN CLOSE SUDDENLY WHEN YOU SET THE DOOR TO "CLOSE". THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE DOOR AND TO THE AIRCRAFT STRUCTURE.

A. Get Access
   (1) Open the AFT cargo-compartment door (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-001) to get access to the inner side of the closed Bulk door.
   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in position for the AFT cargo-compartment door and the Bulk door.
   (3) Remove the divider net between the AFT/Bulk cargo compartment at FR59.
   (4) Remove the door net from the opening of the Bulk door.
   (5) Remove the protection lining and insulation packs (Ref. AMM TASK 52-33-13-000-001) to get access to the components of the balance mechanism.
4. Procedure
Subtask 52-33-11-820-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Adjustment of the Balance Mechanism
   (1) Release the pre-tension of the balance mechanism as follows:
     (a) Install the LOCALLY MANUFACTURED - SHIM PLATE (adjustment gage) between the forward lever (52) and the stop fitting (53) of the Bulk door structure.
NOTE: The thickness of the shim plate must be between 17.7 mm (0.6969 in.) and 18.3 mm (0.7205 in.).
     (b) Carefully open the Bulk door (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-006).
     (c) Disconnect the connection rod (50) from the fuselage fitting (44) as follows:
1 Remove and discard the cotter pin (41) from the nut (42).
2 Remove the nut (42), the washers (43) and the bolt (45).
3 Remove the eye-end (46) of the connection rod (50) from the fuselage fitting (44).
     (d) Carefully close the Bulk door (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-008).
   (2) Adjust the torsion spring (51) to increase the tension of the balance mechanism as follows:
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
     (a) Cut and remove the lockwire from the screw (56) and the clamping screw (55) of the pre-load unit.
CAUTION: -YOU MUST NOT INCREASE THE TIGHTENING TORQUE MORE THAN THE MAXIMUM VALUE.
  • APPLY ALL TIGHTENING TORQUES WITH A TORQUE WRENCH OR A CALIBRATED SCREWDRIVER.
     (b) Tighten the clamping screw (55) and then loosen it two turns to set the tension of the torsion spring (51).
NOTE: It is important to not overtorque the clamping screw (55). The max. permitted torque value is 1.4 m.daN (10.32 lbf.ft).
     (c) Do not safety the clamping screw (55) at this time with lockwire.
   (3) Attach the connection rod (50) to the fuselage as follows:
     (a) Carefully open the Bulk door (Ref. AMM TASK 52-30-00-860-006).
     (b) Adjust the length of the connection rod (50) as follows:
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
1 Cut and remove the lockwire from the jam nuts (47) and the safety rings (48).
2 Loosen the jam nuts (47) to adjust the length of the connection rod (50).
3 Put the eye-end (46) on the fuselage fitting (44).
4 Turn the turnbuckle (49) until the holes of the eye-end (46) and the fuselage fitting (44) are aligned.
5 Look through the inspection hole of the turnbuckle (49). Make sure that you can see the lower, threaded ends of the eye-end (46) and the connection rod (50).
6 Tighten the jam nuts (47) to safety the turnbuckle (49). Do not safety the jam nuts (47) at this time with lockwire.
     (c) Install the bolt (45), the washers (43) and the nut (42). Tighten the nut (42) with your hand.
Subtask 52-33-11-720-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Functional Test
   (1) Do this test to make sure that the balance mechanism is satisfactory.
ACTION
RESULT
1.Set the door handle in the OPEN position to release the hook from the hook arrester.
The Bulk door must stay in the fully open position and not start to close by its own weight.
2.Pull the Bulk door down and stop in different positions.
The Bulk door must stay in each position.
3.Measure the force necessary to close the Bulk door.
The force must be less than 5.0 daN (11.2404 lbf).
4.Pull the Bulk door fully down in the opening and release it.
The Bulk door must stay in the fully closed position and not open suddenly by itself.
5.Push the Bulk door inwards and stop in different positions.
The Bulk door must stay in each open position.
6.Measure the force necessary to open the Bulk door.
The force must be less than 5.0 daN (11.2404 lbf).
   (2) If the Bulk door moves by itself during this test, continue as follows:
     (a) Make sure that the insulation packs are not soaked with the condense water.
     (b) Make sure that the drain holes of the Bulk door structure are free and not blocked with unwanted objects.
     (c) Adjust the tension of the balance mechanism again (refer to para. 4.A.(2)).
NOTE: Make sure that the connection rod (50) is disconnected during the adjustment and the clamping screw (55) must not be overtorqued.
Subtask 52-33-11-420-058-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
C. Final Installation
   (1) Safety the clamping screw (55) with lockwire, 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -.
   (2) Safety the jam nuts (47) with lockwire, 14QFB1Wire-Locking Dia: 0.8 mm CRES Nickel Alloy -, on the safety rings (48).
   (3) Safety the nut (42) with new AIPC 52-33-04-01-070 COTTER PIN (41) or AIPC 52-33-84-01-070 COTTER PIN (41).
5. Close-up
