1. Reason for the Job
To do the braking and steering functional test.
NOTE: You must not do this procedure if the Main Landing Gear (MLG) wheels and brakes are removed.
NOTE: It is necessary to have the Green hydraulic system available. If a hydraulic ground cart is not available, it is necessary to pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system with the Yellow electric pump. Then, you must pressurize the Green hydraulic system with the Power Transfer Unit (PTU).

A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Put the SAFETY BARRIER(S) in position around the landing gear.
   (2) If you do the test with the nose wheels on the ground, do the steps that follow:
     (a) Put a PLATE 1.2 M (4 FT) - STEEL, SQUARED in front of the nose wheels.
     (b) Apply a thick layer of Synthetic Ester base Grease-General Purpose Low Temp - (Material No.03HBD9) or Synthetic Oil base Grease-General Purpose Clay Thickened - (Material No.03GBB1) to the top surface of the steel plate.
NOTE: Do not mix COMMON GREASES (Material No. 03HBD9) with COMMON GREASES (Material No. 03GBB1). You can use COMMON GREASES (Material No. 03GBB1) as an alternative to COMMON GREASES (Material No. 03HBD9). Clean and degrease the parts before you use COMMON GREASES (Material No. 03GBB1).
       1 Put the other PLATE 1.2 M (4 FT) - STEEL, SQUARED on the top of the steel plate where you applied greased.
       2 Move the aircraft and position the nose wheels on the steel plates (Ref. AMM TASK 09-10-00-584-002).
   (3) To do the test with the nose wheels off the ground, do the step that follows:
     (a) Lift the nose wheels (Ref. AMM TASK 07-12-00-582-001).
NOTE: You must use a compact axle jack to lift the nose wheels.
   (4) In the cockpit, on the right center instrument-panel 400VU:
     (a) Make sure that the landing-gear normal control-lever 6GA is in the DOWN position.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the landing-gear normal control-lever.
   (5) In the cockpit, on the center pedestal, make sure that the free-fall control handle is in the normal position.
   (6) On the steering handwheels (CAPT and F/O) and on the brake pedals:
  • Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate them.
   (7) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the NLG and MLG (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-001).
   (8) Make sure that the safety devices are installed on the NLG and MLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-002).

B. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Do the EIS start procedure (upper ECAM DU and lower ECAM DU only)
(Ref. AMM TASK 31-60-00-860-001).
   (2) On the nose gear leg, on the nose-wheel-steering deactivation electrical-box, make sure that the towing lever is not in the towing position.
   (3) On the parking brake control-panel 110VU, put the PARK BRK control switch in the OFF position.
   (4) On the landing gear control-panel 402VU, make sure that the A/SKID & N/W STRG switch is in the ON position.
   (5) On the ECAM control panel, push the WHEEL pushbutton switch (on the lower ECAM DU, the WHEEL page comes into view).
   (6) Make sure that the rudder pedals and the two nose-wheel steering handwheels (CAPT and F/O) are in the neutral position.
   (7) On the overhead panel 23VU, make sure that:
  • The FLT CTL/ELAC1 pushbutton switch is pushed (FAULT and OFF legends off).
   (8) On the overhead panel 24VU, make sure that:
  • The FLT CTL/ELAC2 pushbutton switch is pushed (FAULT and OFF legends off).
   (9) Make sure that the ADIRS are stopped (Ref. AMM TASK 34-10-00-860-005).

Subtask 32-46-00-710-051-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Operational Check to Start the Normal Braking System and Functional Test of the Nose-Wheel Steering System
CAUTION: DO NOT CONNECT GROUND POWER SUPPLIES TO THE GREEN AND YELLOW HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS AT THE SAME TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE:
  • THE PTU TO OPERATE TOO FAST
  • DAMAGE TO THE PTU IF ONE GROUND POWER SUPPLY IS IN OPERATION AND THE OTHER IS IN THE BY-PASS MODE.
CAUTION: DO NOT OPERATE THE ELECTRIC PUMP OR THE PTU IF THE SUPPLY OF HYDRAULIC FLUID IS NOT SUFFICIENT. MAKE SURE THAT THE RESERVOIRS HAVE SUFFICIENT AIR PRESSURE BEFORE YOU OPERATE THE PUMP/PTU.
   (1) Install a 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE on the weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors:
  • On the left MLG, 21GA and 23GA
  • On the right MLG, 20GA and 22GA.
   (2) Install a 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE on the NLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 24GA and 25GA.
   (3) Pressurize the Green hydraulic system:
NOTE: It is necessary to have the Green hydraulic system available. If a hydraulic ground cart is not available, it is necessary to pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system with the Yellow electric pump. Then, you must pressurize the Green hydraulic system with the PTU.
NOTE: If a hydraulic ground cart is available, pressurize the Green hydraulic system directly.
   (4) Remove the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE from the NLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 24GA and 25GA.
   (5) Remove the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE from the left MLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 21GA and 23GA.
   (6) Remove the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE from the right MLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 20GA and 22GA.
   (7) Make sure that the Green hydraulic-system pistons on the brake units extend and then retract on the MLG, and that the nose landing gear moves.

B. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) Depressurize the Green hydraulic system.
NOTE: If you pressurized the Green hydraulic system from the Yellow hydraulic system, through the PTU, it is necessary to depressurize the Green and Yellow hydraulic systems.

C. Operational Check to Start the Normal and Alternate Braking Systems and Functional Test of the Nose-Wheel Steering System
CAUTION: DO NOT CONNECT GROUND POWER SUPPLIES TO THE GREEN AND YELLOW HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS AT THE SAME TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE:
  • THE PTU TO OPERATE TOO FAST
  • DAMAGE TO THE PTU IF ONE GROUND POWER SUPPLY IS IN OPERATION AND THE OTHER IS IN THE BY-PASS MODE.
CAUTION: DO NOT OPERATE THE ELECTRIC PUMP OR THE PTU IF THE SUPPLY OF HYDRAULIC FLUID IS NOT SUFFICIENT. MAKE SURE THAT THE RESERVOIRS HAVE SUFFICIENT AIR PRESSURE BEFORE YOU OPERATE THE PUMP/PTU.
   (1) Install the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE on the weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors:
  • On the left MLG, 21GA and 23GA
  • On the right MLG, 20GA and 22GA.
   (2) Install the 98D32603000000 SIMULATION PLATE-FLIGHT GROUND on the NLG downlock proximity-sensors 18GA and 19GA.
   (3) Pressurize the Green hydraulic system:
NOTE: It is necessary to have the Green hydraulic system available. If a hydraulic ground cart is not available, it is necessary to pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system with the Yellow electric pump. Then, you must pressurize the Green hydraulic system with the PTU.
NOTE: If a hydraulic ground cart is available, pressurize the Green hydraulic system directly.
   (4) Pressurize the Yellow hydraulic system with the electric pump (Ref. AMM TASK 29-24-00-863-001).
WARNING: WHEN YOU REMOVE THE SIMULATION PLATES FROM THE NLG DOWNLOCK PROXIMITY-SENSORS, MOVE QUICKLY AWAY FROM THE NLG ZONE. THE NLG WILL START TO OPERATE 20 SECONDS AFTER YOU REMOVE THE SIMULATION PLATES AND CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL.
   (5) Remove the 98D32603000000 SIMULATION PLATE-FLIGHT GROUND from the NLG downlock proximity-sensors 18GA and 19GA.
   (6) Wait for one minute.
   (7) Make sure that:
  • The Green and Yellow hydraulic-system pistons on the brake units extend and then retract on the MLG.
  • The NLG moves.
   (8) Remove the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE from the left MLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 21GA and 23GA.
   (9) Remove the 98F32304000000 TARGET-FALSE from the right MLG weight-on-wheels proximity-sensors 20GA and 22GA.

F. Test
   (1) Do a check of the ground report.
NOTE: The Braking and Steering Control Unit (BSCU) will store the fault messages in the last leg report only (when it receives the transition NULL->DC2->DC1 from the Centralized Fault Display Interface Unit (CFDIU)).
     (a) Get access to the SYSTEM REPORT/TEST/L/G page (Ref. AMM TASK 31-32-00-860-009) for BSCU1 and BSCU2.

  • Push the line key adjacent to the BSCU1 or BSCU2 indication.
  • The BSCU1 or BSCU2 page comes into view.
  • Push the line key adjacent to the Idem indication.
  • The Idem page comes into view.
   (2) If the ground report give(s) the class-1 and/or class-3 maintenance message(s):
  • Do the related troubleshooting procedure.
   (3) Do the BITE test of the BSCU (Ref. AMM TASK 32-46-00-740-001).
5. Close-up

A. Put the aircraft back to its initial configuration.
   (1) On the MCDU, push the line select key adjacent to the RETURN indication until the CFDS menu page comes into view.
   (2) Put the aircraft back to the ground configuration (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-860-002).
   (3) De-energize the aircraft electrical circuits (Ref. AMM TASK 24-41-00-862-002).
   (4) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
   (5) Remove the safety barriers.
