Inspection/Check of the Brake with the Wheel Removed

TASK 32-42-27-210-006-A
Inspection/Check of the Brake with the Wheel Removed

WARNING: LET THE BRAKES AND THE WHEELS BECOME COOL BEFORE YOU GO NEAR THE LANDING GEAR. DO NOT APPLY A LIQUID OR GAS DIRECTLY ON A HOT WHEEL OR BRAKE UNIT. THIS CAN CAUSE A TIRE EXPLOSION AND/OR A WHEEL RIM BURST.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.

Subtask 32-42-27-941-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Make sure that the wheel-chocks are in position.
   (2) Set the parking brake to the OFF position.
Subtask 32-42-27-860-063-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
   (1) If it is not already done, remove the wheel of the brake that you must examine (Ref. AMM TASK 32-41-11-000-006).
4. Procedure
Subtask 32-42-27-210-061-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Visual Inspection of the Brake
F Brake Disk Failure Reporting ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
NOTE: If there is no brake damage, it is not necessary to record the data in the brake-disk failure reporting-sheet.
   (1) When you do a visual inspection of the brake, if you find brake damage:
  • Record the data in the brake-disk failure reporting-sheet to help Airbus continuous monitoring.
   (2) Make sure that there are no leaks of hydraulic fluid on the pistons, the hydraulic lines and the self-sealing couplings.
   (3) Examine the wear indicators. If the end of one of the two wear indicators is flush with the machined surface of the piston housing (heat pack fully worn), replace the brake before the next flight (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-400-001).
   (4) Make sure that the heat pack is in the correct condition and that there is no hydraulic fluid contamination of the carbon parts.
     (a) Make sure that the disks can move easily on the torque tube.
     (b) Examine the carbon disks and make sure that:
  • There is no structural damage on the outer edge.
  • There are no cracks.
  • The rotor can move freely around the torque tube.
  • The stator cannot move freely around the torque tube.
  • Make sure that the disks do not show signs of oxidation.
     (c) Examine the rotors slots and make sure that:
  • There is no cracking of the slots inserts.
  • There is no missing insert.

NOTE: Cracks are permitted on the retainer clip if the slot insert is held in position.
     (d) Make sure that there are no cracks or signs of too much heat on the visible part of the torque tube.
     (e) Make sure that the probe of the temperature sensor does not move freely.
     (f) Make sure that the finish of the hydraulic crown is in the correct condition.
     (g) Make sure that the play of the brake release is correct.
Make sure that none of the pistons moves.
     (h) If the inspection shows damage that can prevent the normal operation of the brake unit:
   (5) With the parking brake not applied, shake the piston housing manually to find if the brake piston-housing bolts are correctly tightened.
     (a) If the piston housing is loose, replace the brake (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-400-001).

  • There are no missing clips.
     (d) Make sure that there are no cracks on the thrust plate.
NOTE: If the inspection shows repaired cracks, it is not necessary to replace the brake unit.
     (e) Make sure that there are no cracks or signs of overheat on the visible part of the torque tube.

     (i) Make sure that none of the pistons moves.
     (j) If the inspection shows damage that can prevent the normal operation of the brake unit:
1 Replace the brake unit (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-400-001).
2 Remove the protection devices from the axle and do an inspection of the axle (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 32-42-27-400-001).
