TASK 31-33-55-920-001-A
Discard the Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) Battery
3. Job Set-up
Subtask 31-33-00-010-061-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Get Access
   (1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT) in position at the zone 312.
   (2) Open the access door 312AR.
Subtask 31-33-00-860-058-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration
NOTE: For this procedure you can use ULTRASONIC TEST SET part number (P/N) 42A12 or equivalent.
   (1) On the ULB, look at the date on the battery replacement label. If the date is expired, replace the battery (Ref. AMM TASK 31-33-55-920-001).
   (2) If you use the 42A12-1 ULTRASONIC TEST SET (42A12-1):
  • If necessary, set the INPUT switch to INT
  • Set the TUNING potentiometer to between 30KHz and 45KHz
  • Set the GAIN potentiometer to the maximum position.
  • Make a short circuit between the ULB water switch and the battery body with an ELECTRICAL LEAD.
  • Put the microphone of the ultrasonic test set as near as possible to the ULB.
Tune the ultrasonic test set to get the best signal.
   (3) If you use an TS200 ULTRASONIC TEST SET (TS200):
  • Turn the ULTRASONIC TEST SET (TS200) ON with the switch from the left side of the housing.
4. Procedure
NOTE: It is necessary to select the applicable procedure for the test tool you use.
Subtask 31-33-00-710-099-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Operational Test of the Underwater Locator Beacon (ULB) with Ultrasonic Test Set (TS200)
NOTE: The Ultrasonic Test Set (TS200) is compatible with the DK100, DK120, DK130 and the DK140 ULB.
ACTION
RESULT
1.On the DFDR at the ULB:
  • Connect the plug of the harness to the TS200 ULTRASONIC TEST SET (TS200) and the clamp to the beacon outer housing.
  • Place the probe on the ULB center conductor at the end of the beacon.
On the Ultrasonic Test Set (TS200):
  • The display shows the ULB battery voltage.
2.On the Ultrasonic Test Set (TS200):
  • Press the red button.

  • The display is blank.
  • A pinging sound from the TS200 ULTRASONIC TEST SET (TS200) shows that the beacon is active.
  • If no sound is heard repeat this test in a different area.
  • If the test continues to fail replace the ULB (Ref. AMM TASK 31-33-55-920-001).
  • Release the red button.

3.On the DFDR at the ULB:
  • Remove the clamp and the probe from the ULB.

4.On the Ultrasonic Test Set (TS200):
  • Turn the switch to OFF.

  • All the indicators go off.
Subtask 31-33-00-710-100-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Operational Test of the ULB with the Ultrasonic Test Set (42A12-1)
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the beacon from its support on the aircraft during this test.
ACTION
RESULT
On the Ultrasonic Test Set:

1.Turn the GAIN potentiometer to a fully clockwise position.
A background noise must be heard. If no noise is heard replace the battery of the Ultrasonic Test Set.
2.Rub the fingers in front of the microphone.
From speaker you must hear a noise.
3.On the DFDR at the ULB:
  • Make a short circuit between the ULB water switch and the battery body with an ELECTRICAL LEAD.

4.On the Ultrasonic Test Set:
  • Set the GAIN control at a good listening level.
  • Point the microphone of the test set to the water switch end of the beacon.
On the Ultrasonic Test Set:
5. Close-up
Subtask 31-33-00-860-059-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Put the aircraft back to its initial configuration.
   (1) On the ULTRASONIC TEST SET:
  • Set the TUNING potentiometer to zero.
  • Set the GAIN potentiometer to OFF.
   (2) If installed, disconnect the electrical lead that connects the water switch to the body of the battery (short circuit).
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
   (3) Make sure that there is no grease on the support of the ULB and the water switch.
If you find grease, clean it off with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Trichlorotrifluoroethane Legacy (Material No.08BBV9) .
   (4) Make sure that there are no markings or labels other than the battery replacement label on the ULB.
They can decrease the propagation.
Subtask 31-33-00-410-060-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Close Access
   (1) Close access panel 312AR.
   (2) Remove the access platform(s).
