Repair of the Blades of the Ram Air Turbine

TASK 29-22-00-300-001-A
Repair of the Blades of the Ram Air Turbine

WARNING: PUT THE SAFETY DEVICES AND THE WARNING NOTICES IN POSITION BEFORE YOU START A TASK ON OR NEAR:
  • THE FLIGHT CONTROLS
  • THE FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACES
  • THE LANDING GEAR AND THE RELATED DOORS
  • COMPONENTS THAT MOVE.
MOVEMENT OF COMPONENTS CAN KILL OR CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE TRAVEL RANGES OF THE FLIGHT CONTROLS SURFACES ARE CLEAR. MOVEMENT OF FLIGHT CONTROLS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE RAT TRAVEL RANGE IS CLEAR BEFORE YOU EXTEND/RETRACT THE RAT.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE GROUND SAFETY-LOCKS ARE IN POSITION ON THE LANDING GEAR. THIS WILL PREVENT UNWANTED MOVEMENT OF THE LANDING GEAR, AND THUS POSSIBLE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT AND/OR EQUIPMENT.
WARNING: DO NOT GET THE FLUID ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. IF YOU DO:
  • FLUSH IT AWAY WITH CLEAN WATER
  • GET MEDICAL AID.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU TOUCH OR MOVE THE RAM AIR TURBINE (RAT). THE RAT BLADES ARE MADE OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL AND CAN EASILY BECOME DAMAGED.
FIN: 2GE

4. Procedure
Subtask 29-22-00-160-052-A
A. Cleaning of the Repair Area of the RAT Blades
   (1) Clean the repair area of the RAT blade with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) to remove all contamination.
Subtask 29-22-00-330-050-A
B. Repair of the Aluminum RAT Blades
NOTE: Airbus recommends that you repair the area with the maximum damage of the thinnest cross section of the blade first. The examples of the thinnest cross section of the blade are the blade tip, the leading and the trailing edge. This will help to prevent work if the damage is not in the limits.
   (1) Repair the damage in the area C:
     (a) A damage in the area C which is less than the limits is permitted without a repair (Ref. AMM TASK 29-22-00-210-001).
   (2) Repair the damage on the surface of the areas A, B, D:
     (a) Measure the normal blade thickness at the repair area and record it as the dimension 'T'.
     (b) Calculate the maximal depth 'Y' of the repair as follows:
       1 For the area 'A': Y = T x 0.05 or Y = 0.51 mm (0.0201 in.). Use the smallest result.
       2 For the area 'B': Y = T x 0.05 or Y = 0.25 mm (0.0098 in.). Use the smallest result.
       3 For the area 'D': Y = T x 0.05 or Y = 0.51 mm (0.0201 in.). Use the smallest result.
     (c) Remove the scratches in an area with a radius of 10 times the permitted depth of the repair, dimension 'Y':
1 Use the abrasive paper grade 400 and rub along the length of the scratch until the surface is smooth.
   (3) Repair the damage on the trailing edge and the leading edge in the areas A, B, D:
     (a) Remove the damage on a length of 5 times the depth of the damage on each side of the damaged area.
     (b) Rub the area with abrasive paper grade 400.
   (4) Repair the damage on the tip of the turbine blade (area F):
     (a) Remove the damage from the blade tip corners (area F) in all directions.
     (b) Remove the same quantity of the material from the blade tip corners of the other RAT blade to keep the turbine assembly balance.
   (5) Clean the turbine blades:
     (a) Clean the turbine blades with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) and a lint-free cloth Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
   (6) Apply Surface Pretreatment-Light Alloys Chemical Conversion Yellow - (Material No.10ABC1) to the repaired area.
   (7) Let the solution stay on the surface for a minimum of 1 minute.
   (8) Flush the applicator with water and discard it.
   (9) Fully clean the repaired area with water.
   (10) Make the area dry with a new lint-free cloth Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
