A. Removal of the Fuel Pump 37QA(38QA)
CAUTION: DO NOT REMOVE :
  • THE RETAINER PIN-AND-SPRING ASSEMBLY FROM THE FUEL PUMP
  • THE RETAINER BAULK ARM FROM THE FUEL PUMP CANISTER
THE REMOVAL OF THESE PARTS CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
CAUTION: DO NOT EXTEND THE RETAINER PIN-AND-SPRING ASSEMBLY TO MORE THAN ITS LIMIT BECAUSE THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO IT. IF THE RETAINER PIN-AND -SPRING ASSEMBLY IS DAMAGED THE SLIDE-VALVE CAN MOVE AND CAUSE LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANKS.
CAUTION: DO NOT TURN THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE FUEL PUMP. IF THE FUEL PUMP SLIDE-VALVE TURNS IT CAN CAUSE FUEL TO LEAK.
CAUTION: THE RETAINER BAULK-ARM (11) MUST BE IN THE OPEN POSITION. THIS WILL PREVENT ACCIDENTAL SLIDE-VALVE MOVEMENT THAT COULD CAUSE FUEL TO LEAK.
   (1) Remove the bolts (5).
   (2) Disconnect the electrical connector from the electrical receptacle (12).
   (3) Put CAP - BLANKING on the electrical connector and the receptacle (12).
   (4) Remove the bolts (3).
   (5) Install the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP or the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP on the applicable fuel pump as follows:
     (a) Install the screws (22) into the tooling holes (8).
CAUTION: YOU MUST USE THE TOOLING HOLES WHEN YOU INSTALL THE EXTRACTOR TOOL. THIS WILL PREVENT LEAKAGE OF FUEL FROM THE FUEL TANK.
     (b) Turn the knobs (24) together in small equal increments.
   (6) Turn the knobs (24) to move the slide valve apart from the pump canister.
   (7) Pull down on the handle (23) of the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP until the movement of the fuel pump (2) and the slide-valve is stopped by the retainer pin-and-spring assembly.
NOTE: The fuel inlet is closed when the slide valve movement is completed.
   (8) Use the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP to turn the fuel pump (2) and slide-valve assembly counterclockwise until the head of the retainer pin is clear of the slot in the fuel pump flange.
   (9) Remove the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP from the fuel pump (2).
   (10) Put the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL) in position below the pump drain hole.
WARNING: USE PROTECTIVE GOGGLES AND GLOVES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAMAGE.
   (11) Remove and discard the lockwire from the drain bolt (6).
   (12) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (6) and the O-ring (7).
   (13) Drain approximately 0.5 l (0.132 USgal) of fuel from the fuel pump (2) and the fuel pump canister into the CONTAINER 3 L(3/4 USGAL).
   (14) Monitor the fuel that drains from the pump drain hole. If the fuel that flows from the pump drain hole is more than approximately 0.5 l (0.1321 USgal), do this procedure:
NOTE: This will make sure that the slide valve seal is correctly positioned.
     (a) Install the drain bolt (6) and the O-ring (7).
     (b) Use the 558-1-05903-002 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP to turn the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve clockwise. Align the stop pin in the slide valve flange, with the stop pin location hole in the canister.
     (c) Make sure that the slot in the flange of the fuel pump (2) engages with the retaining pin and spring assembly.
     (d) Push the fuel pump (2) and the slide valve up and fully into the fuel pump canister.
     (e) Do steps (5) thru (9) again and remove the fuel pump (2) and slide valve from the canister again.
     (f) Hold the fuel pump (2) and remove the drain bolt (6) and the O-ring (7).
     (g) Drain all fuel from the fuel pump (2) into the container.
   (15) Monitor the fuel that drains from the pump drain hole again. If the fuel that flows from the pump drain hole is more than approximately 0.5 l (0.1321 USgal), do this procedure:
     (a) Install the drain bolt (6) and the O-ring (7).
     (b) Defuel the center tank (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-001).
     (c) Hold the fuel pump (2). Remove the drain bolt (6) and the O-ring (7). Discard the O-ring (7).
     (d) Drain all fuel from the fuel pump (2) into the container.
   (16) Record the position of the electrical receptacle (12).
   (17) Install the hooks (21) of the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP in the holes (4).
   (18) Turn the baulk-arm (11) of the fuel pump retainer until it is clear of the fuel pump flange.
   (19) Pull down on the handles (23) to remove the fuel pump (2).
NOTE: The fuel-pump slide-valve stop-pin will not let the slide valve be pushed in. The slide-valve fuel-inlet will stay closed until the slide-valve is turned during the fuel pump installation procedure.
   (20) Remove the 558-1-05903 EXTRACTOR - FUEL PUMP.
   (21) Examine the fuel pump (2) and the adjacent aircraft structure for signs of fuel leakage.
