(a) Remove the damaged vapor seal (Ref. AMM TASK 28-13-42-000-001). Subtask 28-13-42-330-050-A
A. Repair of the Vapor Seal Membrane
(1) Examine the installed vapor seal and the material to find what it is made of:
1 3 VI R20 and 3 V1 R20A are made of glass cloth soaked with epichlorohydrin attached on the tedlar poly-vinyl fluoride.
2 The tedlar face of 3 V1 R20 and 3 V1 R20A looks glossy and the epichlorohydrin face looks woven.
(b) Identify the vapor seal material (3 NX1 R20 (AERAZUR manufacturer)) as follows:
1 3 NX1 R20 is made of nomex soaked with epichlorohydrin attached on the tedlar PVF.
2 The tedlar face of 3 NX1 R20 looks glossy and the epichlorohydrin face looks woven.
(c) Identify the vapor seal material (865 fabric (manufacturer JEHIER)) as follows:
1 865 fabric is a nomex fabric with one face painted with viton.
2 The face looks matt.
(2) Repair the vapor seal (materials 3 V1 R20, 3 V1 R20A and 3 NX1 R20) as follows:
(a) Clean the vapor-seal repair area with Non Aqueous Cleaner-General - - (Material No.08BAA9) .
(b) On the damaged vapor seal:
1 Cut the damaged part of the vapor seal in the shape of a circle or rectangle.
2 Make a border of 30 mm (1.18 in.) around the repair cutout in the vapor seal.
3 Prepare the patch of the repair material (3 NX1 R20) to align the dimension of the identified repair area on the vapor seal.
4 Lightly rub the two repair surfaces that are to be connected with a Abrasive-- Emery cloth - (Material No.14FAE1) .
5 Clean the patch and the vapor seal again with Non Aqueous Cleaner_- Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone - (Material No.08BBF1) .
(c) Prepare the adhesive compound as follows:
1 Fully mix the Adhesive-Vapor Seal Fuel Tank - - (Material No.05LCA1) (100 parts of CEMENT S-707 to 5 parts of HARDENER R by weight).
2 Let the adhesive compound dry for 10 minutes and then apply a second layer of the adhesive compound.
3 Let the second layer dry until it is not tacky.
4 Attach the patch to the vapor seal accurately above the prepared repair area.
5 Push the patch lightly into position with your fingers to prevent the air bubbles between the joint faces.
6 Apply the adhesive compound ( Adhesive-Vapor Seal Fuel Tank - - (Material No.05LCA1) ) on the repair contour.
(3) Repair the vapor seal (material 865 fabric) as follows:
(b) On the damaged vapor seal:
1 Cut the damaged part of the vapor seal in the shape of a circle or rectangle.
2 Make a border of 40 mm (1.57 in.) around the repair cutout in the vapor seal.
3 Prepare the patch of the repair material (865 fabric) to align the dimension of the identified repair area on the vapor seal.
4 Clean the patch and the vapor seal again with Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Isopropyl Alcohol - (Material No.08BBD1) .
(c) Repair the vapor seal (small or moderate repair) as follows:
1 Apply adhesive Adhesive-Vapor Seal Fuel Tank Viton dissolution - (Material No.05LCB1) on the vapor seal membrane and the smooth face of the patch.
2 Let it dry as specified in Adhesive-Vapor Seal Fuel Tank Viton dissolution - (Material No.05LCB1) sheet.
3 Put the patch on the area to be repaired.
4 Put the patch above the vapor seal membrane:
a Apply heat with an iron or hot-air blow gun.
b Make sure that the temperature is 180 deg.C (356 deg.F).
6 If used, remove the TAPE - ADHESIVE.
Subtask 28-13-42-960-050-A (1) Examine the installed vapor seal and the material to find what it is made of:
NOTE: If the length of the damaged vapor seal is more than 127 mm (5.00 in.), you can replace the vapor seal.
NOTE: If the damage of the vapor seal is caused by a wrinkled area, you can replace the vapor seal. A repair of the vapor seal is not necessary when the areas of the vapor seal are wrinkled by thermal damage.
NOTE: All the materials have the same specifications but are of different chemical nature.
You can use the materials that follow to repair the vapor seal:
(a) Identify the vapor seal materials (3 V1 R20 (AERAZUR or SUPERFLEXIT manufacturer) and 3 V1 R20A (AERAZUR manufacturer)) as follows: You can use the materials that follow to repair the vapor seal:
- 3 NX 1 R20 material to repair the vapor seal membrane made of 3 V1 R20
- 3 NX 1 R20 material to repair the vapor seal membrane made of 3 V1 R20A
