A. Safety Precautions
WARNING: BEFORE YOU DO WORK IN OR NEAR A FUEL TANK, MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE SAFETY PROCEDURES. THIS WILL PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.
   (1) You must obey the fuel safety procedures when you do work in a fuel tank (Ref. AMM TASK 28-10-00-910-001).
   (2) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in the cockpit to tell persons not to operate the flight controls.
   (3) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to operate the landing gear doors.
   (4) As necessary, use the applicable SAFETY BARRIERS, specified by the operator's instructions and your local regulations.

B. Install Test Equipment
F Clack Valve Gag - Installation ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
   (1) Drain the remaining fuel from the vent surge tank (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-003).
   (2) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT) in position below the applicable zone 550 or 650.
   (3) Remove the applicable NACA vent intake 550AB(650AB) (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-47-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 28-10-00-910-002).
   (4) Install the 98D28004080001 GAG - CLACK VALVE in the clack valves. Tighten the nut (1) to retain each of the 98D28004080001 GAG - CLACK VALVE in the clack valves.
   (5) Make sure that the flags (1) hang from the related, open, NACA vent intake door 550AB(650AB).

C. Fuel Configuration
   (1) The applicable wing tank must be full of fuel for a minimum of 30 minutes before the test.
   (2) Fully refuel the applicable wing tank (Ref. AMM TASK 12-11-28-650-003).
   (3) Drain the remaining fuel from the center tank (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-003).

   (1) Extend the flaps fully (Ref. AMM TASK 27-50-00-866-008).
   (2) Make sure that the 98D27803000000 LOCKING TOOL-FLAP SLAT LEVER,INT. POSITION is on the slat/flap control lever.
   (3) Extend the spoilers fully (Ref. AMM TASK 27-60-00-866-002).
   (4) Make sure that the 98D27604000000 COLLAR-SAFETY, SPOILER or 98D27604004000 COLLAR SAFETY SPOILER is on each of the spoiler servo-controls.

   (3) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in the applicable MLG bay below the access panel 147AZ 148AZ.
   (4) Remove the applicable access panel 147AZ 148AZ, (Ref. AMM TASK 57-17-11-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 28-10-00-910-002).
   (5) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 521(621).
   (6) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 5M (16 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 522(622).
   (7) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in the applicable MLG bay below the Wing tank rear spar.
   (8) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 574(674).
   (9) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 5M (16 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 575(675).

   (12) Remove the applicable dry-bay access-cover 521AZ 521BZ 621AZ 621BZ (Ref. AMM TASK 57-27-11-000-005).

F. Get Access
   (1) Open the MLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-010-001).

   (7) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE in the applicable MLG bay below the Wing tank rear spar.
   (8) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 3M (10 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 574(674).
   (9) Put an ACCESS PLATFORM 5M (16 FT)- ADJUSTABLE below the applicable zone 575(675).

4. Procedure
Subtask 28-11-00-790-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Visual Inspection
   (1) Look for signs of fuel leakage in these areas:
  • tank seals and sealant
  • structure, brackets and clamps
  • fuel pipelines, couplings, bonded items, brackets and clamps.
   (2) Talcum Powder Procedure:
WARNING: WHEN YOU USE COMPRESSED AIR:
  • USE THE CORRECT PROTECTION (FACE SHIELD OR GOGGLES)
  • DO NOT POINT THE AIRFLOW AT YOURSELF OR OTHER PERSONS.
LOOSE PARTICLES AND/OR HIGH PRESSURE AIR CAN CAUSE INJURY.
CAUTION: USE THE TALCUM POWDER PROCEDURE ONLY ON THE EXTERNAL SURFACES OF THE FUEL TANKS.
     (a) Dry the area of the possible leak with a Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) .
     (b) Dry the area fully with a GROUND AIR-SUPPLY UNIT(LOW PRESSURE).
     (c) Apply Testing Medium-Fuel Leak Detection White Powder - (Material No.14CDB1) to the area with a BRUSH - BRISTLED, SOFT.
     (d) Monitor the area for a change in color of the talcum powder. This will show the location of a fuel leak and the rate of the leakage.

   (4) Remove the access platform(s).
   (5) Close the MLG doors (Ref. AMM TASK 32-12-00-410-001).
   (6) Refuel, defuel or transfer fuel, as necessary (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-869-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 12-11-28-650-003) (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-001).
