A. Safety Precautions
   (1) Make sure that the required tools and equipment are available to do this procedure.
   (2) This procedure that follows is only applicable to Antimicrobial Agent-Fuel System Liquid Additive - (Material No.11KBB1) . The material is Kathon FP1.5.
   (3) If you use biocide, it is mandatory to use a calibrated METERING EQUIPMENT - BIOCIDE,FLIGHTLINE FUEL ADD.INC. (compliant to EI1566) to mix the biocide into the fuel tanks. This is to make sure that the biocide is mixed correctly with the fuel.
   (4) If the engines are fed with biocide concentrations more than the limits permitted by the engine manufacturer, there is a high risk of unstable operation of the engines.
   (5) No other method of dosing of biocide is permitted by Airbus. If a Metered Injection Rig (El1566) is not available, you must use the non-biocide process.
   (6) Do a check for biocide that was used in last 30 refuellings.
   (7) To avoid the interaction of different biocides:
     (a) You must use the same biocide that is used in last 30 refuellings (prevents the formation of precipitates).
     (b) Airbus recommends to use a separate injection unit for Biobor and Kathon (prevents the risk of crystal formation).
   (8) You must obey the fuel safety procedures when you do work on the fuel system (Ref. AMM TASK 28-00-00-910-001).
   (9) As necessary, use the applicable SAFETY BARRIERS, specified by the operator's instructions and your local regulations.
   (10) Make sure that the ground safety locks are installed on the landing gear (Ref. AMM TASK 32-00-00-481-001).
   (11) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in the cockpit to tell persons not to operate:
  • The aircraft engines
  • The flap/slat system
  • The fuel system.

(Ref. AMM TASK 31-60-00-860-001).
4. Procedure
Subtask 28-11-00-680-061-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Procedure to Drain the water from the Tanks
   (1) Drain the water from all the tank(s) (Ref. AMM TASK 12-32-28-281-001):
     (a) Make sure the fuel sample is clear and bright and there is no water in the sample.
   (2) Defuel the aircraft fuel tanks to unpumpable level (Ref. AMM TASK 28-25-00-650-001).
Subtask 28-11-00-600-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
B. Curative Treatment Procedure for Microbiological Contamination - Kathon Method
CAUTION: DO NOT USE A LARGE QUANTITY OF KATHON BIOCIDE IN THE FUEL. MORE THAN 100 MILLILITERS/1000 LITERS IS NOT PERMITTED IN: - THE ENGINES - THE FUEL TANKS - THE FUEL UPLIFTED TO THE AIRCRAFT.
   (1) Position the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) and bond to the aircraft.
   (2) Position the bowser/refuel truck and bond to the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566).
   (3) Connect the fuel hose from Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) to the aircraft.
   (4) Connect the fuel hose from bowser/refuel truck to the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566):
     (a) If you use a refuel truck and hydrant system, connect the truck to the hydrant system.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE CONCENTRATION OF BIOCIDE IS NOT MORE THAN THE PERMITTED LIMITS. IF THE CONCENTRATION OF BIOCIDE IS MORE THAN THE PERMITTED LIMITS, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE OPERATION OF THE ENGINES WILL NOT BE STABLE.
   (5) Make sure that the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) is calibrated and set to supply 100ml Kathon FP1.5 per 1000 liters of fuel:
     (a) If necessary, calibrate the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) and set to the required concentration level. Obey the manufacturers instruction to calibrate the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566).
   (6) Airbus recommends only putting in the amount of biocide needed for that particular tank into the injection rig:
     (a)    (7)    (8) Put sufficient supply of biocide in the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) for that particular tank:
     (a) Care must be taken and full chemical resistant PPE worn.
     (b) Fill the tank to 100% fill level.
CAUTION: DO NOT DOSE ALL THE FUEL TANKS AT THE SAME TIME. IF YOU DO, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE BIOCIDE CONCENTRATION WILL BE TOO HIGH. THIS CAN CAUSE UNSTABLE ENGINE OPERATION.
   (9) Before you proceed further, record the volumes of:
  • The volume of biocide in the rig
  • The quantity of fuel in each tank
  • The bowser/injection rig flow meter/totaliser readings.
   (10) Make sure that you apply fuel with Kathon FP1.5 at the correct concentration.
   (11) Do a manual refuel of each fuel tank (in the sequence shown in the table, refer to step 6) to its maximum capacity with correct concentration of biocide (Ref. AMM TASK 12-11-28-650-004):
     (a) This procedure helps to maintain the Center of Gravity (CG) in the permitted limits.
   (12) Record fuel and the biocide volumes for each tank before and after each refuel:
     (a) You can get the fuel volume from the bowser or the refuel truck. If this is not available, you can calculate the fuel volume as follows:
---------------------------------------------
! !
! Vf = Mf !
! ------ !
! Df !
! !
---------------------------------------------
Where:

  • Vf = Volume of fuel (liters)
  • Mf = Mass of fuel (kg)
  • Df = Density of fuel (kg/liter) (typically min 0.775kg/liter, but you must use the actual density if this is available).
     (b) Do this for each tank in turn before you proceed to the next tank.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE CONCENTRATION OF BIOCIDE IS NOT MORE THAN THE PERMITTED LIMITS WITH THE CHECK CALCULATION METHOD. IF THE CONCENTRATION OF BIOCIDE IS MORE THAN THE PERMITTED LIMITS, THERE IS A RISK THAT THE OPERATION OF THE ENGINES WILL NOT BE STABLE.
   (13) Do a check calculation for each tank as follows:
     (a) Calculate the concentration of biocide as follows:
--------------------------------------------
! !
! Cb = 1000*Vb !
! --------- !
! Vf !
! !
--------------------------------------------
Where:

  • Cb = Concentration of biocide (ml/1000 liters)
  • Vb = Volume of biocide (ml)
  • Vf = Volume of fuel (liters).
     (b) Make sure that the volume of biocide is not more than the value given in the table or the concentration calculated is not more than 100ml/1000 liters for Kathon FP1.5 in each tank(s):
1 If this maximum concentration is exceeded, then do not continue but get advice from the Airbus customer-service department.
   (14) After all tanks have been defueled, disconnect and remove the fuel hoses, the bowser, the Metered Injection Rig (EI1566) and the bondings.
   (15) Install the refuel cap.
   (16) Let the biocide dosed fuel stay in the tanks between 12 and 24 hours:
NOTE: Airbus recommends to use the full 24 hours for the best performance.
     (a) During the soak time, replace the engine filters and the fuel filter elements, for the replacement of the filter elements, go to Para 4.C.
   (17) During the soak time:
  • Do not move the aircraft
  • Do not operate the fuel pumps or APU
  • Do not drain water from the fuel tanks (this will contain a high concentration of biocide).
   (18) After the soak time, biocide dosed fuel is burned through the APU and the engines during normal operations.
   (19) You must burn fuel or defuel in less than 24 hours after the end of the soak time.
