A. Safety Precautions
4. ProcedureWARNING:
BEFORE YOU DO WORK IN OR NEAR A FUEL TANK, MAKE SURE THAT YOU OBEY ALL THE SAFETY PROCEDURES. THIS WILL PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT.
(1) You must obey the fuel safety procedures when you do work in a fuel tank. But where differences occur, you must use the approved precautions of this procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 28-00-00-910-001). WARNING:
DO NOT USE METAL WIRE WOOL IN FUEL TANKS. THE METAL WIRE WOOL STRANDS CAN CAUSE ELECTRICAL ARCING, WHICH CAN START A FIRE.
(2) You must not use metallic wire wool in a fuel tank. Subtask 28-10-00-910-051-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
(1) You must obey these precautions when you go in a fuel tank or when you remove the fuel-tank access panels (Ref. AMM TASK 57-27-11-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 57-27-11-000-002) (Ref. AMM TASK 57-17-11-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-45-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-46-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 28-12-47-000-001).
Read these precautions together with the special notes and precautions which are applicable to specified maintenance operations.
(3) You must put on CLOTH - PROTECTIVE when you do work in or around a fuel tank.
(4) Make sure that the work area is clean and open to the air.
(5) The person in the fuel tank and the safety person out of the fuel tank must obey these precautions:
(a) There must be a continuous flow of clean filtered air through the fuel tank when the person is in the tank.
(b) If possible, the safety person must position himself to be able to see the person in the fuel tank and monitor his safety.
(c) You must put on an RESPIRATOR - AIR SUPPLIED to go into a fuel tank, unless the Local Regulations permit you to work without a respirator. The Local Regulations must include a risk assessment for:
1 Fire/Explosion. Do not enter a fuel tank until the fuel-gas concentration is less than 10% of the applicable Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) (or less than the Local Regulatory-Authority limit).
2 Health. Do not go into a fuel tank (without an air-supplied respirator) unless the fuel-gas concentration in the tank is less than the local Occupational Exposure Limits (Threshold Limit Values or equivalent).
(6) If fuel goes in your eyes:
(a) Flush them with clean water for five minutes (during this time, lift your top and bottom eyelids frequently to make sure that they are fully washed).
(b) Get medical aid.
(7) You must make sure that all the equipment you use in the fuel tank is clean. Do not let oil, dirt, grit, swarf or loose paint cause contamination of the tank.
(8) Do not go in a tank until you know the location and dimensions of the work areas.
(10) Do not cause damage to the internal structure, sealant, electrical cables or conduits during maintenance.
(11) Use MAT - PROTECTIVE on the floor of the fuel tank to prevent:
(13) If possible, safety all components before you place them inside the fuel tank.
(14) Use only an approved Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) to dry the fuel tank internally.
(15) Use only RED tie wraps in the fuel tanks. The part number is NSA935401-XXR. Where 'XX' is the length and 'R' gives the color red.
