Installation of the Side Stick Spring Rods

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE SIDE STICK ASSEMBLY STAYS IN THE VERTICAL POSITION DURING THE MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. IF NOT THERE IS A RISK OF SKYDROL LEAKAGE. SKYDROL CAN CAUSE INJURY AND/OR DAMAGE.

NOTE: This task is not applicable for the new-generation side-stick unit. For the new-generation side-stick unit, refer to the procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 27-92-41-400-802). To know if the side-stick installed on the aircraft is a new-generation side-stick unit, refer to the procedure (Ref. AMM TASK 27-92-41-860-801).

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 27-92-41-860-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

A. Aircraft Maintenance Configuration

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(1) Make sure that the ground service network is energized (Ref. AMM TASK 24-42-00-861-001).
(2) Make sure that the ACCESS PLATFORM 2M (6 FT) - ADJUSTABLE is in position at the access door 822.
(3) Make sure that the access door 822 is open.
(4) On the battery power center 105VU:

make sure that the protective cover is removed.

(5) Make sure that the side stick assembly is installed on the 98D27303001001 HOLDER - SIDE STICK.
(6) Make sure that the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING is installed.
(7) Make sure that the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) is in position on the roll transducer unit (8) and on the pitch transducer unit (6).
(8) Make sure that the WARNING NOTICE(S) which tells persons not to operate the side stick is in position on the side stick.

B. Installation of the Tools

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(1) Install the 98D27303004000 TOOL-ARTIFICIAL FEEL RODS (5) on the structure of the side stick (10).
(2) Put the dial test indicator at the bellcrank of the pitch transducer unit (6).
(3) Adjust the dial test indicator to the 0 position.
(4) Remove the blanking cap from the electrical connector (15):

Side Stick Assembly ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

for the CAPT side stick, electrical connector 2197VC
for the F/O side stick, electrical connector 2188VC.

(5) Connect the 355M03200001 TOOL-28 VDC POWER SUPPLY to the electrical connector (15) and to the 28 VDC aircraft network.
(6) Set the switch of the 355M03200001 TOOL-28 VDC POWER SUPPLY to the ON position.

Subtask 27-92-41-080-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

C. Removal of the Tools
(1) Remove the 98D27903500000 PIN-SIDE STICK LOCKING (10) from the center universal joint of the side stick assembly.

Side Stick Assembly ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(2) Remove the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) from the pitch transducer unit (6).

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(3) Make sure that the dial test indicator stays at 0 mm +0.01 mm (0.0004 in.) -0.01 mm (-0.0004 in.).
(a) If it is not the case, do the adjustment of the input rods of the pitch transducer unit (6) (Ref. AMM TASK 27-92-41-400-002).

4. Procedure
Subtask 27-92-41-420-061-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

A. Installation of the Side Stick Spring Rods
(1) Clean the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(2) Do an inspection of the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
(3) Install one spring rod (19) (pitch damper side).
(4) Make sure that the spring rod (19) is installed in the direction identified during the removal.
(5) Install the bolts (17).
(6) Set the switch of the 355M03200001 TOOL-28 VDC POWER SUPPLY to the OFF position.
(7) Adjust the length of the spring rod (19) to get 0 at the dial test indicator.
Adjust the spring rod (19) as follows:
(a) Cut and discard the lockwire.
(b) Loosen the nut (20) and disengage the lockwasher (21).
(c) Turn the body (22) of the spring rod (19).
(8) Put the nut (20) in contact with the lock washer (21). Do not tighten the nut (20) at this time.
(9) Install the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) on the pitch transducer unit (6).

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(10) Remove the bolts (17) and the spring rod (19).
(11) Tighten the nut (20) on the lockwasher (21).
(12) Install the spring rod (19) and the bolts (17).
(13) Remove the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) from the pitch transducer unit (6).

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(14) Make sure that the dial test indicator stays on 0 +0.01 mm (0.0004 in.) -0.01 mm (-0.0004 in.).
(a) If it is not the case:

do again the adjustment of the spring rod (19) as the rod length has increased because of locking of the nut (20).

(15) Install the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) on the pitch transducer unit (6).

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(16) Remove the bolts (17) and the spring rod (19).
(17) Safety the nut (20) to the lockwasher (21) with lockwire-corrosion resistant steel dia. 0.8 mm (0.03 in.).
(18) Do again the same operations for the other spring rod.

NOTE: Do not install the spring rod (19) at this time if you must also install the other rod.

(19) Install the spring rod (19) and the bolts (17).

NOTE: If you have removed the two spring rods (19), install them at their related position.

(20) Install the washers (16), the nuts (18) and tighten.
(21) Remove the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN (7) from the pitch transducer unit (6).

Spring Rods ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

(22) Make sure that the dial test indicator stays at 0 +0.02 mm (0.0008 in.) -0.02 mm (-0.0008 in.).

Subtask 27-92-41-720-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

B. Test
(1) Put the control handle in a nose-up position (3° approximately) then put the control handle in the neutral position. Release the handle.
(2) Make sure that the dial test indicator stays at 0 +0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) -0.05 mm (-0.0020 in.).
If it is not the case, do again the adjustment of the spring rods.
(3) Put the control handle in a nose-down position (3° approximately) then put the control handle in the neutral position. Release the handle.
(4) Make sure that the dial test indicator stays at 0 +0.05 mm (0.0020 in.) -0.05 mm (-0.0020 in.).
If it is not the case, do again the adjustment of the spring rods.
(5) Safety the nuts (15) with new AIPC 27-92-41-01-001 COTTER PINS (18) on the nuts (15).
(6) Remove the 98DNSA20206080 RIGGING PIN from the roll transducer unit (8).
(7) Move the side stick in the full directions below:

nose-up and nose-down
right and left roll.

Make sure that:

the parts move freely
the parts that move do not catch the electrical harness
there is no unwanted materials in the side stick.

5. Close-up
Subtask 27-92-41-410-063-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

A. Connection of the Side Stick Pitch Damper
(1) Install the damper (9) in the bellcrank (11) and the bolt (4).
(2) Install the washer (3), the nut (2) and tighten.
(3) Install a new AIPC 27-92-41-01-080 COTTER PIN (1) on the nut (2).

Subtask 27-92-41-080-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

B. Removal of the Tools
(1) Remove the 98D27303004000 TOOL-ARTIFICIAL FEEL RODS (5) from the structure of the side stick (10).
(2) Disconnect the 355M03200001 TOOL-28 VDC POWER SUPPLY from the electrical connector (15) and from the 28 VDC aircraft network.
(3) Remove the 98D27303001001 HOLDER - SIDE STICK from the side stick assembly.

Subtask 27-92-41-410-064-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL

C. Install the side stick assembly (Ref. AMM TASK 27-92-41-400-001).
