WARNING: THE CARTRIDGE IS AN EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. REMOVE IT BEFORE YOU DISASSEMBLE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. TO PREVENT INJURY TO THE PERSONNEL BECAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION OF THE CARTRIDGE IF IT HAS NOT BEEN FIRED:
  • INSTALL A SHUNT DEVICE.
  • THIS WILL SHUNT THE PINS TOGETHER ON THE CARTRIDGE BEFORE ITS REMOVAL.
DO NOT USE A FOIL SHUNT.

3. Job Set-up
Subtask 26-22-00-941-051-A
A. Put the WARNING NOTICE(S) on the overhead panel 25VU to tell the persons not to operate the APU.
Subtask 26-22-00-010-051-A
B. Get Access
   (1) Put the ACCESS PLATFORM 4M (13 FT) in position below the APU compartment.
   (2) Open access door 314AR and safety it in the open position.
(Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-23-010-801).
   (3) If necessary, use a LIGHT SOURCE - PROBE.
4. Procedure
Subtask 26-22-00-210-050-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Inspection of the APU Fire Extinguishing System
   (1) Fire-Extinguisher Bottle
     (a) Make an inspection of the fire extinguisher bottle for scratches, dents and corrosion. If the depth of the dents is more than 1/16 in./in. (0.06 mm/mm) of average dent diameter, or the depth of the scratches is more than 0.004 in. (0.10 mm), remove and replace the fire-extinguisher assy (bottle, discharge outlet and cartridge) (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-400-001).
     (b) Make sure that the identification plate and caution plate are installed and readable.
     (c) Make an inspection of the mounting lugs, support brackets and the welded seams for cracks, breaks and tears.
     (d) Make an inspection of the connections for dents or corrosion and that the safety wire is correct.
     (e) If the fire-extinguisher bottle is discharged, remove and replace the fire-extinguisher assy (bottle, discharge outlet and cartridge) (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-400-001).
   (2) Cartridge
     (a) Make an inspection at the cartridge connection for damage or corrosion.
NOTE: The maximum service life for:
  • The cartridges dated and purchased before the JULY 31/1991 is 6 years,
  • The cartridges dated and purchased after the JULY 31/1991 is 10 years.
The maximum storage and service life:
  • The cartridges dated and purchased before the JULY 31/1991 is 10 years.
    Thus, storage life longer than 4 years decreases the service life of the cartridge.
  • The cartridges dated and purchased after the JULY 31/1991 is 15 years.
    Thus, storage life longer than 5 years decreases the service life of the cartridge.
     (b) Make an inspection of the cartridge service date given on the cartridge.
     (c) Make sure that the cartridge service life or a combination of storage/service life has not expired.
     (d) Make sure that the cartridge has sufficient service life until the next scheduled inspection.
NOTE: Replace the cartridge (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-42-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-42-400-001):
  • Dated and purchased before the JULY 31/1991 that has more than 10 years of storage/service life,
  • Dated and purchased after the JULY 31/1991 that has more than 15 years of storage/service life.
   (3) Discharge Indicator
     (a) Make an inspection of the discharge indicator for cracks and corrosion.
     (b) Make an inspection of the indicator disc for signs of accidental discharge of the fire extinguishing bottle.
     (c) Make an inspection of the retainer and snap ring for damage.
NOTE: If the items are damaged or lost, replace these parts (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-43-960-001).
   (4) Discharge Outlet
     (a) Make an inspection of the discharge outlet with a LIGHT SOURCE - PROBE for cracks, corrosion, chafing and other damages CMM 262003.
   (5) Bonding Strap
     (a) Make an inspection of the bonding strap terminations for cracks or corrosion and the condition of the protective coating.
     (b) Make an inspection of the bonding strap for wear, breaks or damage.
     (c) If the bonding strap is damaged, replace it.
Subtask 26-22-00-210-050-B ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Inspection of the APU Fire Extinguishing System
   (1) Fire Extinguisher Bottle
     (a) Make an inspection of the fire-extinguisher bottle for scratches, dents and corrosion.
     (b) Make sure that the identification plate and caution plate are installed and readable.
     (c) Make an inspection of the mounting lugs, support brackets and the welded seams for cracks, breaks and tears.
     (d) Make an inspection of the connections for dents or corrosion and that the safety wire is correct.
     (e) If the fire-extinguisher bottle is discharged, remove and replace the fire-extinguisher assy (bottle, discharge outlet and cartridge) (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-000-001) and (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-41-400-001).
   (2) Cartridge
     (a) Make an inspection at the cartridge connection for damage or corrosion.
NOTE: The total life of the cartridges is 10 years. The total life is the total useful life of the cartridge and starts on the date of manufacture.
     (b) Make an inspection of the cartridge service date given on the cartridge.
     (c) Make sure that the cartridge total life has not expired.
     (d) Make sure that the cartridge has sufficient life until the next scheduled inspection.
NOTE: Replace the cartridge that has more than 10 years of total life (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-42-000-001) (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-42-400-001):
   (3) Discharge Indicator
     (a) Make an inspection of the discharge indicator for cracks and corrosion.
     (b) Make an inspection of the indicator disc for signs of accidental discharge of the fire extinguishing bottle.
     (c) Make an inspection of the retainer and snap ring for damage.
NOTE: If the items are damaged or lost, replace these parts (Ref. AMM TASK 26-22-43-960-001).
   (4) Discharge Outlet
     (a) Make an inspection of the discharge outlet with a LIGHT SOURCE - PROBE for cracks, corrosion, chafing and other damages CMM 262076.
   (5) Bonding Strap
     (a) Make an inspection of the bonding strap terminations for cracks or corrosion and the condition of the protective coating.
     (b) Make an inspection of the bonding strap for wear, breaks or damage.
     (c) If the bonding strap is damaged, replace it.
5. Close-up

A. Close Access
   (1) Make sure that the work area is clean and clear of tools and other items.
   (2) Close access door 314AR (Ref. AMM TASK 52-41-23-410-801).
   (3) Remove the access platform(s).
   (4) Remove the WARNING NOTICE(S).
