Installation of the Engine Fire-Extinguisher Bottle

TASK 26-21-41-400-001-A
Installation of the Engine Fire-Extinguisher Bottle

WARNING: THE CARTRIDGE IS AN EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. REMOVE IT BEFORE YOU DISASSEMBLE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. TO PREVENT INJURY TO THE PERSONNEL BECAUSE OF THE EXPLOSION OF THE CARTRIDGE IF IT HAS NOT BEEN FIRED:
  • INSTALL A SHUNT DEVICE.
  • THIS WILL SHUNT THE PINS TOGETHER ON THE CARTRIDGE BEFORE ITS REMOVAL.
DO NOT USE A FOIL SHUNT.
WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU MOVE A FULL FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. A SUDDEN OR HEAVY SHOCK TO A FULL BOTTLE CAN CAUSE UNWANTED DISCHARGE AND INJURY TO PERSONS.
WARNING: IF YOU REMOVE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLES IN A CLOSED HANGAR, MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A FLOW OF NEW AIR IN THE HANGAR.
CAUTION: BEFORE INSTALLATION, MAKE SURE THAT:
  • THE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE, DISCHARGE HEAD AND CARTRIDGE ARE FROM THE SAME VENDOR, AND
  • THE PART NUMBERS ARE THE ONES SPECIFIED IN THE IPC.

A. Installation of the Fire-Extinguisher Bottle
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE MAXIMUM PERMITTED LIFE (MPL) OF THE CARTRIDGE IS LONGER THAN THE TIME TO THE NEXT SCHEDULED DISCARD OF THE CARTRIDGE.
   (1) Remove the blanking plug from the line (4).
   (2) Do an inspection of the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
   (3) Clean the component interfaces and the adjacent area.
   (4) Install the bottle (12):
WARNING: BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU MOVE A FULL FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE. A SUDDEN OR HEAVY SHOCK TO A FULL BOTTLE CAN CAUSE UNWANTED DISCHARGE AND INJURY TO PERSONS.
     (a) Install the bonding lead (14):
1 Put the fire extinguisher bottle (12) with the discharge head/cartridge assembly installed on it in the pylon.
2 Turn the bottle (12) to install the bonding lead (14), the washer (16) and the nut (15) on the screw (17) on the discharge head (10).
     (b) Put the fire extinguisher bottle (12) on its support and push the discharge head (10) into the line (4).
   (5) Tighten the nut (6) on the union (5) by hand as follows:
  • while you hold the nut pin outside its housing, tighten the nut (6) until it stops,
  • loosen the nut (a quarter of a turn maximum) until the pin engages its housing.
   (6) Make sure that the clearance J1 between the nut (6) and the union (5) has a maximum value of 4.3 mm (0.17 in.).
   (7) Install the washers (3), the screws (2) and tighten them.

B. Removal of the Safety Tool
WARNING: DO NOT TOUCH THE CARTRIDGE BEFORE YOU DO THE PROCEDURE APPLICABLE TO DEVICES THAT ARE SENSITIVE TO ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE. ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE CAN CAUSE THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE TO RELEASE ITS CONTENTS SUDDENLY AND CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
WARNING: BEFORE YOU TOUCH THE POWER DEVICE CARTRIDGE, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE GROUNDED AND THAT YOU INSTALL A SHUNT DEVICE ON IT. USE A CAP OR PLUG AS SHUNT DEVICE (THE CAP OR PLUG WILL SHUNT THE PINS TOGETHER ON THE CARTRIDGE). DO NOT USE A FOIL SHUNT. IF YOU TOUCH A POWER DEVICE CARTRIDGE THAT DOES NOT HAVE A SHUNT DEVICE INSTALLED, AN EXPLOSION CAN OCCUR AND CAUSE INJURIES TO YOU.
   (1) Before you touch the cartridge, do the procedure for devices that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (Ref. AMM TASK 20-15-00-910-001).
   (2) Remove the 53100141-1 PLUG, SHUNTM83723-60-18AN CAP, PROTECTIVE from the cartridge (9).
