Check IDG Oil Level and Differential Pressure Indicator (DPI)

TASK 24-21-00-210-046-A
Check IDG Oil Level and Differential Pressure Indicator (DPI)

WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO WORK ON THE ENGINE PARTS AFTER THE ENGINE SHUTDOWN. USE APPLICABLE THERMAL GLOVES. THE ENGINE PARTS CAN STAY HOT FOR ONE HOUR AFTER SHUTDOWN AND CAN BURN YOU.
WARNING: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MATERIAL MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS AND YOUR LOCAL REGULATIONS.
CAUTION: DO NOT DO THIS TASK IF THE IDG IS DISCONNECTED. BEFORE YOU DO A CHECK OF THE IDG OIL LEVEL, MAKE SURE THAT THE IDG IS CONNECTED. A DISCONNECTED IDG CAN CAUSE AN INCORRECT OIL QUANTITY INDICATION AND THUS INCORRECT SERVICING. IF THE LEVEL IS TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW, DAMAGE CAN OCCUR TO THE IDG WHEN IT OPERATES.

     (a) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to start the engine.
   (2) Make sure that the engine 1(2) shutdown occurred not less than 5 minutes before you do this procedure.
   (3) On the overhead maintenance panel 50VU:
     (a) Make sure that the ON legend of the ENG/FADEC GND PWR/1(2) pushbutton switch is off.
     (b) Put a WARNING NOTICE(S) in position to tell persons not to energize the FADEC 1(2).

4. Procedure
Subtask 24-21-00-210-057-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Check of the IDG Oil Level
WARNING: DO NOT GET THE FLUID ON YOUR SKIN OR IN YOUR EYES. IF YOU DO:
  • FLUSH IT AWAY WITH CLEAN WATER
  • GET MEDICAL AID.
WARNING: WHEN YOU USE COMPRESSED AIR:
  • USE THE CORRECT PROTECTION (FACE SHIELD OR GOGGLES)
  • DO NOT POINT THE AIRFLOW AT YOURSELF OR OTHER PERSONS
  • DO NOT LET THE PRESSURE BE MORE THAN 30 PSIG (200 KPA).
LOOSE PARTICLES AND/OR HIGH PRESSURE AIR CAN CAUSE INJURY.
CAUTION: IF YOU DRY MOTORED THE ENGINE OR DID AN ENGINE RUN, MAKE SURE THAT THE OIL LEVEL IS STABLE BEFORE YOU DO THE INSPECTION. THE OIL LEVEL BECOMES STABLE ONLY AFTER A PERIOD OF: - 30 MINUTES IF YOU DRY-MOTORED THE ENGINE, OR - 5 MINUTES IF YOU DID AN ENGINE RUN. THUS, THE LEVEL INDICATIONS ON THE SIGHTGLASS ARE NOT CORRECT BEFORE THE END OF THIS PERIOD. IF YOU ADD OIL WHEN IT IS NOT NECESSARY, FAILURE OF THE IDG CAN OCCUR.
   (1) Do a check of the IDG oil-level sightglass in the vertical position:
     (a) Make sure that no contamination prevents the correct view of the oil level on the IDG oil-level sightglass.
     (b) If there is contamination, clean the IDG oil-level sightglass with the Non Aqueous Cleaner-- Petroleum Based - (Material No.08BBB1) .
     (c) After you clean the IDG oil-level sightglass:
  • Remove the remaining solvent and the contamination with a clean and dry Textile-Lint free Cotton - (Material No.14SBA1) , or
  • Blow compressed air on the IDG oil-level sightglass with the AIR SOURCE FILTERED, DRY to dry it.
   (2) Let the IDG oil become stable for:
  • A minimum of five minutes after the engine shutdown, or
  • 30 minutes after the dry motoring of the engine.
   (3)    (4) Look at the IDG oil-level sightglass:
NOTE: The IDG oil temperature is shown on the ECAM "ELEC SD" page. If the oil temperature is less than 49 DEG.C (120 DEG.F), the oil is cold. If the oil temperature is equal to or more than 49 DEG.C (120 DEG.F), the oil is hot.
NOTE: An internal oil consumption of 1 cc is permitted for each flight hour or when the engines operate.
     (a) If the oil is cold and the oil level is:
1 Immediately above the lower limit of the yellow band (because of the aircraft ramp angle), it is not necessary to drain the IDG oil.
2 In the yellow band, drain the oil to adjust the oil level (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-680-040).
3 Below the green band, add oil to adjust the oil level (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-612-041).
4 In the red band (and if you think that there is an IDG oil leak or an unusual IDG oil consumption):
a Do a visual inspection of the IDG for oil leaks (Ref. AMM TASK 24-21-00-210-047).
b Do the IDG oil leak-test TSM 24-21-00-810-849.
c Do the unusual IDG oil-consumption procedure TSM 24-21-00-810-817.
     (b) If the oil is hot and the oil level is:
1 Between the middle of the green band and the top of the yellow band, it is not necessary to do the IDG oil servicing.
2 Below the middle of the green band, add oil to adjust the oil level (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-612-041).
3 Above the yellow band, drain the oil to adjust the oil level (Ref. AMM TASK 12-13-24-680-040).
