Aircraft Bonding and Grounding (Earthing) for the Refuel/Defuel or Oxygen Servicing Operations

TASK 12-34-24-869-001-B
Aircraft Bonding and Grounding (Earthing) for the Refuel/Defuel or Oxygen Servicing Operations

WARNING: DO NOT WEAR A HEADSET OR TOUCH CABLES/LINES CONNECTED TO THE AIRCRAFT, DURING BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS. LIGHTNING IS DANGEROUS.
1. Reason for the Job
To electrostatically balance the aircraft and the fuel tanker or the aircraft and the oxygen ground-filling equipment (during the refuel/defuel operations and the oxygen servicing operations).
It is mandatory to do the bonding between the aircraft and the fuel tanker before the refuel/defuel operations.
It is mandatory to do the bonding between the aircraft and the oxygen ground-filling equipment before the oxygen servicing operations.
For the grounding (earthing), you must obey the local regulations.
NOTE: The bonding operation is for the electrical continuity between the aircraft and the fuel tanker or the oxygen ground-filling equipment.
The grounding (earthing) operation is for the electrical continuity between the aircraft and the earth.

Maintenance in Storm Conditions - Safety Practices
3. Job Set-up
Subtask 12-34-24-210-056-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Safety Precautions
   (1) For the grounding (earthing), you must obey the local regulations.
If you must ground (earth) the aircraft:
     (a) Make sure that the parking or the hangar CABLE - GROUNDING (EARTHING) is correctly grounded (earthed).
     (b) Make sure that the fuel tanker or the oxygen ground-filling equipment is correctly grounded (earthed).
   (2) During storm conditions or when there are electrical atmospheric conditions:
  • Stop the refueling/defueling or oxygen servicing operations.
  • Do the safety practices for maintenance in storm conditions (Ref. AMM TASK 20-17-00-910-001).
  • Make sure that the aircraft is grounded (earthed).
  • Make sure that there is no personnel around the aircraft.
4. Procedure
Subtask 12-34-24-869-055-A ** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
A. Connection of the Bonding and Grounding (Earthing) Cables
WARNING: ALWAYS CONNECT THE GROUNDING (EARTHING) CABLE TO THE PARKING GROUND (EARTH) POINT BEFORE YOU CONNECT IT TO THE AIRCRAFT. DO NOT ATTACH THE CABLE TO THE AIRCRAFT FIRST (THERE IS A RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK).
CAUTION: ATTACH THE GROUNDING (EARTHING) CABLE ONLY TO THE SPECIFIED GROUNDING (EARTHING) POINTS ON THE AIRCRAFT.
   (1) Grounding (Earthing) Cable
     (a) Airbus recommends that you get a grounding (earthing) cable that has a section of 22 mm2 (0.034 in.2) or more.
     (b) Connect the parking or the hangar CABLE - GROUNDING (EARTHING) to the aircraft grounding (earthing) point:
  • On one of the Main Landing Gear (MLG) legs or
  • On the Nose Landing Gear (NLG) leg.
The aircraft wheels must be on the ground.
     (c) Make sure that the total electrical resistance of the grounding (earthing) cable is not more than 500 milliohms between:
  • The parking grounding (earthing) point and the grounding (earthing) point of the landing gear.
     (d) Make sure that the resistance is not more than 10 milliohms between:
  • The end connector of the grounding (earthing) cable and the nearest adjacent metal part of the landing gear.
   (2) Bonding Cable
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU BOND THE FUEL TANKER TO THE AIRCRAFT. IF YOU DO NOT, AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE CAN OCCUR WHICH CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION OR FIRE.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT YOU BOND THE OXYGEN GROUND-FILLING EQUIPMENT TO THE AIRCRAFT. IF YOU DO NOT, AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE CAN OCCUR WHICH CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION OR FIRE.
     (a) Airbus recommends that you get a bonding cable that has a section of 20 mm2 (0.0310 in.2) or more.
     (b) Make sure that the bonding cable is in the correct condition and obey your local regulations.
     (c) Connect the CABLE-BONDING between the fuel tanker or the oxygen ground-filling equipment and a grounding (earthing) point:
  • On one of the MLG legs or
  • On the NLG leg or
  • On the wing upper surface (if installed).
     (d) Make sure that the resistance of the bonding cable between the aircraft and the fuel tanker or the oxygen ground-filling equipment is not more than 10 ohms.
