MULTIFUNCTION PRINTING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
The printer (PRTR) is designed to achieve the print out on "high contrast low abrasive" paper of reports coming from various systems such as AIDS, FMGC, CFDIU, EVMU either on ground or in flight.
Simple "one hand" in flight or on ground paper roll loading allows 90 feet printing, 3 rolls being stowed on the left rear cockpit wall.

3. System Description
The thermal line PRINTER provides on board print outs for various aircraft systems, one at a time.
When power is applied, the PRINTER determines which inputs are active and which specific system is connected to each active port. Also after a sequence of active port polling, a single inactive port is monitored so that a system which became active after initialization can be added to the active system list.
The PRINTER then switches on each system in order of their priorities (port one has the highest priority, port 12 has the lowest one) and using a hand shake protocol asks the systems for a data transfer. These data are formatted within each system (including the parity bit) and are transmitted on low speed buses. The printer provides a storage capability of 8 kbytes and is able to generate 120 forty character lines per minute. After printing the last message block the paper is advanced automatically.
The PRINTER recognizes the printable ASCII character set and several control characters, and is capable to print 80, 64 or 40 characters per line formats, the 80 characters per line by 24 lines being printed in the landscape mode.

A. Output parameters
The table below contains all the output parameters in the digital form. They are sorted as per the numerical order of their output label. This table gives:
  • SYS LABEL SDI: PRINTER output label for which the parameter is available
  • PARAMETER DEFINITION: parameter name
  • RANGE ACCURACY: measurement range. Maximum value transmitted. When the digital value changes, the change step is equal to the accuracy
  • UNIT: unit in which the digital value is transmitted
  • SIG BIT: indicates whether a sign bit is available
  • DATA BITS: number of bits used by the parameter in the label
  • UPD/MSEC: output transmission interval. The refresh rate is given in milliseconds

6. Component Description
[4TW]
The simplified block diagram of the PRINTER is composed of :
  • Power supply
The power supply is a self resonant switching supply with 250 ms power interrupt transparency on the 5VDC logic supply.
An extended time logic supply provides a data retaining for at least 2 minutes.
  • Thermal print head
The thermal print head used is a thick film, single element line, ceramic, substrate with integral drivers and data shift register.
639 dots are provided, each dot being 0.0065 inches wide per 0.13 inches high.
  • Stepper motor
The stepper motor is of the fractional stepping type, providing operation control throughout the operating temperature range.
  • Switch and light board
This board contains only a SLEW switch, lighting being powered from the 5 volt lighting bus.
  • Rear interconnect board
The rear interconnect board provides filtered connection to the rear connector (shielded connection).
  • Interface board
Twelve ARINC 429 inputs, protected against voltage transients are multiplexed to one single LSI input, which performs all encoding and decoding functions.
Software controls all selection and multiplex logic.
The low speed ARINC 429 output is buffered with two high current operational amplifiers which can drive twenty loads.
  • Printer driver board
The printer driver board contains all the high current drivers for both the print head and stepper motor, and provides interconnect between the power supply, print head, stepper motor, door opening and paper out switches and the printer controller board.
  • Printer controller board
The printer controller board is the heart of the printer containing all CPU (Intel 8031 single ship CMOS microprocessor with 9.8 MHz clock input), 5 volt monitor circuit, auto reset circuit, memory (64 kbytes of program memory, 16 kbytes of buffer memory), fault diagnosis circuitry, A/D converters.

7. Operation
A. Paper
The printer is loaded with a 90 feet paper roll (2.1 inches X 4.375 inches), which can be inserted via an access door incorporated in the front panel. A mechanical cutting device in the printer ensures a clean non-jamming paper cut. Upon receipt of the last message block, the printer advances a sufficient number of lines so that the last line of the printed message is not damaged by cutting the paper.
B. Paper Loading Procedure
Unlatch and open the printer front door, press paper spool sideways until the spool is free to rotate outward, slide empty paper off spool, slide new paper roll on to the spool so the paper unrolls. Rotate the spool back to closed position, feed end of paper over roller and through paper path indicated by paper decals until the paper extends slightly through the paper cutter on front of the printer door, close and latch the door, press the SLEW switch to feed approximately 3 inches of paper beyond the cutter, tear off paper.
C. Reports Print-out
Rules for report print-out initialization are specific for each system. (CFDIU, FMGS, EVMU, AIDS-DMU if fitted and ACARS if fitted).

8. Test
A. Functional Test
The functional test is not available on the A/C but only at the shop.
Momentarily grounding the functional test discrete input causes the printer to output at the maximum rate the first 40 characters of the ASCII set.
Grounding the alert reset discrete while momentarily grounding the functional test discrete causes a long maintenance test pattern to print-out.
B. Monitoring
The printer provides continuous monitoring of critical internal parameters.
These monitoring operations are performed under microprocessor control or respective circuitry :
  • Monitoring operation of no buffer overrun
  • Monitoring of no inhibit mode
  • Monitoring of door closed
  • Monitoring of no out of page
  • Monitoring of internal circuitry (memory, A/D converter, ARINC transmitter and receiver...)
  • Monitoring of power supply circuitry
  • Monitoring of operating temperature
The result of the fault diagnosis software function is indicated:
  • Via an hexadecimal LED digit indicator located on the printer controller board (for shop use only)
  • To the CFDIU. In case of malfunction leading to an incapability to achieve any print-out, the PRINTER transmits a message (label 356) on ground and in flight, as long as the defect is present.
