POTABLE WATER ICE PROTECTION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
The potable-water ice protection is installed to prevent ice formation in the potable water system.
Ice formation in the potable water lines can cause a blockage or damage to the water lines.
The potable water lines have an insulation, where the icing conditions can occur are heated by electrical tape heaters.
A control unit through the temperature sensors controls the operation of the electrical tape heaters.
The waste water from the galley and lavatory wash basins is discarded through the waste-water drain lines and drain masts to atmosphere.

3. System Description
The potable water line, installed in the forward and aft sections of the aircraft in zones where possibly icing conditions can occur, is electrically heated by heater assemblies. The potable water line is attached to water line supports, and tightened with clamps. The heater assemblies are attached to the potable water line with a bonding tape. The potable water line has an additional insulation installed to cover the heated lines.
The control units, located in the forward and aft cargo compartment, control and monitor the heater circuits. Each heater circuit is protected by a fuse, installed in its related control unit. The control unit controls and monitors the heater assembly. The temperature sensors are connected to the control unit which constantly measure the temperature on the potable water line.
If icing condition occurs, the control unit turns on the heater assembly.

For long distance flights of high altitude and in low temperature conditions, additional heater elements are installed on the fill/overflow drain valve and overflow pipes of the potable water tank.

5. Operation/Control and Indicating
The potable-water ice-protection system operates when the busbars 212XP-C 115VAC and 602PP 28VDC are energized and circuit breakers 1DW and 2DW are closed.
You cannot control the system manually.
The system operates automatically on the ground and/or in the flight mode.
Control unit 3DW controls the operation of the related sensors and heaters.
When the sensors detect icing conditions (this depends on stored temperature threshold in the control unit), the control unit will supply electrical power (115VAC) to the heater assemblies.
The control adjustments for the heaters are:
  • Heaters ON < 6.0 +1 -1 deg.C (42.80 +1.80 -1.80 deg.F)
  • Heaters OFF > 10.0 +1 -1 deg.C (50.00 +1.80 -1.80 deg. F).
The control unit(s) of the potable-water ice protection is(are) provided with an internal BITE test.
The BITE test function monitors the correct function of:
  • The control and monitor circuits
  • The connected heater circuits (tapes)
  • The connected temperature sensor
  • The internal solid states relays
  • The power supply of the system
  • The interface connector.
You start the BITE test when you push the TEST pushbutton, located on the top of control unit 3DW.
Two Light Emitting Diodes (LED) show the correct status of the system.
