TRIMMABLE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER (THS) - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
A trimmable horizontal stabilizer (THS) hinged on the rear part of the fuselage ensures the pitch trim control.
The two elevators are hinged on the THS.
An actuator with a fail-safe ball screwjack (Ref. 27-44) drives the THS, its structural attachments are also fail-safe.
Three electric motors ensure the normal control of the actuator. They are under the control of the two ELACs and the two SECs.
The actuator achieves the autotrim function of the manual or auto-flight modes and automatically places the THS at the center of the green band at touchdown.
The standby control is mechanical. The pilots can override the electrical control via the mechanical control system, through the application of a sufficient force to the control wheels.
An override mechanism in the THS actuator is used for that purpose.
The override mechanism reverts to the electrical control after release of the mechanical control.
