LUBRICATION - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
** ON A/C NOT FOR ALL
1. General
The lubrication instructions define:
The lubrication instructions define:
- The specification of the lubricant to be used
- The points to be lubricated
- The special precautions to be observed.
A. Equipment and Materials
Depending on the type of lubrication, you can use:
Depending on the type of lubrication, you can use:
- A grease gun
- An oil can
- A brush
- A clean lint-free cloth
- An aerosol spray.
B. Lubricant Grease Specifications
(1) The references of lubricants and greases are given in the list of materials required for aircraft servicing and maintenance (Ref. ATA 20-31).
(2) Airbus recommendations related to the mixing of greases
(a) For the greases that follow, their performance is satisfactory when there is a change from a clay grease to a lithium grease (a change from lithium grease to clay grease is permitted, but not recommended). You must not mix greases when you apply them on the aircraft. Different greases can touch, but you must not mix them. Contact Airbus for all other grease specifications.
List of Specifications:
- Mil-PRF-23827 Type I Lithium; type II Clay
- Mil-PRF-81322
- SAE AMS-M 3052/AIMS 09-06-002
- SAE AMS-M 3058/AIMS 09-06-003
You can use all the greases that obey these specifications for the standard aircraft greasing procedures. Airbus recommends that you use SAE 3052/AIMS 09-06-002.

(b) After you select a grease specification, try to always use the same specification. Do not constantly change specifications.
(c) If it is necessary to use greases that have different specifications (specially greases with clay and lithium thickeners):
- Refer to the approved list.
- Remove as much of the remaining grease as possible:
Purge the system if possible, or
Use a cloth to clean the system.
NOTE: Some discoloration is permitted. It is not necessary to decrease the maintenance interval.
NOTE: It is confirmed by tests that greases that are approved in relation to SAE AMS-M 3052/AIMS 09-06-002 are compatible. These greases have almost the same color.
(d) For a satisfactory purge in the mechanism, continue to put the new grease into the grease fitting while the old grease comes out. Stop when you see only the new grease come out.
C. General Requirements
(1) Use only clean lubricants and tools for lubrication operations.
(2) Before you start a lubrication operation, carefully clean the grease nipples lubricating-holes.
You must do the lubrication immediately.
Make sure that the grease nipples have balls and springs.
You must do the lubrication immediately.
Make sure that the grease nipples have balls and springs.
(3) Make sure that the old grease comes out of the pressure relief valves and on each side of the spherical bearings (unless there is an indication of the quantity of grease to be used).
(4) After lubrication, remove all unwanted grease. Wipe the grease nipple with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Make sure that the balls and springs are in position.

(5) Clean the wheel bearings before lubrication.
Lubricate and install the bearings immediately.
